Some guys just get locked in the mindset that women won't like them unless they are paying them money. A transaction of "I paid her this so she has to talk to me" makes more sense to them than the uncertainty of wondering if she actually likes them. I remember seeing this. Never understood how that's possible. Some super hot model that's way out of your league is one thing, ridiculous but it seems to happen to a bunch of people. But an actual international celebrity is beyond delusional. If I remember right the producers of Catfish even pointed out that Katy Perry had gotten married during their "relationship" but the guy still thought what they had was real.

That's the problem. Instead of directly asking a girl out and risk getting rejected they front load everything hoping she'll confess her love for him mitigating the risk of rejection for the nice guy. Then they get anrgy for being "Lead on" when they do eventually get rejected.
