Kojima considering the drivel that is Peace Walker's plot above Portable Ops can only be because he directed one and not the other.

Goofy piece of shit is what Peace Walker is. Pacifica Ocean. Hot Coldman. Rocket Peace.

Portable Ops explains a still disillusioned Big Boss creating FOXHOUND. If you are going to fill in the gap between Snake Eater and MG1 that's one place where you do it. It even has Big Boss doing all the shit he does to clear his own and Major Zero's name after they are both accused of treason. And guess what, Zero was being a treasonous son-of-a-bitch, as MGS4 reveals, and he ('the man with the same codename as Null') really was behind the events of Portable Ops. That is a story.

What does Peace Walker explain? It doesn't even really explain Master Miller. Fucking goof-troop piece of shit Peace Walker is.

could you elaborate on your points?
Spoilers for Portable Ops follow:

There's a lot of things in the game that, from a narrative stand point, makes very little sense to the canon. They don't make it a bad game, but they do make it completely at odds with the rest of the series.

Metal Gear in Portable Ops, RAXA and ICBMG, are not bi-pedal. One of the defining traits of the Metal Gear units through the series (a point that even Rising acknowledges) is that a Metal Gear is bi-pedal. Even Peace Walker isn't classed as a Metal Gear unit, despite having bipedal functionality because its primary state is 4 legs. RAXA and ICBMG are 4 legged and, thus, aren't Metal Gear. Development towards Metal Gear, certainly, but not Granin's final plan for a bipedal tank.

Secondly, Gene's take over was so he could use Metal Gear to establish a new nation, Army's Heaven, a paradise for soldiers. The entire concept of "Outer Heaven" was taken from Gene. Big Boss, really, has no real reason to not side with Gene, but ultimately doesn't, but he then takes the same idea and runs with it later.

Null is part of the "perfect soldier programme" meaning that none of his abilities are as a result of his natural ability, but enhancements through the programme.... despite part of the programme being that he must remain in a statis unit to reset his memories to stop his emotions taking over, even though he perfectly able, in later life, to rise the ranks of FOXHOUND despite, seemingly, no requirement for such a thing. It's just a strange way to attempt to tie a character into the back story.

1.
I didn't mind that. It showed progression towards a two-legged tank, and it referred to as a prototype, so I got the sense that they didn't quite have it stable on two legs. It isn't as egregious as any of the contraptions in Peace Walker, especially Chrysalis.

2.
Army's Heaven was inspiration, but Big Boss doesn't just take the idea. It's meant to linger with him as he founds FOXHOUND. It's inspiration for Big Boss on what not to do; he says that the place the soldiers need was outside of Gene's "heaven". Gene viewed individuals as pawns, and Big Boss had a fundamental disagreement with that philosophy.

3.
Him being part of the programme partially explains his ninja expertise as the Cyborg Ninja being uncovered training, skills that he had but were suppressed throughout prior to Metal Gear Solid. They need him in stasis so that he's the perfect assassin; guiltless and uncompromising. It makes sense for Big Boss to take him in and train him outside of being used as an experiment.

But did you rike it?

Fucks no.

Well, it's actually a decent game outside of the story.

Portable OP's was actually the first MGS game I played, and it had a very special place in my heart. I remember nothing about the story, but I remembered loving all the crazy characters you could recruit and the multiplayer was a fucking blast.

These are not problems and there is nothing inherently wrong with the plot of Portable Ops. It was the beginning of Big Boss as a leader figure rather than a lone soldier. Without it, Peace Walker just all of a sudden presents him as some mythical general without a single bit of progression.

In MGS3, Sigint notes that bipedal tanks are nonsense. Obviously, others had this opinion. So ICBMG and RAXA were created with an alternative idea, but the concept of a nuclear-armed tank able to deliver nukes from anywhere on the planet was kept, albeit with a varying delivery system. The fact that Peace Walker was still a quadruped proves this. The bipedal idea was a gradual process and it was Huey who made the final leap with ZEKE, given that he was faithful to Granin.

Big Boss had no reason to side with Gene. He wasn't as disillusioned in Portable Ops as he is in The Phantom Pain. Using nuclear weapons against entire nations was never on the cards for him. In fact, even after TPP I doubt he wanted to use them as anything but a deterrent. Gene had an extremely low opinion of humanity and a superiority complex, without any real care in the world for his own soldiers. Big Boss was the opposite.

Null was already a great soldier at a young age. That's why he was inducted into the program in the first place. He rose through FOXHOUND because he was a great soldier.

i wish i could get excited (AAA launches are always cool) but I just can't..stealth just isn't my thing. At least mad max launches the same day.

So you agree that while it's not part of Snake's story, it is part of Raiden's story and is considered canon to the series as a whole but just existing outside of the MGS series with Snake.

Which still means it's canon.

Thats exactly what I mean. Im on your side, MGR is canon in the metal gear universe

This is a game where you can take a bipedal robot with a minigun through the desert blowing up tanks and destroying everything in sight, It's not only a stealth game, it's whatever you want it to be.

BTW, I love most of the MGS lulz things like Nikita arm, etc, but at the gamescon demo, that line "D-Walker allows you to sneak on enemies, it's pretty silent"... Nope that shit makes so much noise.

Yeah, I think that's more for the player. No noise would mean no feedback. Hell, Spirit Camo in 3 is meant to make your footsteps silent but it's no different to any other camo.

It was an upgraded stealth-walker, it doesn't start silent. The Horse has a sneaking silent variant to unlock too.

This is honestly a problem I had with GZ as well. The giant "thud" sound of any CQC move made me hesitant to use them for days before I realized they were technically silent.

Sometimes they take auditory feedback a little too far, specifically with that silent D-Walker scene that sounds like a giant tank moving around.

Slightly offtopic only because i don't want to create an entire new thread. But has kojima or Konami mentioned anything whether or not if there is any reward for those who bought ground zero. I mean for phantom pain. If so what is it? Sorry for the off topic question.

on topic The game looks fantastic.

Guess what.

Unlike Peace Walker, Portable Ops did not receive an HD update, and thus was not included in any version of the Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection or the Metal Gear Solid: The Legacy Collection. Kojima later revealed on Twitter that the reason why Portable Ops was not be included in The Legacy Collection is due to the fact that he was not directly involved in the game's development.

In an interview on Twitch in March 2014, Kojima stated that while the core story of Portable Ops is canon, details that doesn't match with the other games in the series are not part of the main Metal Gear saga due to the fact that he didn't write the game's story.

I mean, the fact that the only real acknowledgement PO has had was Miller at the start of PW mentioning San Hieronymo in a context that implies he was there, when he wasn't, which contradicts PO, tells you exactly how much that game and it's story actually matters to the rest of the series, it's barely canon status exists to fill a gap until Kojima writes over it.

When you look at it's references from the main MGS games, something happened in San Hieronymo about the time PO took place, but beyond that nothing is actually known, so I look at it as the location and setting of PO is canon, and Big Boss seemingly acquired funds from there, but how and why doesn't matter.

So fully expect Null and so on to be things that don't exist/didn't happen the way PO did it.

Kind of the entire point of Ground Zeroes is the fact you can extract special guards and POWs and upload your GZ save to TPP.

I'm definitely not using shit like a "stealth" robot or horse. If it's going to break my own immersion, I'm not using it.

I hate it when superhuman boob-women with phasing/wormhole technology escaping from gigantic burning apparitions of a previous mortal enemy riding a pegasus made of flames whilst a gigantic flaming whale consumes everything I can see and hear breaks my fictional immersion.

Please excuse me, as I'm getting my arm stump replaced by a fully functional modular prosthetic robot arm. Did you know that technology was pioneered in the 80's? I simply can't wait to see what these babies can do now it's 2015!

I love Pokken!
PO is not part of the Metal Gear saga according to Kojima.

"The games in the series that I personally designed and produced. Metal Gear on the MSX, Metal Gear 2, MGS1,2,3,4 and Peace Walker and now Metal Gear Solid V are what constitute a single Metal Gear saga. With Metal Gear Solid V I'm finally closing the loop on that saga. In that sense this will be the final Metal Gear Solid. Even if the Metal Gear franchise continues, to me this is the last Metal Gear. "

Source

Also PO has never been part of any official timeline. Before the whole drama with Kojima and Konami, Koji Pro had an official timeline on the Konami website which didnt include PO There is now also a new timeline on the Konami website, without PO as well. And on the promotional boxes of TPP the official timeline again excludes PO.

MGSV-The-Phantom-Pain-Dummy-Pack-3.jpg

MGSV-The-Phantom-Pain-Dummy-Pack-4.jpg

And in a more recent article by Japanese press who attented the MGSV bootcamp, they discussed the series' canon (focusing on the Big Boss story) and they excluded PO. The info on the canon was given by Koji Pro during the event.

IT IS STILL CANON TO ME!

:(

I am OK with this, as long as I am able to get an S ranking with this approach, otherwise all these guns abs arsenal become un-usable if I am only rewarded with a no kill no alarms approach.

Yep. Not to mention this. (See item description)

Wow I love that. Glad to see op equipment will have a penalty. Hope S ranking missions gives you unique rewards like camos and stuff.

Considering you can still get S ranks in Ground Zeros even after killing every guard you come across, I think it will be possible.

PO is only canon in the sense that Kojima threw a throwaway line mentioning it in Peace Walker.

Hilarious considering Kaz had no part whatsoever in San Hieronymo Incident, and chronologically, it takes place 2 years before Kaz even met Big Boss, as detailed in the drama CD.

This sucks I buy 980ti from amazon and I don't get the promotion code..even tried messaging amazon and nvidia..:(

The promo is over already? It was announced barely three weeks ago. I realise it's not exactly a "new" promo and more an update of the Arkham Knight one, but, still, Nvidia could have updated the T&Cs with an end date instead of suddenly deciding that three weeks is long enough.

Should be |OT| A Kojima Productions Game.

Kojima Productions is truly erased, for what has been seen. At least Kojima still shows in "directed by" in chapters, it seems.
