Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater |OT| "The world was split into two - HD and 3D."

Is Edge being serious with that statement?
Improved textures, more polys, shader effects, sunbeams shining through forest cover (ie godrays), dust motes floating in 3D...yes. Graphically the HD game is just the PS2 game, upconverted to 1080p and max framerate set to 60fps, and some effects had to be changed/removed. So in terms of graphics, yes they are being serious about the 3DS looking better.

I'm not sure if MGS3D employs the same AA technique. Can't imagine it does, what with that horrid framerate in or out of 3D.

Doesn't look like it from the demo.
And the framerate is around Peace Walker PSP levels during gameplay. It only gets horrible during cutscenes, apparently.
I found the controls and framerate acceptable, but then again, I also spent over 300 hours on MGSPW.

3DS version seems to have effects altered/removed too. Explosions seem to no longer have that glare filter effect, grass pieces no longer kick up when Snake runs through them, blood and mud don't stain clothing and there seems to be less dust kicked up as Snake moves.
Plus, the ropes on the bridge apparently can't be cut in the demo.

But yeah, some textures and models have been upgraded.

I noticed a few of the improvements in the demo but I see a few other things that seem like they're taken down a notch, hoping it's just for the demo though... well either way after playing it with the CPP I would agree with a lot of the statements about "definitive version". It has great controls and the touch menu is amazing, but I have to admit to being a bit of a tool for utility over presentation.

Fuck yeah, so hyped. My copy shipped last night and should be here in the morning. This'll be my first time playing MGS3D as well, or any Metal Gear game, for that matter. :D

Not surprising that the OT would get shit up. Shame too, the OP and the story summary is very well done, but of course, the only thing to talk about is the HD and Vita versions...

In retrospect, I should have changed the OT name a little bit. But I figured it would be the only thing people wanted to talk about anyway, so why hide it?

This is NOT true.

1) The textures actually have been downgraded in many instances and the use of mipmapping actually results in blurrier textures at a distance.

2) The geometry of Snake was improved, but the scenery took a hit.

3) There are no "god rays" present here in the form that we know them. They're just using flat polygons to represent light shafts.

The fact that it runs so much slower and at a very low resolution really hurts the overall package.

That being said, however, I actually think it's kind of decent overall. It plays surprisingly well even without the CPP due to extensive auto aim and some added control features. I have had no problems plowing through enemies without being caught on the 3DS. Having recently replayed the HD version, I was surprised at how easily I could move through the areas. While similar to Peace Walker, the controls do feel better overall.

There's definitely something appealing about the game on 3DS, I can't deny it.

Dat Ocelot bee scene in 3D should be glorious.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
EDGE - 8/10 "Packed with detail, both in terms of it’s environments and mechanics, this is a game that pays back investment in spades. MGS3 is a moden classic – the tighest, smartest and most emotional journey in the series – and even the HD update doesn’t look as good as this portable treatment.”

Hmmm...

Yeah... no. IGN(orant) are out of their goddamn minds, easily. I've seen HD, PCSX2 and they're both better image quality than these shots. I'm sure the game looks good on the 3DS's small screen, meanwhile. The only "improvement" is the character models faces. And that's debateable since the only hugest difference is them taking Peace Walker's "HD" face at the end of Peace Walker on PSP and slapping it into this port.

That said: Good for Nintendo kids to finally get the best outing of MGS even if it's not as good as the HD and/or Vita port. I'm interested in seeing what types of things the camera camo feature will use for effective camo since the ones in-game are more than enough already.

Those shots are actually bullshots, however, as the actual game only runs at 400x240 (the 3DS native resolution). It's much jaggier.

I find the OT to be very funny. Too bad people can't get over themselves and have to get out all that bad blood of their system first, before actualy discussion about the game can happen.

Are you shitting me?

Okay so my circle pad should arrive tomorrow and will give the demo another spin. I can deffo use the circle pad with the demo, correct?

Yeah, I did and it controls awesomely.

Actually with regard to controls I was incredibly happy to see the d-pad icon menu pop up when I grabbed a guard, no more accidentally slitting throats! And no more accidentally shooting because I aimed too hard.

Trying to remember why I ever liked pressure sensitive buttons.

Does the retail game do the same thing as the demo, where the 3D effect is disabled when you're shooting? (or so I heard from the demo thread)

Yes. It's an artistic/functional choice by the dev team so there was no need to change it. Honestly, who aims down the sight of a gun with both eyes open?

Mind you, that only applies to first person aiming. Over the shoulder aiming is still in 3D.

Something something it's a game. =P

I guess I'm of the opinion that if it's being marketed as a 3D game, then it should all be in 3D. That's just my thought though.

Here are my thoughts from the final game (I got it last week):

-Differences from the demo? Little-to-no difference. Same frame rate hiccups. General gameplay seemed pretty solid, but the demo and final build chugged in the same spots to the same degree. Disappointing, especially since the game DOES look better in quite a few spots in 3D (nice shaders used to make stuff pop more).

-Runs and looks much better than Peace Walker; slightly better than PS2 version in some spots, worse in others due to the lower resolution.

-Performance-wise, the 3DS version doesn't have the motion blur effect to mask the lower framerate in cut scenes, which the PS2 version used heavily. So, it looks choppier.

-ALL dialogue is voiced and present.

-Only two control schemes, one with CPP and one without it.

-This game is also wayyyyy better than Revelations at detecting the CPP and making sure it reactivates when you come out of sleep mode or load a game. Unlike Revelations, you don't have to enable it in the options every time you load your game. The game checks if it's there every time.

-I'm very susceptible to 3D, and the effect is impressive here.

-You can store 12 photo camos. The game accesses your 3DS photo gallery and uses the pictures from there.

-It is possible to get 100% camo index with a photo camo.

-Yoshi replaces Kerotan; and they moved them to different locations.

-Game tracks all your stats in real time, which is a huge difference from the original. I remember thinking I had 0 alerts back in the game, only to complete the game and find out the game recorded 1 at some point.

-Game also tracks your stats across all play troughs.

-Extreme difficulty = game ends when spotted.

Cannot wait for my copy to get here. I don't think I can stop loving Metal Gear. I may have a problem.

Still wonder what all is present or missing. For example, the video when you eat a snake for the first time, or cure videos like burning off leeches. Still there? Prerendered or fully 3D?

Any secrets removed? I'd hope not. The scene if you
wear the transmitter all the way to the waterfall
, standing out in the open during a particular fight to
challenge Ocelot to a duel
, etc.

MGS 3 is my favorite, and I'm probably going to have to wait this one out. I'm actually surprised that Edge said it looks better than the HD version, but its good to hear. The framerate is the only thing that really bothers me. I'll probably have to get this down the line sometime. Anyone try both CPP and no-CPP and can compare? Does this have any of the extras from Subsistence?

The duel is still there.

Videos shown during codec sequences are in 2D, if that's what you're asking. Same goes for the flashback in the beginning with Zero recruiting Snake for the Virtuous Mission. In short, anything that was prerendered before, still is.

I think I'm going to go ahead and pick this up. I'm enjoying the demo and I still have subsistence. Having a version on the go with the new features and 3D is worth it to me. Most of the other cutscenes seem passable. I have no idea why that Ocelot scene looks so much worse than the rest.

Well IIRC this version is based off the subsistence version..

After the demo, heck no. They upgraded some textures, but seem to have downgraded a ton of the other visuals. And some textures did definitely get worse. It feels very inconsistent now, as you have improved textures on character model, who will be standing next to cover whose texture was downgraded and it creates this ugly contrast in visuals. Unless things changed greatly from the demo, then yea no buy. I'll stick with my original PS2 copies and the HD pack.

I'm pretty sure Snake looks less pale in the demo as well. I don't remember the demo looking like this:

The lighting and Snake's model is different, not to mention the depth of field blur.

Well, I compared shots from the final game to the demo.

The difference in coloring is completely the result of the 3DS screen.

hmm no nintendo club points in the box :( Tales had them.

Nope. There's a leaflet masquerading as an instruction manual.

Seriously, it's the most offensive thing ever: It's two pages repeated in about five different languages.

any chance this includes metal gear 1 and 2?

When you boot up the game for the first time, the only option is "New Game."

Nothing else. Subsequent start-ups list: "New Game." "Load Game." and "Results" (stats screen)

Unless everything unlocks after you finish the game, I don't think they're in there.

This is why I said this version is more an update to the original Snake Eater, not Subsistence.
