Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Sega / Atlus have had one hell of a fucking banger year.

Persona 6 is gonna be fucking wild isn't it.

Also rip my social life. The trio of Silent Hill, Sparking Zero and now this...

Would be very funny in a year with 2 arguably GOAT candidates of their genre like Rebirth and Metaphor if they give the GOTY to a kid game like Astrobot.
Out of all those games, Astrobot does deserve it the most.

All the other games you mentioned here have a lower aggregate score than Astrobot anyway. It's already ranking above all others.

I REALLY like it.

This year was Atlus for me: Persona 4G, Persona 5 Royal (completed standard version years ago), Persona 3R and SMT5V. After that I didn't know what to play so SH2 was only thing left.

Game is more mature than other games, you control adult people that have adult problems. Fighting system is good, it's similar but has it's own twist to it (sabbath). Party is always the same 4 people so no problem with someone underleveled (but you can change their "personas", even mid fight).

Of course game had less budget than typical Persona game so world is quite simple and graphics are PS3 quality (at least it's 1800p, 60FPS locked on PS5). Music is amazing as always.

Biggest problem are barren axis locations, they are like mementos but not random - bit boring but ok overall.

You can rest at any point basically (returning to hideout) so annoying "days" system from persona is not here. Overall game is like a mix of SMT and Persona, I hope we will get SH3 someday.
Thanks for the reply and glad that you've enjoyed your time with it! I still have my PS5 copy of the game sealed (grabbed it last year during a clearance sale at a local retailer).

Most of what you’ve said sounds good to me, so I might give it a shot next year when I crave more of that Atlus JRPG formula.

Aggregate score doesn't guarantee more award wins though, see Red Dead 2.

"I've played through the demo twice and loved it. I think it will score in the 85-90 range with the dated graphics/performance and time management system holding it back. This is my first foray into Atlus rpgs in decades and I'm surprised with how much fun the combat and leveling/class system is. Great story, great characters, great design, and great music."

I underestimated it. I knew I was going to buy it but I didn't think we'd get something of this calibre so soon after Astro Bot.

Make an Amazon card and pay in 15x installments
i just got out credit card debit, not gonna go in again for a game XD

I know a guy that do account rentals and ill probably grab this game from him, usually goes for 50/75% off the full priced game.

Finished the demo on both the Steam Deck and the PS5, unsure of which version to buy...

Steam Deck performance has improved with recent patches, PS5 version was always stable enough. Decisions decisions!

I could always play the PS5 version via Chiaki4deck as well, can't decide haha.

Either way, this will be my GOTY for sure whatever system I end playing it on.

Story-wise, this is the most interesting Atlus RPG to date imho. But having played Persona 3, 4, a bit of 5, and SMT 5 before, and getting bored around 40 hours into each, I tried the demo and currently don't plan to play this game. Spending so many hours in repetitive turn based combat wears me out. Since all Atlus games are played similarly, I think I've grown tired of this formula. I wish this had been the first Atlus RPG I played; I'm sure I would have felt differently then.

i m working, but here in Brazil i cant afford full priced games every month ( already bought Astro Bot less then one month ago )

a game here at full price is 30% of the monthly minimum wage and that why i rent 90% of my games.
I’m mostly joking around, in Canada games aren’t cheap either, heck even price of simple food grocery gone stupid high.

This game has its own velvet room too but with an androgynous bondage dude wearing a beret. They basically lifted everything from Persona but made it ugly. This team is so creatively bankrupt.
Team creates their own distinct style of JRPG with various concepts across multiple games.

Same original team adapt and refresh their own ideas into a new IP that has recieved high critical acclaim right off the bat.

That's not what creative bankuptcy is at all. Quite the opposite.

Despite my concerns of it looking like a Vita game in 4K, with worse art direction than the initial concepts (Project Re Fantasy) initially had, it's probably a very good game, even if I don't really trust the hype (gamers and journos alike) over most of Atlus' games myself.

You literally can say the same for Astro Bot.

Definitely looks like they delivered on the follow through. Better reviews than P5 god damn. In a slow holiday season like this I can see it doing very well.

I'll probably give it a chance given it's Studio Zero's first new game and a new IP for Atlus which I support.
