Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

There's a reason he ignore Portable Ops, it's because it makes no sense.

It has Metal Gear units that aren't bipedal tanks.

It implies that Big Boss got the idea of a state for soliders from Gene.

Null... just, Null.

There's too many things about that game that don't make sense and he's right to ignore it. It's a playable game, but if people thought the retcons in MGS4 were bad, Portable Ops basically shits on the entire series in terms of retcons.

It's there, left from Peace Walker.

No it's there. Just in tiny letters at the side.

Man I always dislike seeing PO hate. Put so much damn time into that game, and it was absolutely canon to me at the time until years later when it suddenly became all ambiguous and Kojima seemed to quietly disown it. If that's a 'bad' MGS game then the series is in a damn fine form.

Python was fucking awesome, the bosses were better than PW, it had good music, Elise's prophecy was great, you could first-person shoot, you could crawl, and you could play as Oceot/Eva/Zero/Paramedic/Sigint/Python/Null/Ac!d chicks and I loved it. So there.

PO is not part of the Metal Gear saga according to Kojima.

"The games in the series that I personally designed and produced. Metal Gear on the MSX, Metal Gear 2, MGS1,2,3,4 and Peace Walker and now Metal Gear Solid V are what constitute a single Metal Gear saga. With Metal Gear Solid V I'm finally closing the loop on that saga. In that sense this will be the final Metal Gear Solid. Even if the Metal Gear franchise continues, to me this is the last Metal Gear. "

Also PO has never been part of any official timeline. Before the whole drama with Kojima and Konami, Koji Pro had an official timeline on the Konami website which didnt include PO There is now also a new timeline on the Konami website, without PO as well. And on the promotional boxes of TPP the official timeline again excludes PO.

And in a more recent article by Japanese press who attented the MGSV bootcamp, they discussed the series' canon (focusing on the Big Boss story) and they excluded PO. The info on the canon was given by Koji Pro during the event.

Good, the game was never canon just like rising fans that think their game is canon as well lol

Oh, don't get me wrong. I think it's a great game and, probably, a lot better than Peace Walker because it doesn't have that stupid grinding aspect or attempted forced multiplayer that Peace Walker seemed to insist on. It's just not a canon game, but neither is Ac!d and I love that game, neither is Ghost Bable and it's excellent as well.

I'm not a fan of Rising, but it is unfortunately canon.

Any game not directed by kojima is not canon it's not even on the official timeline. The game is awesome don't get me wrong but it's not. You can enjoy acid, PO or Twin snakes but at the end of day those games are not canon.

With how incredibly fluid and inconsistent MGS canon is I don't know why anyone cares enough to argue about what is and isn't canon when Kojima will clearly change whatever he wants whenever he wants to suit whatever story he wants to tell now with no regard for consistency.

Rising has to be canon. How else can I upset Metal Gear diehards?

Peace Walker is even worse. Except that Peace Walker plot is stupid.

I wish that had been the case when I played it, but in fact there's plenty of them. Peace Walker is not a very good game, but Portable Ops is just plain rubbish.

I don't like P.O at all but to those that enjoy that's cool it's all I'm trying to say despite not being canon. PW I enjoyed it for what it is, a psp game with MH-esque elements that was designed to be played during short burst ( catered to the JP demographic where handhelds reign supreme ) and due to being on the psp the game had limitations.

If PO isn't canon, what's the status of the LET project? I think that's what shits me most about all the canon/notcanon stuff. Without PO Big Boss's story just kinda skips from MGS3 to "Oh by the way Zero is your enemy now, he runs this thing called Cypher, and there might be clones". It's terribly undercooked history.

All explained in MGS4.

Metal Gear Rising is canon. One of the producers from the team of Kojima went on the record and said so during an interview. It's just not part of the Solid series, so it exists as a spin off moreso than part of the main series.

People, for whatever reason, take that to mean it's not canon at all.

It is fucking nuts that Peace Walker doesn't mention it. No mention of The Patriots, of the ideological split, nothing from Ocelot or Eva or Sigint or Para Medic, and Zero only comes up at the veeeeery end as an "Oh, btw...". No mention of the coma Big Boss apparently fell into two years ago during which he was cloned. Instead they just retread the plot of MGS3 all over again for no reason, and shit it all up in the process.

It's a spin-off hence not canon. Like I said if Kojima didn't directed the game it's not part of the saga.

I understand your POV, but I disagree on it being nuts.

The whole perspective behind PW's overall story was how Big Boss lives a life where he tries to act like the "Patriots" part of his life never existed, and his own establishment of hi ideology and interpretation of Boss's will, in the form of MSF. In many ways, Peace Walker's story was a form of escapism for Big Boss. Chapter 1-4 highlights his escapism of his emotional conflict in regards to how he feels about The Boss's sacrifice contrasted to how he took her death. Chapter 5 highlights his escapism from a time where he used to stand with other fellow friends, which he rejected for his escapism.

The part with Zero at the end is more or less the post-PW story hook that establishes the reality that as Big Boss continues on his own ideological path, he cannot not cross paths with his friend with a different ideological path of absolute control, and his monologue at the end about fighting the times is pretty much an indirect way of admitting that he can't run away from eventually having to fight with Zero.

Anyone know any good comprehensive summaries of what went on between MGS3 and GZ? All the youtube stuff I've gone thru just summarizes events of the 2 games. No indepth lore as to what the hell is happening to zero, the patriots or the stuff you guys are talking about.

This is all well and good but the problem is Kojima spent all this time explaining the Big Boss/Zero relationship at the end of MGS4, but when he goes to do this whole prequel thing, he never devotes any time to it. It's all backstory for Peace Walker and MGSV even though the Patriots and cloning are defining buildup to MGS1.

Sure, it's probably because Portable Ops beat him to it, but the fact that Les Efants Terribles and the Patriots split happens offscreen is crazy. I would have loved to have seen Kojima's take on all of those events.

could you elaborate on your points?

When can those who have played the game discuss gameplay, I remember seeing something like a bunch of people had 48 hrs freedom to play as much as they wanted so when is the NDA on that up?

Or is the NDA under NDA and no one knows?

Not canon, deal with it.

That video didn't disprove canonicity. A spinoff can still be canon.

Hell, you even back my point:

Yup, but people fail to see that point you just made.

And then the person you were talking to points out that you just squandered your own post:

I'm contradicting you, however. MGR is a canon story in the MGS universe because of that loophole.(It may not be part of the saga, but that doesn't make it any less canon)

So you agree that while it's not part of Snake's story, it is part of Raiden's story and is considered canon to the series as a whole but just existing outside of the MGS series with Snake.

Which still means it's canon.
