Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of The Patriots 2.0 |OT| Kept you waiting, huh?

$60M wouldn't be close to the fifth most expensive game either, practically everything Rockstar makes is more than that this generation, WoW and TOR were both more, GT5 was more. Plenty of games.

I would love to know more of the behind the scenes stuff about with MGS4. Production budget, marketing budget, exactly what Sony contributed, etc. We know even less about the costs of Japanese development than we do to Western development.

Still 60m is a heck lot of money and this game shows, quality is dripping in all aspects. So many detail.

For instance the cutscene were you go in Drebins APC and receive the next gen nanomachines, it has so much detail, you dont see that often in videogames.

The One Who Knocks went BruceLeeRoy on this thread. Man it's been so many years since I've played this game. I've forgotten more about the game than I remember.

There are only two hidden trophies left on my list, and they're the stealth/bandana ones. Scan plug isn't a trophy for me.

The only way you could get that item (other then password), would be by playing Metal Gear Online and since that was discontinued they decided to remove the trophy.

Actually the game's version is now 2.0.

Also, just got the Flashback trophy! Now to never watch another cutscene, EVER AGAIN! :D

Did you use the guide in the original post for the Flashbacks might I ask (to see if the list in the guide is complete)? And did you get all of the *FLASHBACK* (the in game flashbacks) ones too or just from the cutscenes?

If you die, does your kills/crawl time/item usage reset, or does it carry on?

As long as you press continue, it carries on.

Holy fuck. I've just marathoned Metal Gear Solid 2 in a single session. Took me about 14 hours (day off work). Feeling pretty wired right now, not helped by the fact the story is a complete mindfuck.

I started a playthrough of the series about 3 months ago, played MGS3 and MGS and lost the desire to continue at MGS2.

This new patch has made me want to play 4, but I felt I needed to play MGS2 first. Anyway thats done... and I start my new playthrough of 4 tomorrow. Hell yes.

There is absolutely nothing like your first playthrough in MGS2.

Nothing.

Wish I could go back and do it all over again. :p

Well I'm pretty sure I played it when it first came out, but I couldn't remember any of the story at all cause I was in my early teens.

So yeah, this was pretty much my first play through actually understanding what the hell was going in (as much as you can anyway). It was a complete mindfuck and I loved every second of it.

Hmm.. yeah. there certainly is nothing like it.
credits started rolling and I just thought to myself "what the fuck did i just play."

the switch-a-roo (lol play as raiden now). and the fact it was a cliffhanger ending, with so much left unexplained, and the fact it was (at that time) meant to be the last MGS game. i really soured on the game. the tanker chapter and mindfuckery near the end were definetly the highlights.

really need to replay it.

Shit not realizing I was short a few Alerts I proceeded to the point where Raiden shows up in Act 5 - are there any areas left to get some Alert phases? Also, do stats cumulate or are they only relative to the safe file that you load?

The stats only count for that playthrough. I think you're too far though I'm afraid. Can you reload Act 5? If you could then you vould get an alert at the beginning, die, continue, get an alert and repeat.

So as long as I don't finis this current playthrough, my stats as they are will still be if I reload the beginning of Act 5? I can deal with that. I'm considering reloading anyway, but it would be great if I can keep my current stats.

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood you. Basically you start the game at Ground Zero. When you begin a playthrough your stats are all at zero. As you play through the game, your stats will change and when you save the game your stats are saved up until that point, irrespective of what you do after. So for example if I am in Act 2 and I have x kills. I make a save, and I kill 500 enemies, exit and enter the area and make a new save (not overwriting the old one). On the new save I'll have x+500 kills. If I reload the old one however, I'll have x again. This, to my knowledge, holds true for every stat.

So it doesn't matter if you finish the playthrough or not. If you have a save at the beginning of the Act, your stats will be whatever you had when you made that save. Unfortunately, as a result, you won't be able to keep any stats you got after that save but I would say it's worth it.

@BigNastyCurve, If you want an understanding of the plot I would highly advise you to play Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 at least before you play Metal Gear Solid 4. Many people, myself included, don't think Metal Gear Solid 4's plot is as good as the previous games (and is quite disappointing) and for the gameplay you'd be able to enjoy it without playing 2 and 3. However, you should play MGS2 and MGS3 regardless, not because you want to move past them onto Metal Gear Solid 4 but because they are remarkable games in their own right. The sheer amount of options, areas to explore, items to find and collect and hidden secrets within those two games is enough to last for hundreds of hours. If you can, the first game is very strong too and although the graphics have, of course, not really held up, the gameplay is still perfectly playable (although adjusting may take awhile) and it too is a highly enjoyable game, albeit with less hidden content (that I'm aware of anyway) than in the later games so I do suggest you play through the entire series if you've the time.

Only at the end of every act. So create seperate saves when attempting BB run.
This is true but it's worth keeping in mind that you can make a save halfway through an act and then exit to the main menu where you can view the mission briefings (I always choose Act 2's when checking these) to check your stats as they scroll across the screen in the orange bar (just don't save after you do this in case it adds to play time).

Ok thanks, that's what I thought. Not a big deal, I'll just start from the beginning of 5. I will just have to leave my game on for bunch of hours.

Another question, is there an area to check your stats at all in this game?
Only at the end of every act. So create seperate saves when attempting BB run.

Load up a Mission Briefing with the save file you're working on and there will be a ticker going across the middle of the screen between the different viewpoints (regular cutscene camera, Mk. II, the projector they use and something else, I think Sunny) and it has your playtime, kills, alerts and so on. It might also have stats related to the minutiae that contributes to the more obscure emblems like amount of time crawling or number of combat highs you've triggered, stuff like that.

I agree. It's like a game and a meta-game at the same time, and I don't think we've ever got anything like that again. Kojima tried hard with the crazy TV opening to MGS4 though - you have to respect when so much effort is spent on something so unusual.

After many years of not touching it, I'm replaying MGS2 on Vita now and it's amazing to me how it feels so much more involved and complex than even newest CoD games. An 11 years old game that I finished 3 times already, feels like it's a more recently made game than something that came out last year.

So do I need to play MGS2 & 3 to appreciate 4 or is 4 good enough to be a standalone game? I own 2 & 3 in the 360 HD collection.

At the very least, play the first one if you haven't. There will be some Acts where some things will fly over your head if you haven't played 2/3, but you'll be fine.

You NEED to play the 3 main games to fully enjoy MGS 4. You won't understand shit about the game otherwise.

I understood the game perfectly having played a few hours of mgs1 (which really told me nothing aside from the setting and a few details), and mgs3.

MGS3 is the true need in this case, imo. To understand the zero/big boss relationship.

Beat Act 1...and apparently I have a kill? Wtf. ALL I USED WERE TRANQS, STUN GRENADES AND CHOKES. But I did shoot this rat...oh god no.

My act 1 results... lol

Total Play Time: 17:35:54
Continues: 7
Alert Phases: 245
Kills: 716
Recovery Items Used: 63
Weapon Types Procured: 23
Flashbacks Watched: 39
Specialty Items Used: Not Used

Haha, just need those continues and play time for Chicken. Lots of other emblems to work on in Act 2, though...

I didn't find BB run that difficult except that bike chase, it's been so long I forgot how frustrating it was but I do recall that was the only part that actually gave me some trouble.

Ok it's ready for public consumption.

Doc 1.2
PDF 1.2

I spent the better part of today formatting and editing it to get it closer to what people were expecting. I added in Maps for the first 2 chapters unfortunately I couldn't find any for the other 3. It clocks in at about 55 pages.

Its made on A4 in word and I recommend you print it in booklet form rather than a stack of paper. I like it get it shrunk to 2 A5 pages, it think it's much nicer that way.

Feel free to re-host it or edit and upload a new copy.

Hope people enjoy it

You can buy it after you beat the game, but the easiest way is to just use the password system to unlock it.

I think my game keeps bugging out.

Chaff grenades didn't respawn in Act 4 even though the RPG7 ammo did.
Drebin didn't have Scanner for sale after beating the game.
There was a random dead guy in the building you first meet Rat Patrol in... the frog infestation building... just randomly on the floor with his RPG.

Speaking of RPG 7.

Act 1, Red Zone:
There is RPG that is unreachable. Standing from the militias base entrance, looking toward where the APC that rolls in, if you go past that APC just slightly and into an "alley" on the right.. where the two bodies are found, there is an RPG7 behind the gate. I can't find any possible way to get to it.

There's another passage deeper in their hideout that leads to the RPG.

Just finished the game, so fucking good. I think that's only the 3rd time I've finished it even thought it's right next to MGS3 for my favorite MGS. Feeling like playing 2 and 3 now.
