Metal Gear Solid Order

I'm a big time MGS fan and have beaten every game multiple multiple times. Given that MGS4 is right around the corner, I figured that I would do a refresher course to make sure I'm up on all the MGS lore by replaying all the games. I've been playing with the idea for the last couple days and I've been trying to figure out which order to go through the games. I beat them in the order they were released. I'm debating between doing this or doing it chronologically in terms of the MGS timeline. What do you guys think I should do? Either will be awesome, I just need to make this initial decision...

MGS3

MG1 (MSX)

MG2 (MSX)

MGS1

MGS2

now this is the right order (starting with number 3). and you can play the old mg games on the subsistence dvd if you like.

MGS3 -> MGS -> MGS2

Order of importance to MGS4's story, you'll want MGS2 freshest on the mind when going into MGS4 I think

Good, the implications of Portable Ops' ending are massive.
Still, Portable Ops did do a bunch of weird retcons that felt unnecessary, which is why that ending which ties into MGS2/4 makes me a little annoying that it had to be bundled with stuff about Gray Fox and Sokolov.

The changes to Gray Fox are 100% fine, because there's no way Kojima could have known the scope of the MGS storyline back when he made MG1/2.

Sokolov, though, I agree with, but who cares? He's a bit player in the grand scheme of things.

Maybe you folks can kindly elaborate on the portable ops storyline and retcons for us poor heathens without PSP's? please pretty please?

I could just not get into portable ops. it feels..blah. I dont like the stage select recruitment mission aspects. disappointing cause i love MGS3 and wanted to play as big boss more

basically mgs3 was all a set up (the set up was a set up, see volgin knew what he was doing the whole time and the boss was fooled, seriously what)

oh and sokolov is still alive, but he built the first metal gear

even though the whole point of granin and sokolov making the shagohod was so that the first metal gear being in outer heaven wouldn't be contradicted in mgs3

but whatever just throw that out he even calls it metal gear and everything

oh and gray fox is called null and big boss took him to an orphanage as a boy but he grew up and became a crazy white african ninja with a giant butcher knife (???) for the patriots and has no emotions because he's kept in a freezing coffin all day.

i don't even know anymore

It took me quite a while to get into the recruiting stuff... Personally this is my weak link as well... I didnt like the way that the story was told via comics... confused the fuck out of me

As someone who loved MGS2's storyline, let me say this "WHAT?!?!". Did they try to explain why Big Boss became evil? because MGS3's ending already did an awesome job of that.

Well, I can't go into a long-detailed plot summary, because I am lazy. But...

The game ends with Ocelot on the phone talking to a unidentified man/woman telling him that together he, the unidentified man, and Big Boss/Naked Snake (when they recruit him) will join together and become "The Patriots." In other words, Big Boss, Ocelot and this 3rd guy are the founders of the American Branch of the Philosophers, known as the Patriots and mentioned throughout MGS2.

As far as Retcons, I believe the ones that people take issue with are:
1. Frank Jaegar/Gray Fox's age is changed greatly. Also, the way in which he met Big Boss is also slightly altered. Nothing major, but it peeves elitists.
2. Sokolov is apparently killed in MGS3, but he is alive and well in Portable Ops. This is the bigger offense, IMO, but like I said he's a bit player, so it doesn't matter to me. The explanation they give is that Volgin just thought he was dead, or something. :lol

This. You got the Gray Fox thing completely wrong. I mean like completely, not even close.

In fact, you got quite a few things wrong. Did you really play the game?

I thought it was Granin who died, not Sokolov.

Granin dies in the oil barrel when Volgin is beating on it. Sokolov doesn't have an on-screen death, I believe. Volgin just mentions that he tortured Sokolov, until he died.

By the way, I'm watching Portable Ops walkthrough at Youtube. I MIGHT get a PSP in future (and Portable Ops would be the first game). Should i watch the walkthrough? I mean I'm pretty sure i ain't getting PSP anytime soon, and i want to be up-to-date with the story when MGS4 is out.

Why is everyone in this thread but Blaburn ignoring MG1 and 2? They're important for the plot, and they show how much of the gameplay was actually already done before MGS.

I would rather search for a series synopsis on the internet. The storylines barely made any sense when I played through them.

The only MG game with a convoluted story that requires careful attention to understand is MGS2. All the other ones, while detail-heavy, are very easy to grasp and understand.

I'd like to see you find a better way to rocket-jump!

(well, you can't find a more literal way, at least.)

Myself, I would play the games in order of release. Although they are in a different chronological order I think that playing 3 with the other games fresh in your mind will lead to you picking up and making up more details in 3 and PO.

Is the walkthrough going to contain all the story and comic book styled cinematics?

I should play through PO again but I am kind of stuck trying to kill 8 months ingame time to get the last two secret characters :(

You must not have a very big attention span. The stories are totally understandable.

MGS2 has a really complex plot, heaping helpings of symbolism and somewhat poor execution to make it that much harder. The same can't be said for the others.

I just beat MGS3 again to kick off my quest to play through the whole saga before MGS4.

Something i want to bring up is difficulty as a factor in the MGS experience and i highly recommend for anyone to play it as hard as they can. IT'S ORGASMIC.

Damn im going to have to sit down and beat Portable Ops. I got the game Christmas 06...and I just got sidetracked. Just didnt grab me like Metal Gear 1-2 and MGS1-3. I think it's the whole recruitment part that got me (just wanted to play as Snake the entire time). That and the fact that they used the Subsistence engine, but there's no real way to emulate the right analog on the PSP.

And perhaps the only good updated cinematic, the hallway scene.

People who have played Twin Snakes know which one I'm talking about.

Do you remember the cutscene before he uses the shape changing key late in the game? You know, the one where he does an amazing 8 meter side flip over the door frame instead of just walking past it.

That was brilliant!!

It is possible to finish Portable Ops without getting too into recruitment. You will need a handful of people to use as spies and having certain outfitted characters makes some missions much easier but it's do-able.

You won't be able to do 100% without a load of spies or a walkthrough and some spies though. The game has sidequests that you have to be told about.

controls and view are poor though, i wish they designed the game completely different and had top down view like killzone lib or maybe a further back more angled view.

On the topic of Twin Snakes (whose cinematics were directed by Ryuhei Kitamura), there are a staggering amount of connections between Kitamura and Kojima.

1) Twin Snakes. The most obvious.
2) Kojima was an extra in Azumi, directed by Kitamura.
3) Kyle Cooper, who has done the credits for Metal Gear in the past, also did the credits for Godzilla Final Wars, directed by Kitamura.
4) Yoji Shinkawa, Kojima Prod's resident concept artist, did all the mech concept design for Godzilla Final Wars.

There are more, but they don't come to mind at the moment.

As I said, only one scene was arguably improved. That definitely ain't it.

Argh! I need to see this, it sounds too bad to be true.
OP should just play them in release order, it should make the most sense that way.

Or perhaps the scene following the tank boss fight where Snake pulls the pin on a grenade and then just holds it for about 10 seconds or so before throwing it into the barrel of the tank, and having it blow up when the pin drops to the ground in slow motion.
