Metal Gear Solid V announced (PS360, open world)

http://www.gametrailers.com/side-mission/18361/metal-gear-solid-5-confirmed-will-feature-solid-snake

I completely forgot about this - sorry if it's been mentioned on this thread before.

Mixed with Hayter claiming he won't be Big Boss, and wasn't even asked... And the trailer song lyrics putting heavy emphasis on "everything's a lie"...

Something is up. Probably because
everything is a lie.

This game has the potential to be the most exciting. It seems to be set right around the time that the very first game starts. Which not only means a young snake could appear but also a young gray fox!

The timeline just doesn't match ip to having a young Solid Snake appear in any meaningful role in this game (certainly not as a boss, as some people have been hoping for ITT). A cameo in the ending or something, maybe.

I think Jaeger is a bit more likely, as he's a bit older than Snake and it's getting to be about time for him and Big Boss to establish more of a relationship.

Is Null not canon?

If the game goes from 83 to 95 so yes, Solid can make a cameo. What I really want to see is Outer Heaven.

Btw, is Ocelot on the horse helping snake right?

Nothing's confirmed, but nobody really takes Portable Ops too seriously. It's the only game in the series that Kojima didn't write and direct, and the only mention of the events in Peace Walker is something like "Finally we can leave that crap in San Hieronymo behind", which could be taken as a thinly-veiled diss from Kojima. Plus it was just kind of a crappy game. The Frank Jaeger stuff was a huge retcon to Gray Fox's backstory, and it was really poorly done. They tried to sell this story about him being nicknamed Frank Jaeger because he was a hunter who had a really frank look on his face.

GAWD that was dumb. I'm embarrassed just remembering it :P

Jack, you have to beLIEve me!

I've never really gotten the NANOMACHINES! meme. At least not the notion that NANOMACHINES! were overused in MGS4, compared to the earlier games in the series.

Nanomachines were always very important in the MGS games (except 3). For example, most of the first MGS game's story revolved around Foxdie. Which was a nanomachine.

MGS4 had a lot of cheese and silly stuff. But nanomachines was far from one of the worst of the problems of its plot.

Yeah, I agree it's a pretty lazy way of dismissing MGS4's story. Not to say that its story was perfect - far from it - just that "nanomachines!" doesn't really advance an argument and distracts from the legitimate criticism.

I'm confused. If BB is in a coma for 9 years shortly after Peace Walker then how does he rescue Frank Jeager in '77?

I doubt Kojima would forget that story plot point or retcon it - because he also brings them (his sister too)to the US in the 80's.

The more and more I think about it "V has come to", the Phantom, the hallucinations, using a different voice actor, Ishmael, etc. I think somehow he is messing with us and the player is not playing the "real" BB in Phantom Pain.

He did write that stuff twenty-six years ago. Honestly, I don't think the MSX games have been part of the canon since MGS1 came out. There's no mention of Big Boss being Snake's father in those games, for example - the clone storyline wasn't conceived until Metal Gear Solid. And MGS1 has so many gameplay elements taken straight out of those games, things as specific as fighting four invisible dudes in an elevator shaft and having to backtrack through half the game to pick up a new weapon, that Metal Gear Solid feels more like a remake of the first two games than a continuation of their story.

A lot of the information on things like the Metal Gear Wiki comes from sources like the English manual for the NES version of Metal Gear, or some Konami-written MGS handbook from 1999. I don't think Kojima himself is really interested in anything outside of MGS1, 2, 3, 4 and Peace Walker.

99% sure it is Ocelot. Grey hair and mustache. Red scarf from MGS3. Brown trench coat and you can see a revolver holstered to the front of him when he is riding the horse through the woods.

Man Kojima really pick a good song for the trailer. Now the song is stuck in my head :(

Yeah. I read the lyrics for the song the other day. It fits really well.

I am for the theory that Ishmal, the guy in the bandages isn't real. He is a sort of extension of Big Boss's psyche. Helping him get out of the hospital that is under attack. A couple things have be thinking this. Firstly, the first words he speaks, "Get up solider" and "I have been by your side for 9 years". Also both voices seem to be voiced by Kiefer Sutherland. Secondly there is that moment in the hallway to the elevator with little Psycho Mantis, where he sets the hallway on fire. You see that Ishmal catches on fire and Boss is fine. This could represent Mantis trying to attack that part of Big Boss's mind. Also, the shot with the car accident, out of the two men, why would the one armed man who can barely walk be behind the wheel instead of Ishmal? And lastly when Ocelot shows up Ishmal is now gone.

Of course this is just a theory. God...Can't wait till E3 to see more!

Doesn't make sense, otherwise why inject him with drugs that don't do anything?

Bandage Guy is Grey Fox. The game is about child soldiers. He is pretty much bound to be there.

I don't know why, it might be the MGS fanboy in me, or maybe the incredible trailer, but I just have a really good feeling about this game. I really think this is going to be the game that proves open world stealth can work. And the narrative obviously seems insane, but in an unhinged, brilliant way, and not a nanomachines way. Kojima has been working on this for a while and I can't see him not delivering. Maybe I'm setting myself up for disappointment, but I'm not hyped for anything more than this game.

The game wont go to 1995 I doubt Kojima will want to not have a young solid snake (or even liquid? that would be fucking cool) story after this, from teen green beret to foxhound and from foxhound to outer heaven. Snake would be like 9 in 83 so he could make a cameo

This is what I'm leaning towards as well. Didn't Frank have his ears and nose cut off in torture at some point when he was young? That'd explain the bandages on his head.

alright, after debating myself I decided... I want Hayter to be Snake again. Not because I love him but because they didn't change the VA of Snake in Japanese but change the English voice actor, it's like kojima have a thing against Hayter. We still have time to change it. Where is the petition ?

EDIT: Never mind it's HERE

Ishmael didn't inject him, Snake did it himself. Ishmael is a hallucination.

At the start of the trailer when Snake asks what happened to the woman, he says "we.. you let her go" or something. When Snake then asks who he is, he points towards Snake. They are both voiced by Kiefer at the start, the voices are identical.

Also, he never helps Snake during his slow and tiresome struggle to move, even though there's obviously need for haste. He seemingly turns Snake around after the explosion, but that turn could've been done by Snake himself as well.
He is also completely unphased at a levitating kid wearing a gas mask disappearing through the roof, and a fire demon extinguished by the sprinkler installation. Why? Because he doesn't see them. Because he isn't real.

Yeah Kojima, you reading this? I got you all figured out buddy! You reading this? Call me!

Looking forward to seeing how Kojima incorporates the below. Being a film buff and taking inspiration from Moby Dick, there is no way he wont have it in there.

"He piled upon the whale's white hump the sum of all the general rage and hate felt by his whole race from Adam down; and then, as if his chest had been a mortar, he burst his hot heart's shell upon it."

This is incredibly ignorant.

Wait so why did Ocelot replace the Liquid arm with a bionic arm?

I always thought he changed because it was actually possessing him.
Now I am really freaking confused.

He did it to hypnotize himself on a conscious level to get to his goal.

Honestly man, I'd recommend a Wiki or the downloadable MGS Database on PSN. At least that way you can read up on the full insane cannon at your own pace, assuming you've played the games.

Of course I've played all the games and you didn't answer my question.

Why did he change arms?

I wast just trying to give you a summarized answer, but oh well:

Ocelot needed to fool the Patriots AI into thinking that he was (or is controlled by) Liquid. So he switched arms to provide some "hypothetical excuse" which would allow Liquid's cells to "invade" his own and cause the mental takeover.

Meanwhile, the whole arm-thing turned out to be ruse by Ocelot; Liquid was never in control, or even present. But just to make things look all the more convincing, Ocelot used hypnotic therapy to truly make himself think he was Liquid, thus taking the charade even further, ultimately fooling pretty much everyone but himself.

Wasn't Frank Jaeger in Portable Ops?

Yes but we don't know how canon Kojima considers the game.

On the one hand they have ignored it multiple times (like not putting it at all on the 25th anniversary MGS timeline) but on the other they have referred to it as cannon but a side story.

Why did he change arms?

Liquid did possess Ocelot in MGS2. This is explained by Ocelot having the genes of his father, The Sorrow, who could communicate with the dead. Between MGS2 and 4, Ocelot ripped off Liquid's arm so it wouldn't interfere with his plan, which was to make everyone believe that Liquid had completely taken over his body so he could secretly destroy the Patriots.

Nice that we have someone who knows what he's talking about here. It's either Grey Fox or Big Boss' imagination.

Do we even know how old Gray Fox was in MGS1 ? I always thought he was the same age as Snake, them being both in Foxhound and all. This would mean that he was born in the early 70s and make him but a child in the early 80s. This would make it impossible for him to be Ishmael. Of course, this goes in contradiction of Portable Ops, but who the hell cares about this game anyway. Even Kojima doesn't.

I always remember that as fan speculation rather than the game state it as fact. although it sure is weird to have changed liquid arm into bionic arm in between mgs 2 and 4 if there's nothing wrong with liquid arm in the first place.

I mean, if you think about it, how the hell can an AI be fooled into believing a dead arm possessing somebody. lol

I always though Gray Fox is Solid Snake's senior. older by a couple years at least.

I'd be fine either way, but would be happier if it was Grey Fox. If it is and he doesn't mention San Heironymo, I guess PO isn't canon after all. Though I wish someone would just tweet Kojima the question directly.

2 more sequels after MGS V confirmed !

I guess one of those is the Boss game he keeps mentioning, seeing how he just walked away, lol.

Why would Gray Fox still be bandaged up after watching over Big Boss for 9 years? Unless he watched over him, fought some kind of battle, got injured and hospitalized in the same hospital as Big Boss, and was back on his feet before Big Boss so he could lead him out. And why would he tell Big Boss to call him Ishmael?

I really think Ishmael is imaginary and we are witnessing a Fight Club esque scenario. For all we know, Ishmael is planted in Big Boss mind by Mantis, who is then leading Big Boss to or away from danger.

Yeah, that seems likely from the game-play footage.

Better question is why is Big Boss still bandaged up after 9 years. But seemingly something's become lodged in his skull at some point during his coma.

The halluconation theory doesn't satisfyingly explain how he threw a woman out of a window by himself whilst unable to move. I could buy Mantis being involved seeing as she enters the room on fire.
If it's Mantis' work then it sort of fits, but it doesn't really explain why he'd need to be a hallucination, he could just as easily be someone psychically controlled by him, surely?
