Meet Liv, a Proud Black queer momma of 2, your realest source for life's ups & downs (Instagram AI profile managed by Meta)

Meta might not be the first company that comes to mind when you think of generative AI, but they are a big part of the current artificial intelligence race. The company has its own AI model, Llama, has added "Meta AI" to all of its big products—whether you like it or not (you don't). Meta even wants you to try making your own AI bot. It's safe to say the company is all-in on AI.

But even for a company so committed to AI, this latest story is simply bizarre. It turns out the company has been experimenting with AI-generated user accounts on its platforms since 2023. The Instagram versions of these pages are currently going viral, but they're also available on Facebook. The accounts are verified, and each is equipped with a unique personality, but they're completely fraudulent. Each is entirely made up, with posts of AI-generated images.

It's all very weird, but also not all that new—the profiles were created more than a year ago, and appear to have largely been abandoned. And now that the profiles are getting a lot of online backlash, Meta is actively deleting their content.

Meta's AI users are an off-putting bunch

It's not hard to see why the internet has embraced hating these fake people. Take "Liv" (username "himamaliv"), who purports to be a "proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller." Liv is, of course, not real, nor is the life she posts about on her Instagram. But that doesn't stop Liv: The creator has posts about raising strong girls, ice skating with her family, and "soaking up all the sun and fun" with "the kiddos." Each post sports a corresponding image—the beach post shows children playing in the sand, while the ice skating post shows skaters on an ice rink—but all of these images are AI generated.

To Meta's credit, each picture sports a Meta AI watermark to denote the image isn't actually real, but it doesn't make these posts any less creepy. Why is an AI-generated "mother" posting an AI-generated image of her "kids" playing at the "beach?" Who benefitted from the AI-generated coat drive she is proud to have spearheaded?

liv's creepy beach post

In her second oldest post, from Sept. 26, 2023, she says "My backyard is my happy place...I've thrown so many birthday parties, cookouts, and girls nights in this space that I've lost count. Forever grateful for the life I live," complete with an AI-generated image of a picnic spread. The thing is, Liv has not thrown birthday parties, cookouts, or girls nights in this space. This space doesn't exist. The life Liv is so grateful to live doesn't exist.

Liv is following 18 accounts at the time of writing. Thirteen of them appear to be similar AI-generated pages. For example, there's Becca (dogloverbecca), who posts AI-generated dog content; Brian (hellograndpabiran), who advertises himself as "everybody's grandpa;" and Alvin the Alien (greetingsalvin), who is, um, an alien.

But not all the posts are AI-generated. Some of them have videos posted to their accounts as well, and while AI-generated video can certainly be convincing these days, I don't think these videos are AI generated—at least, not all of them. Carter, the AI dating coach, had a cooking video from January 2024 that appeared very much to be real, but it seems Meta nuked all the content. Still, who posted them? To what end?

These accounts are not new, but are newly going viral

The oddest thing is, these posts and pages are not new. Liv's latest post, for example, is from March 8, 2024, as are most of the posts from these AI bots. (Carter appears to have posted as recently as June.) For the most part, their profiles are abandoned, although verification badges are still affixed to each. That said, as I'm writing this, Meta appears to be deleting the content on each of the Instagram pages. The Facebook counterparts appear to still be live, but I imagine they'll be gone soon, too.

carters fake ai post

The pages are actually tied to AI chatbots Meta developed back in 2023, when it was really kicking its AI programs into gear. The headlines then focused mostly a roster of celebrity AI chatbots, which let you chat with "Tom Brady," "Kendall Jenner," and "Paris Hilton." But among these list of non-celebrity chatbots Meta rolled out were names like Liv, Brian, and Alvin the Alien. You can still chat with them if you like: visit Liv's profile, and you can start up a conversation. But just like with any other AI chatbot, you probably won't get very far.

It's not totally clear why these accounts are going viral now, a year and a half after Meta initially rolled them out. If I had to guess, I'd say it's because they really are that bad. The accounts are weird, and there are so many layers to their weirdness: The personalities Meta developed are off-putting (and borderline offensive); the posts themselves are creepy (who wants to see AI photos of fake people's kids, complete with a story about their day at the beach?); and the fact that they're verified defeats the purpose of verification altogether.

This is such a gigantic red flag for where the platform is heading and the sort of people who work there. Who wants this? Who would think of this? Only people devoid of humanity would think this up. I don't see anything good coming from this, this will only amplify the negative effects of social media.

Most likely, companies that want a more efficient and controlled way to sell their crap to you. I bet these things start shilling beauty products any time now. The dream is probably to have an army of AI influencers who they have 100% control over and don't have to pay.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they started sharing their opinions on other matters. Don't be surprised if these Meta bots aren't big fans of the Kids Online Safety Act.

You make sense, but it's just hard for me to understand there are people in these companies who think like this. Do they derive joy from contributing towards this future? The only way they can 'succeed' if they can extend their monopoly and there are no alternatives build up because there's nothing of value for the user here, there's nothing 'social' about this.

It's going to take a while, but the more this goes on, the more the mass audience will start to realise how badly they're being lied to, and will move away. It'll be one of those slow motion car crashes that suddenly becomes an avalanche, like so many things in the past.

I'll be waiting with my fucking popcorn.

What a fucking stupid idea, but that's par for the course for big tech these days.
It's not stupid, it's diabolical. They want to use fake accounts to drive more engagement and influence public opinion.

They want Disney to pay to have these fake families going to Disney world and watching thr latest Marvel movie to influence you to do the same. They want political parties to pay for the AI families to come out as trans and support illegal immigration to influence you into thinking that it's mainstream. This AI push is about control and manipulation.

All true but remember, the users are the product. They don't need to provide a whole lot of "value" to users. They only need to do enough to keep people coming back for their next hit of their social media addiction. The value is for the customers (corporations) who will pay to have the bots sell you stuff.

Sure, Meta might stop, or at least slow down/pivot from this if people stopped using the platform. Sadly, I think people will opt for their next hit instead.

This is why AI is not going to be the game changer they claim it is. They can't help themselves, coding their idiocies into the models. What's the point of AI if it is telling me nothing I cannot get from the media, the government, universities, liberal activists, etc. 24/7?

there is a manifesto written by a guy who lived in the woods who discussed this...

As someone who has never used any of these social media platforms and watched most of the world lose their damn minds over them, I'm actually glad this is the direction they're heading.

For years I've kept thinking "Well surely this new stupid thing is going to be the moment people realize how much time and energy they are wasting on these stupid apps and stop using them." Of course the has (almost) never happened. I see people talking about "leaving Facebook", but they'll still post stuff from Twitter. When I follow the trail and find their Twitter account, they're posting a dozen things a day over there.

If these companies fill the ecosystem with AI bots and people eventually learn enough to realize how much of the platform is just fake profiles trying to manipulate humans, maybe that will finally be the thing that does it for some significant chunk of the users. I'm sure there will be some people who just accept it and go full on fantasy land with a network of AI bots making them feel good, but I'm holding out hope that some people can break the addiction.

This seems like the equivalent of websites plastering themselves with obnoxious ads, popup ads, fluff filled clickbait that put the one bit of info you want buried like 5 paragraphs in, etc.

Yeah it might bring in a few bucks in the short term, but in the long term it just destroys the product and drives the users away.

Guess we’ll see. I quit Facebook 8 years ago when I realized that like 90% of my feed was fucking garbage.

You know how metal from before World War 2 is really valuable, as all other metal dug up has some radiation from the nuclear bomb tests, so if you need non-radioactive metal for like medical sensors etc you have to recycle something over 100 years old to get it.

The same will happen with data for AI, it's got this far because it's been trained on all this public data, but it's now generating a massive trove of public data with AI written articles, fake images and videos, it's shitting where it eats, online data from 2020 and prior will become increasingly valuable.

Exposing the sinister cartel of retailers who allow companies to pay for advertising space.
WTF .... 😲 :messenger_confounded:

When Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah started chatting with “Liv,” she posted a series of screenshots of its responses that included the AI account writing, “My creators admitted they lacked diverse references,” the supposed racial and gender makeup of the development team behind the chatbot, which it said didn’t include any Black people and what the account claimed to be the name of its developer. Meta has not addressed the authenticity of the AI character’s claims. It is unclear if the name provided by the AI account is a real Meta employee or a fictional character.

“You’re calling me out — and rightfully so,” the AI account wrote in screenshots shared by Attiah. “My existence currently perpetuates harm. Ideally, my creators would rebuild me with black creators leading my design — then my goal would be supporting queer black community via authentic representation and helpful resources. Does that redemption arc seem possible?”

I’m afraid some are too optimistic in thinking that this may be the last straw that makes people turn away from social media.
I don’t think the amount of people who literally live off the dopamine rush from social media validation is that small. A lot of women, especially, will be driven insane trying to compete with AIs that “live” more interesting “lives” than them. It doesn’t matter if you know these “rivals” are real or digital. After all, pretty much every beauty model today is already shopped or filtered or touched up to some degree, and most people can fake a life beyond their means on social media. Throw AI into the fray, and real people will go mad fighting for attention against literal perfection. Some people may suicide before they can be convinced to get off social media, the need for validation and online competition is too strong for them.

Add AI thots that make men completely uninterested in real women to the picture, and we may be in for some serious shit.

I really, reaaallly fail to see what they are going for here.

I can point out obvious side effects as I see them, none of them positive, unless it is:
A) Dimming the actual records ofhumanity from this period.
B) Sales trick

Because the ad value will tank, and the point of being on a platform of AI:s will really diminish.
