Megaman X8 is....pretty good, actually!

OK, even though I thought the last 2 X games were pretty terrible (I played them anyway, but thankfully as rentals), I had a good feeling about X8. Then some reviews came in which said it wasn't half bad. Except Gamespot, but they have zero credibility with me after their "POP Warrior Within is best on Gamecube" crap. So looking at the decent reviews, I took the plunge.

And I like it! It is actually pretty cool. The intro stage forces you to use certain characters either alone or in combination, after which you can select 2 of them to take into a stage. I have beaten Optic Sunflower and Avalanche Yeti so far, and have gotten to Burn Rooster and halfway through Gravity Antonion's stage (gotta love the ridiculous names). :D

Optic Sunflower's stage is a series of minichallenges. You'll go into a room and have to fight a flying robot while jumping on moving platforms, or some such thing. Based on your performance, you will move up or down a difficulty level for the next mini challenge.

Avalanche Yeti's stage is a 3d bike stage that looks like it's a mid level PS1 title. It is supposedly the worst stage in the game, but I had fun. At the beginning, the helper character tells you to watch out for "CrevASSes". :lol The stage is auto scrolling and involves shooting, going over ramps to jump crevASSes, and fighting two minibosses.

Burn Rooster's stage starts as an auto scrolling segment where you have to jump downward from platform to platform. If you get crushed at the top, you lose energy, but fall off the bottom and die. Then there's a platforming part with spiky walls, and another, harder auto scroll.

Gravity Antonion's stage involves pressing buttons on the floors and walls to flip the stage 90 degrees. It gets tricky because of spikes and boxes which try to crush you when they are flipped.

There are also intermission stages which pop up after you clear a stage. These are mini levels of sorts which take you back into the stage with a modified objective.

The bosses so far have been very well done. They have relatively long life bars, but it doesn't feel like you have to sit there and whittle them down forever. The bosses also do different things based on how low their life is. For instance, against Avalanche Yeti, when he was near death I had to contend with 2 giant snowflakes bouncing around while he jumped around the screen trying to freeze me (at which point you have to call your other character to break him out) and burrowing into the snow to pop out and do a ryu uppercut, yeti-style. Optic Sunflower kept changing the layout of his room, and you had to use the blocks to avoid lazers by standing underneath or over them. Burn Rooster makes the floor move up in down in segments after the fight has been underway for awhile.

You get "money" in levels which can be spent in the shop. You have to buy continue chips, which serve as lives. On the normal difficulty, you get 2 chips and can buy 3 more for a total of 5. They are cheap, so when you do a stage and die, you will have earned more than enough to refill them.

The game is no cakewalk, but seems about average for Megaman X cheapness levels. It is definately not a game where you will finish every stage on the first try.

So if you have ever liked an X game, give this a rent at least. It is not going to change lives, but it is a pleasurable outing for megaman x, and reminds me why I used to like this series. And it has Bamboo Pandamonium. :lol

Hmm. One of the main problems I have with post-SNES Megaman X games, which EVERY SINGLE PSOne and PS2 X game has suffered from, is a dependence on "gimmick" levels instead of longer, detailed platforming and trap levels. Look how often the cheesy "rotating staircase" level was reused on PSOne. Look at X7 and X8, both with a low-quality (compared to say, vehicle stuff in the Jak series) driving stage.

I'm all for variety and one of my top 10 best action / shooting / platform games of all time is Gunstar Heroes, which virtually has a unique concept for every stage. But in the newjack MMX series, and even with X8 being a lot better than X7, it just feels like the quality of Megaman level design has sank to the floor, relative to the "original trilogy", as I think of the SNES titles.

Side gripe: I really dislike action games that shoe-horn in an ill-fitting "alternate gameplay" stage or something for "added design value". Only do it if you can spend the time to do it right - most games that try it, don't come close to doing it right.

I agree with your rotating staircase complaint, but I must say the variety of levels in X8 keeps it fresher for me than if they were just all left to right platforming and traps avoidance. It makes each stage distinctive. I found some of the SNES X stages were actually quite bland, particularly in X3. I also think X4 is quite good, but mildly overrated.
The original Megaman X is still vastly superior to every sequel in my opinion, but so far I would put X8 at about the same quality as X3 and X4 (though remember, I think X4 is overrated. If you love it, your mileage may vary).

I would rank them
X1>X2>X3=X8=X4>X5>X6>X7

So for me, the series got worse with each installment, so to consider X8 tied with the middle/good entries is an accomplishment, and the first quality upswing in a looooong time.

Ah, you beat me to it. Tho I've been busy with work and playing the game itself. A total blast! I'm up to Gateway stage now :D (all 8 + jakob beaten) The unlockables for this game are super sweet. Also to note, there's more cutscenes to unlock when you play on hard XD

Saying that X8 stands equal to X4 is a very bold statement!
X8 turned out pretty well. Possibly the most decent X game since X4 even. Also to note as I've said in the past, this is truly Sigma's last stand or at the very least he's not the final baddie anymore :3

Forgot to mention: Yeti's really isn't that bad. Man-O-Wars really takes the cake, but luckily it's extremely easy if you know what to do XD But damn what a mess.

edit again: We need some pics! From the forums of megaman network

I'm honestly scared of trying X8 after the shitfest X7 was, but I guess I'll give it a spin.

It's leap and bounds over X7. Any traditional X game is! All the characters were nicely rebalanced. Zero has his double jump back and has actual range on his saber. (You should see him with the Glaive) Axl is Bass-style rapid fire but with 8way-fire and has hover. X is the same but has extremely powerful single/charged shots. The lockon has been taken away as well. The soundtrack is also a pretty nice rock score, and the dubbing is pretty good minus Zero's battle voice. (Dubbed by Ocean Studios, same folks for Command Mission I believe)

Gameplay itself isn't too cheap, but some situations do demand really fast reflexes and pattern recogition. The movement and pace itself has also moved back to almost similar pace as the previous games minus X7. Bosses aren't really that pathetic anymore.T hey go through 2 stages of attack patterns at 80% and 40% health remaining. And as I've mentioned previously, some mad nice unlockables up for grabs. :D

I have but one question for those who have played it- in X7 my big gripe wasn't the 3d or the bosses or even really the level design, it was mostly the games pace.

Does X8 feel as fast moving as X1-6 did ? Especially when playing as zero , it was like walking in slo motion compared to the lightning speed GBA games.

As noted above. it's still not as fast as previously I think, but it's a really nice improvement over X7.

Agent dormer: Also on a side note, i think you might be happy to hear that .EXE5 is back to the traditional format, no more tournaments. Plus, the new liberate missions play like an SRPG. XD More details later.
