Metal Gear Solid V: Gamescom Gameplay Demo

To be fair, there is a grindy element to it, of which it has been stated that you can replay missions to gain more GMP, etc.

So, like, if you're a crazy person who wants to unlock super weapon X before even the first chapter is over, you can probably replay the same mission over and over to get the cash for it.

Has Big Boss returning to the US army to command Foxhound ever been explained? Was that in a MGS4 info dump somewhere I am forgetting? Does that happen anywhere near 1984?

I can easily see MSF just re branding itself Outer Heaven because its a cool name but I got zero idea why BB returned to the US military.

One of the few hanging plot points that hasnt been fully explained by now.

No it hasn't been explained in any of the games so far.

inb4 someone decides to post "Yeah, the strategy guide says..."

Paz is not 13, she's in her 20's, she just says she's a teenager.

And Olga in MGS2 is like 20-30's at most

We'll find out. Maybe just clones I guess.

OT: "What about him?"
Could it simply be Ocelot he's talking about? Sitting around, uninjured and watching this as it goes down?

I assume it happens in the 90's at some point, and he's only really going back so that one day he can seriously dick them over. Ocelot is in FOXHOUND as well later so it could be both of them playing the 'long game'.

Wait, this is similar to Peace Walker? I haven't kept up with the thread or read any reviews, someone please reassure me here. I really hated MGS4 and Peace Walker - found them both to be huge departures from what I loved so much about the first three Solid games (albeit in different ways).

This game being less like MGS3 and more like PW is bad bad bad news to me. :{

i'd describe what i've seen(and played in ground zeroes) as an evolution of what kojima did/wanted to do with mgs3 mixed with peace walker's structure

Have you played Ground Zeroes? This game seems to be at least for the open space based on that

Well I have some bad bad bad news to share with you...

More of a MGS3-Peace Walker mix than anything else. Don't fret

I hated PW too, but it was mainly due to its tiny scale. Totally unsatisfying bite-sized missions taking place in tiny, fractured environmentlets. I was kinda sorta into the Mother Base building, kidnapping soldiers, developing weapons and equipment...

I'm going to ask in here, staying well away from the spoiler thread. If I pre-order this from Steam now, when do I get the free copy of Ground Zeroes? Is it immediately?

He's already formed FOXHOUND by the time PW happens but he's since left. That's all we know, I think.

Erm its nothing like mgs3

Yeah I'm not catching that either. I'm going to indulge and copy/paste a slightly silly analogy I came up with in a different thread.

Take any MGS from 1-4 and think of it as a nice meal at a fancy restaurant with many courses, plenty of surprises, all served to you by the chef. All you do is sit at the table, enjoy, pay and leave.

Phantom Pain is more like the chef gives you a shopping list, you have to go out and buy the ingredients then bring them back to the restaurant. While you're waiting for the first course to be cooked, you will be given a list of ingredients for the second course that you will go obtain. Come back to the restaurant, enjoy what's been cooked (or unlocked), get a list of ingredients for the next course and repeat until the meal's end.

You had the same meal, but it was far more tedious.

Have you played Ground Zeroes? This game seems to be at least for the open space based on that

LOVED Ground Zeroes which made me excited but I'm concerned the full game isn't gonna have the tight cinematic focus of MGS1-3 and instead feel more like PW :

I hope so. I saw something about there not being many bosses, is that true? Bosses have always been one of MGS' best strengths imo

you guys are crazy.Have you played GZ or not? Then that takes care of the gameplay. The peace walker stuff were limited by the PSP but that it not a problem now so every single thing that was in Peace Walker will be vastly improved in TPP.Best example is Mother Base which in PW was just a few menus but now it will be an actual base where you can freely go anywhere and interact with the people there etc etc

In terms of game structure, it's going to be most similar to PW but the missions will feel more like Ground Zeroes. Almost assuredly it won't be the short, linear experience the first three games were.

Well it's certainly far removed from Peace Walker then, other than the mother base stuff. Also seems very dissimilar to MGS4. Seems most similar to MGS3 than any other game in the series.

I think its mostly it's own thing, but if I had to choose, I'd say MGS3 and Peace Walker.

Why?

It seems to have a similar gameplay loop to Peace Walker. Core gameplay being a case of revisiting a number of areas in main and side missions *these areas being far larger in TPP). Non-lethal combat being rewarded by the fulton system. Mother Base in the background determining your progression.

I'd say it has more Metal Gear Solid elements than Peace Walker, but I wouldn't say it's any more similar to MGS3 than it is to MGS1, MGS2, or certainly MGS4.

I don't know why you guys are freaking out. We've literally had hours of footage and hands-on impressions to gauge what the game will be like. We totally knew they were using PW as the base.

anyone can help with this question please?

I went to pre order MGS on PSN (PS4) and at first the page would show up as blank.

Then i entered via search and the page loaded but said it was 9MB.....

I checked other games and all of them had their size in the GBs, even if it was a pre order.

So is this a glitch or something? Usually i see the full game size on a pre order page. If im not mistaken until dawn did not show up a size for game. I'd like to buy the game today once this is cleared up :)

No, I highly doubt that. BB's right-patch is the FOX logo, and not a FOXHOUND logo.

From a PW tape:

[MILLER]

Your old mentor, The Boss... She was known in the West as the "Mother of Special Forces," right?

[SNAKE]

Nothing but propaganda.

[MILLER]

Actually, it's not all that far from the truth. I heard the KGB just set up a counter-sabotage cell. Alpha Group, I think they call it. There's even a rumor that West Germany created a counter-terrorist unit within its border police after the debacle at the Munich Olympics. Back home in the States, they've got the illustrious Green Berets, the SEALs, and your personal creation, FOXHOUND... The seeds sown by The Boss are beginning to sprout. Same goes for MSF, right? In creating it, you were carrying on the will of The Boss.

There's nothing bad in saying it's fundamentally Peace Walker, but if every mission was in a large open sandbox with GZ's controls instead of a small bite-sized mission area with the limited PSP control scheme. And that Mother Base is an actual place, instead of just a management-sim menu.

From a PW tape:

Thanks. Consider me corrected.

Right. it seems like the potential of Peace Walker's game design more fully realized. Vast core gameplay improvements forming a game that seems mechanically (and story-wise) like a sequel to Peace Walker.

My prediction:

Best gameplay in the series (GZ pretty much confirmed this), paired with the second worst structure in the series (After MGS4)

I've never played Peace Walker, but I'm worried about the structure of this game seemingly being a console version of that. I could be wrong and love it, of course, but my gut is telling me I wish they did a linear type of game ala 1-3 .

Not long til we find out now either way.

Just my gut feeling I guess. I guess I relate it more to MGS3 than any other of the mainline games because of Big Boss and the tone the game takes when he's in it. But I agree with everything in regards to the similarities to Peace Walker.

Outside of the co-op and Monster Hunter inspiration, TPP is really fucking obviously an expansion on numerous Peace Walker components. The roots of building Mother Base, fultoning recruits, and developing equipment dig just as deeply in the game design of this as it did is predecessor.

That being said, it also looks to evolve other staples of the entire series further where PW felt like a big step backwards. I don't see it as inspired by MGS3 other the time period and protagonist. In play it looks just as much of an evolution of MGS4 too.

I mean, end of the day it's basically MGS restructured as an open world game, while also evolving many key components introduced in PW.

I get people's complaints about Peace Walker and how its mission structure made the overall pacing feel a lot less tight, but honestly, when it comes to delivering on the core story beats, Peace Walker was not in any shape or form "worse" than other MGS games.

The last parts of Chapter 4 with BB attacking the base while Heaven's Divide was playing, the face-off with Coldman, the NORAD call and PW launch sequences were hype-as-fuck, and if they were cutscenes, easily up there in terms of the other MGS games.

Whatever you may think of PW's story, it managed to be high-tension when it needed to, despite its design structure. Granted, the early parts were pretty slow.

It's been a while since I played Ground Zeroes. I forget, is the health system truly just a regenerating health thing, or does it have any twists to it?

Hmm. I guess I should expect this. I hope I like it. :/

Still buying for Kojima. I have faith it'll be a solid game, I just hope I can love it like I do MGS1-3.

I haven't watched any footage since we got the demo that showed the new box mechanics. PS4 box, sexy girl box etc. Wanted to go blind.

All regenerating, unless you take a sudden headshot or something then you stay at critical until you apply healing spray.

People will bitch about the lack of rations, but I prefer this to lying still for 10's of minutes to recover lost health.

You can get a critical injury (I'm not sure what causes it) that requires you to find cover to do a healing animation.

Never had an issue with low HP in previous games. Regenerating health seems like it is going to make boss encounters far less challenging. I wish they brought back MGS3's health system. Maybe make healing injuries restore your health more quickly.

Well to be fair it's super easy to be overwhelmed and killed if you're careless now, especially on hard difficulty.

Oddly enough this open world mission structure with equipment R&D and loadouts would be beautifully suited to MGS3's hunting, camo, and healing systems. Probably moreso than MGS3 itself.
