I got a copy from Circuit City on Tuesday and it lived up to my expectations. The critics were spot on, this is one fantastic documentary. I hated Lars prior to this, and I hate him even more now. And watching the film in its entirety makes you understand why "St. Anger" turned out to be Metallica's poorest effort imaginable. There's a part with Mustaine, and that was pretty touching.
It also shows you just how uninspired the guys were when recording the record and dealing with all of these problems.
So in a way, it helps you to also appreciate the record a little bit more and understand its direction.

Regardless, it's a great film.

I picked it up and watched it over the weekend. I thought it was a really well done documentary and definitely shows why St. Anger is so poor.

It also shows Lars laughing when James sings "My lifestyle determines my deathstyle." :lol

St. Anger aside, they are very talented and, well, they have proven it already. I can't wait for a new album from them, hopefully in the same vein as the old ones.

You know what bothered me? Was when Kirk was like 'I don't like drama, so I do what the band asks me to.' He didn't even fight for a solo to be done in any song. He was just rolling with it, and it sucked to see that he has so little input on the band. I mean, I know Metallica is James and Lars, but Kirk has been with the band since Mustaine was booted in '83; shit, you'd think he had some say. I guess the way he looks at it is 'hey, whatever pays the bills'.

Edit: Oh and WTF @ Lars making over $10M on his shitty ass paintings! Did you guys see his frigin house? Jeez...

Well, it's a pity, because they obviously just don't even listen to poor Kirk and he's well beyond the point of not wanting to stir things up enough because the conditions there are, well, not very stable. It sucks since he seems to be a very grounded individual. I do not fault him at all.

I was also surprised he made that much money on his paintings. There were a few that I liked, but never imagined they'd sell for nearly as much.

Mustaine's section annoyed me to hell since he seemed to completely dismiss his accomplishments and, well, the music he created. I have many Megadeth albums, and a couple of them are fantastic musical achievements (namely RIP and CTE.) To see him break down and dismiss this was a sad thing.

Go in the bonus disk for some additional scenes of the Ulrich-Mustaine meeting.

You can really see that the guy, despite everything he's done with Megadeth(which is quite a feat. all by itself) still wishes to be with metallica.

There was tons of powerfull shit taken out for whatever reason. CHeck out the "This monster lives" section on the bonus disk. Well worth the money I paid for this doc.

Oh and that song that was left out of St.Anger... Temptation. The lyrics are great but dear god does the song sound like CRAP.

Cheers Metallica, hope you take a look back at what you've done in your past, to come out stronger in the future.

Heh, just watched it again tonight and now I'm listening to live shit binge and purge, no band ever came close to touch this.

The movie was fucking hilarious. The scenes with the therapist... :lol :lol :lol

If I had any respect for them in the first place I would have lost it.

Does anyone have info on this?
It was talked about a ton before the original DVD was announced, then all chatter stopped (so sales wouldn't be impacted). Since then, no more info has come out. Either they dropped the idea altogether or they're still waiting for the right time to fully announce it. Lars, Berlinger and Sinofsky all mentioned some sort of 4+ disc mega set to come at some point while doing press for the theatrical release. Maybe the delay has to do with Metallica's current hiatus; the band guys are probably not available to work on the commentaries.

Here's info from the Digital Bits, by way of Intersandman:
The Digital Bits is reporting a December release date for the documentary 'Metallica: Some Kind of Monster.' The specific date hasn't been determined... just 'December.' This would probably be followed by a larger set sometime in 2005 (February?) including a larger cut of the flick - hopefully something like the 4 hours that's been rumored.

Obviously they missed that date, but if it's any consolation... I'm still holding out.

Been wanting to watch this since its theatrical release. For some reason, my wife, friends, family, etc. just don't want to watch it. I guess I'll just have to rent it and either force someone to watch it with me, or hide out for a few hours and watch it by myself.

It actually aired on VH1 uncut (well, they muted swear words) and commercial free a couple months back. They may do so again this summer.

Further proof I'm not crazy:

One of the film's directors, Joe Berlinger, said earlier this year that "Some Kind of Monster" would most likely come in two editions: the initial double-disc set featuring the movie and plenty of bonus material, plus a four-disc package that could include as much as four-and-a-half hours of edited footage that didn't make the film.

Whether or not this still exists, though, remains to be seen.

I honestly don't get the hating of St. Anger. I love the album. Are people pissed off that there are no freaking surf guitars or slow ballads? WTF?

The part with Lars's dad critiquing the music was weird. That guy was freaky looking. Although I have to admit the scenes with the therapist and how he suddenly felt like he was "part of the band" and "one of the guys" was too funny. Poor guy was living the high life hanging with Metallica. I shouldn't say poor guy -- he probably got paid more than I'll see in half a lifetime for that work he did.

I saw it in theaters, i loved the movie. (then again metallica is my favorite band)

It does show why st anger is the way it is, but why it had to be made.

i cant wait until their next album. they obviously want to be heavy again, but lets be heavy with good production, better lyrics and guitar solos next time guys! I know you still have it in you! :)

First of all, Kirk Motherfucking Hammet's solos, if that's what you're referring to, are not "surf guitars". I don't know what you're talking about with that.

Secondly, St. Anger sucks because it's a horribly-mixed, terribly-lyricized nu-metalesque piece of trash that has just about nothing in common with older classic Metallica. I'm not even a big Metallica fan, but their earlier albums were doing stuff with time changes, chord progressions, and guitar work that were musically incredible. St. Anger is just generic garbage.

Anyway, I caught this documentary uncut on VH1 and loved it. It was really fascinating to watch.

I hate Metallica, but really enjoyed this film.

I think anyone who likes Metallica will like the film.

But if you hate the movie, you'll enjoy it more.

Though if you used to love them, but not hate them passionately like myself, then its the film for you.

I don't know you're talking about either. I was referring to the surf guitar sound in Until It Sleeps. It was a reference to people who only like anything black album and after.
