Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

There are a few wrinkles in MGSV's upgrade system that make it harder to compare to Peace Walker.

The biggest one I can see is the GMP cost on extraction and the development of new Mother Base structures. Fulton extraction ranges from relatively cheap for individual soldiers to incredibly expensive (10,000 GMP) for something like an AA gun. Over the course of hundreds of extractions it should add up to a meaningful cost. Similar to PW, I expect elite soldiers may have to be placed into a brig, which takes time. Eventually, you'll reach capacity that gates you from leveling up weapons/equipment so you'll have to build new MB structures in each category (intel, support, etc) which costs GMP and time. The video has an example for 40,000 GMP and 35 minutes, and I imagine the cost of both will rise as you progress. In PW your base automatically expanded as you added more soldiers and your rank went up. This is on top of the standard wait time and GMP costs for weapons and equipment research.

Obviously microtransactions are a big difference as well, but I think GMP is going to be a bigger gate than time so they shouldn't be too tempting. I'm not sure if we have any point of reference for how much money you make per mission expect that raw diamonds are worth 10,000 GMP which is... pretty paltry.

I'm glad everything is expensive. Makes you want to explore and scavenge for stuff in the environment more. Remember MGS4 and how you were swimming in Drebin points by the end of Act 2?

I guess. But the design of MGS4 and PW are very different. You were flooded with Drebin points, but you also didn't really need them to progress. You could beat the game without ever opening the Drebin shop, similar to a no upgrade re4 run. As Love Deterrence said, the bosses in PW served as gates to your motherbase progression. There was really no way to beat those bosses without putting research into your carl gustav or supply marker or whatever, let alone getting an S on those missions.

Wait so this is supposed to be some world that just has off-shore military bases littering the ocean and dudes coming through worm holes to clown around in them?

Don't know what to say other than I'm ready to get my hands on this game.

I was hesitant to watch the video for fear of spoilers, but went ahead anyway and I'm glad I did. I'm way more interested in digging deeper into Mother Base stuff than I expected.

Edit: Am I remembering wrong, or should I be upgrading/managing my Mother Base in the GZ app for goodies that will show up in MGSV?

Looks pretty cool but I cant get excited about all the micromanagement shit.

You only micromanage if you want to, if you just want to Fulton soldiers and let Ocelot do the rest that's an option. No need to assign captured troops manually, just build your struts and research the gear you want

I just think this game is going to have some sort of massive twist at the end, and not the type we've seen in past games. I'm not really talking about the personality disorder/schizophrenia that seems quite obvious.

They've given us a ridiculous amount of gameplay footage.

E3 2014 - Afghanistan Start, 30 minutes
Gamescom 2014 alternative of E3 2014, 23 minutes
TGS 2014 - Africa , 24 minutes
E3 2015 - Afghanistan mission, 40 minutes
E3 2015 - 4 alternate routes of E3 2015 map, 31 minutes
Gamescom 2015 - another alternate route to the E3 map, 11 minutes
Gamescom 2015 - motherbase, 30 minutes

So overall we've seen just over 3 hours of gameplay from this game.

if everything is expansive because they want to push microtransaction, well that's not good

I'd think it's to encourage replaying missions and getting the best rank possible more than it is to push microtransactions. We still don't know how much GMP you'll get from your average mission and rank. Plus you can send soldiers out on missions to secure more GMP. I prefer to be optimistic and think that the GMP price is there to encourage players to dabble in those side things. I think the microtransactions are there to mitigate the timer more than alleviate GMP costs.

Haha yep, and a good chunk of it has been just from the third mission of the game.

Rocket arm!

This. Not to mention that I just don't want my game time to be dictated by timers. I want to play at my own pace, not by the game in order to try and get me to speed things up by buying conveniently placed microtransactions. And you can bet your ass that is why they are there.

Not a fan of these microtransactions, but I'm sure there will be other means to speed up the timers, just like Peace Walker. The Phantom Cigar could speed things up, and you have soldiers with Skills to develop certain things quicker.

Leaping from platform to platform looks really fluid now. And I really like the sights on the tranquilizer gun in first person. Seems like it will make it easier to pull off a chain of headshots.

That's unlikely. The microtransactions are there for a reason.

Anyway, the Phantom Cigar impacts in-game time. The development progress seems to be based on real-world time.

And yet I feel like I've seen nothing. This game will consume me.

When I find the soldier who's been spreading diamonds around Mother Base like he's the god damned Riddler I hope I get the opportunity to slit his throat.

Is there a thread or wiki or article that lists all the known content and features and improvements? I pre-ordered mainly based on the E3 footage and the fact that Ground Zero is so insanely well optimized, but I haven't been following MGSV at all

So should I be using the GZ mobile app to build MB to get a jump start on TTP or does it not work that way?

I'd also assume they are making a companion app for TTP as GZ got one as well, so possible remote managing of the MB and FOBs?

Looks pretty cool but I cant get excited about all the micromanagement shit.

I'm concerned about this too. I think it's great that the game has a lot of content, but I'm mainly in it for the story/gameplay. I know it's part of the gameplay, but I mean the gameplay centered around the forward momentum of the story.

We'll see how it turns out. Hopefully it's not detrimental to the pacing or story.

Yes there is a new app, just two screens so far but should be more news soon. GZ app won't help TPP because of those damn fiddles.

Who is doing the OT for the game ? It needs to be the most amazing OT ever. This is the last Metal Gear Solid and the end of an era. The game is Kojima's magnum opus. The OT needs to reflect this.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (I can't watch the video now) but didn't Sean say that you can just let Kaz handle mother base if you don't want to yourself? I took this as "if you don't like micromanagement then there's an option for the game to do it by itself"

I remember something from the video along the lines of Kaz being able to automatically assign personnel, equipment, etc at Mother Base after fultoning them.
