Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

All other MGS games were fun and they didn't do this shit, MGS3 being the greatest game I've ever played. So.. Yeah - why would one exclude the other?

MGS3 had some over the top stuff in it as well though. Those hover platforms that guards patrolled about on being the main offender and at the end of the day, within the games universe we just have to assume things got more crazy in the 20 year gap between MGS3 and 5.

The supernatural stuff bothered the hell out of me in MGS3 at the time but I don't care anymore. I look back at it with fondness as it fit the cheesy feel of the game.

You know what? When I was watching the video and they showed off the Wormhole stuff (There seemed to even be a marker on the FOB map that said "Wormhole", suggesting that invaders access your FOB through trans-dimentional travel) I thought it was hilarious and so MGS. But at the same time I knew that if I came on here I'd see people complaining about it. Didn't disappoint.

Have we been playing the same series?

You don't think invaders arriving in your Mother Base via teleportation is a jarring level of goofiness? I do. Seems like jumping the shark levels of silliness for silliness sake to me.

Not really, no.
Yeah I totally agree. I mean, they haven't done crazy shit for the sake of fun and entertainment before or anything...

But then again I never played MGS for it's realistic atmosphere and story. I always assumed it was designed to be a fusion of Western Spy/Action movies and Japanese anime and manga. Thought they made that pretty clear from the get go with MGS1.

geez. so big boss' team invented the soliton radar, optic camo and metal gear rex like 2 decades before they were supposed to be, we also have holographic PDAs, weather control and wormhole teleportation technology. what did mei ling, otacon, madnar and co. actualy DO in those games? :P

but w/e, goty and all that.

So FOB stuff in ADDITION to MGO yields almost infinite game level status.

And we've had Snake chasing Ape Escape characters too. I imagine you can see the difference between those and utilizing 'wormholes' as part of a core mechanic in the game?

It's silly. Metal Gear Solid has always had a foot firmly planted in supernaturalism, but Psycho Mantis and Volgin just don't seem (at least to me) as goofy as having an enemy open a portal that transcends space-time to get into your base.

It's dumb. I don't mind it so much, but it is dumb in a way that the series rarely is.

That has nothing to do with technology, he's holding a perfectly fine RPG7

Oh yeah the hover thingies, but as I recall they were inspired by real ideas from the 60s at least.

Well obviously time and technology have moved forward, but how do you explain that technology moved back when entering the 90s and 21st century in the other Metal Gear games?

I mean nanomachines isn't even that ridiculous when you think about it, I'm pretty sure something similar will come in my lifetime. Other than that we have stealth, well that too is not so stupid and far fetched as one might think, there's been tonnes of military research on how to bend light to create invisibility.

I would argue almost all technology in previous mainline MGS games have come out of concepts and ideas that existed during the games conception and whatever time they took place, which means they were all plausible. I would argue much was about funding. Which is how I choose to look at it, the reason Snake have this amazing tech and the normal military didn't is because they really invested in these ideas with proper amount of attention and unlimited funding. Which is why it all seemed so plausible to me.

don't really dig the wormhole shit, kinda takes me out of the universe that has always had future tech, but grounded in a way that makes it believable :/

I know it's been asked, but can someone please confirm if this song is in the game? This is my ultimate 80's song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wirRZsAvJGQ

These are the confirmed songs so far (i'll spoiler tag them since I know some will want to be surprised)

Kim Wilde - Kids in America
Europe - The Final Countdown
A-ha - Take on Me
Asia - Only Time Will Tell
Richard Wagner - Flight of the Valkyries
Hall and Oates - Maneater
Spandau Ballet - True
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World
New Order - Elegia
Billy Idol - Rebel Yell
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

The depth of this game.. Wow. I only hope the online FOB is balanced well. I'd hate to be in a state of constant flux from this, constantly having to replenish personnel and resources. Oh and to think, getting invaded during an epic 15 minute cutscene..

It does really look like Kojima laughed off every kind of budget Konami tried to put on this and wanted to make the ultimate and final Metal Gear. I wouldn't have it any other way!

In a series where there's Psychics, men who control bees, astronauts who explode into flaming head missiles, ghosts, men who control lightning with lightning suits in the 50's, giant robots, people who run on water, where a person can deflect missiles with their hands, old people who are healed by nature, you draw the line at wormholes.

Ok ._.

So does PC not get any multiplayer till January? Or is that just the team/death match stuff?

I really hope I don't have to wait till then to full enjoy this....

Characters performing supernatural feats aren't like warping the fabric of reality, at least to me.

If a character turned Snake into a banana my reaction would be "What?". If someone froze and rewound time I would similarly think "What?". Teleportation via wormholes is sort of in that realm. It isn't humans doing something that humans don't usually do, but (for instance) electric eels or water striders might. Or spiritual weirdness. It's doing things that are physically impossible.

Teleportation is a pretty big McGuffin to have as just an aside.

I've always found the technological jump from MGS2 to 4 really jarring for some unexplainable reason. I get what it gripes you though, I can't really explain why MGS1 is so much less technologically advanced compared to Peace Walker and 5.

In regards to the wormhole speficially, i'm of the opinion that it is somehow related to Quiet's power (her teleportation looks fairly similar). I also look at all this stuff as things that Big Boss has invested his army into and I also like to believe that they keep it all top secret, hence why it doesn't really feature in the Solid Snake games. I mean, Mother Base was very secretive about Zeke when they thought they were going to have a nuclear inspection.

Far fetched, I know. It's the only way I can see MG1 and MG2 making sense though. Then again, I've always loved the game more so for it's themes as opposed to it's actual story. That's probably why MGS2 is still my favourite.

Yup, they're impossible just like Psycho Mantis floating, reading your mind, teleporting around when he blacks out your screen(!!!).

I mean....teleportation has always been a human concept. If we're stretching things to include spiritual weirdness, then we can stretch it a bit further to include teleportation.

I'm going to stop you and say that the Wormholes are not part of a core mechanic in the game. The FOB stuff is totally supplementary to the main game and you don't have to touch it at all. The Wormhole Fulton stuff is something you can choose to just not upgrade if it bothers you all that much.

Psycho Mantis reading your memory card and discussing your taste in games, Snake turning up at the end of MGS2 with an unlimited ammo bandana etc. is perfectly fine but a Wormhole mechanic in order to explain a multiplayer mode designed to add hours upon hours of entertainment to the game isn't? Okay. You can feel that way, but to say this is not in keeping with the spirit of the series is just disingenuous.

Oh, so it's okay to fight a giant dinosaur/dragon hybrid from Monster Hunter as long as you're using real world weapons to do so. I see.

I dunno man. Maybe warping the fabric of reality is their supernatural power how is that more unbelievable than any of the other shit that happens in MGS? Seriously.

This made me try to get into Peacewalker again, liking it a lot more so far.

So, what else should I replay before I play this? Tempted to do 1-3, this trailer just hyped me up so much.

Someone's obviously gonna make it happen and I can't wait when it does cuz I'm all for it.

It can even be synergistic with MGO. Can't effin wait.

Didn't they say that you only identify the aggressor if they get caught?

@_@ I'm going to destroy the alliance from the inside out. Long live Breezy.

You mean like the time a deceased Liquid possessed Ocelot through his arm? Which in a later game was explained to be Ocelot brainwashing himself?

Looks awesome, but I doubt I'll have the time for this game. There's just so much going on. Can you just play the missions without going too far down the rabbit hole with all this mother base stuff?

I can understand thinking the worm hole is overboard, but your reasoning doesn't really jive well. Everything Mantis does is still physically impossible. Vamp running on water and up the side of a building is still impossible. Fortune deflecting missiles even after her tech is disabled is impossible. I think it's really just that the wormhole falls outside of the boundaries the MGS universe has created. It has people with supernatural abilities, and technology that is a few decades ahead of its time. However, it doesn't have futurama-level space scifi with worm holes. It falls outside the game's universe feel.

I find it a bit ridiculous because I think it'll break the illusion a bit every time I have to use that thing indoors later in the game. I'm not really annoyed by it though.

Forward Operating Base. Once your Mother Base gets big enough you have the option to start creating Forward Operating bases. Once you do this though those are open to invasion from outside players.

Fresh Off the Boat. It's referring to new immigrants to Mother Base.

Forward Operating Base. Souls like invasion multiplayer mechanic for Mother Base.
Ahhhh, ok. Thanks! And I thought your actual base was supposed to be invaded. This system is getting very deep.
