Megaman Battle Network 5: Team Protoman/Colonel Impressions!

Alright! Another year another MMBN! But this one shouldn't disappoint the folks as badly as BN4 did. Though I have stated in the past that I loved 4 and it's endless navi battles but that’s besides that point.

Any who, this time around they've axed the tournament system and went back to the original style. There’s also a new addition: Liberation missions. They’re basically a mix of the usual battles with turn-based strategy on the field. You'll be taking turns with your own team of navis against the Darkloids. This all takes place on fixed maps full of special tiles called “Dark Panels” that contain viruses. The goal for each mission is to liberate the dark panels/holes and reach the boss at the end. To liberate a panel, you walk up to it and choose to “Liberate” and you’ll be tossed into the typical MMBN battle, but with a new set of rules. Depending on what position you’re in when you initiated the liberation, you may be at an advantage or disadvantage with how much movement you have. On top of that, when you liberate a panel you must destroy the viruses within three turns. The custom gauge will also automatically open as soon as it fills up, so you’ll have to work fast. If you cannot delete all the viruses in the allotted time, then you’ll have failed the liberation attempt. Failure only means you didn’t clear the panel and will have to try the next turn or with another navi. Something else that should be noted is that if you can finish the battle within the first turn, you’ll pull off 1-turn liberation which will clear all the dark panels around you. (Does not include mini bosses/dark holes) Besides the mentioned above, there’s no reward besides self-satisfaction for clearing a liberation battle, no chips or zenny! Though, if you can clear the entire mission itself within certain about of turns, you will end up with a nice chip. Now, as mentioned earlier, you get to command an entire team of navis this time around. Meaning you can do battle with someone else besides Megaman. This brings about new charge abilities and affinities for you to take advantage of during battle. They also have special field abilities such as the ability to clear multiple dark panels or have a perfect defense during the current phase. However, field abilities can executed if you have the order points for them. You start with 3 in the beginning and can be replenished by clearing the special dark panels.

That’s about wraps it up on the general idea about liberations. In any case, it’s the best MMBN so far, but maybe for folks that can’t stand the previous titles, it’s still the same outside of the liberations. Oh and if anyone’s on the fence about getting MMBN5, I’d recommend waiting for the DS version unless you really want to play the next MMBN game. I ended up with Team Protoman, what’d everyone else get?

I actually played through and kept Team Colonel. Team Protoman seemed to have the more recognizable allies. Also, the way soul unisons and dark chips are doled out, you get to use chaos unisons much sooner in the Protoman version... though I like the ones in Colonel more because they tend to affect multiple enemies. Course, you can always trade the data between the two games...

I agree with you wholeheartedly that MMBN5 is much better than 4. Of course, I also agree that it's just more of the same. Won't make any new converts, but should make devoted fans happy.

But, in all seriousness, would it kill Capcom to at least update the visuals to what the GBA is capable of TODAY? They're still using the sprites and such from MMBN2!

Ah, well these are only first hand impressions here, so no clue about the new dark chip and chaos unisons yet. (I'm only on the 2nd liberation mission! Been juggling this and Goemon) Also on the latter note, they did update the field sprites in 4, and continuing to use them currently. It's a rather big disappointment that the MMBN DS was just a spiced of port of 5. But I hope 6 or the next MMBN DS releasewill finally do something different with the visuals.
