Meteorite crash in Russia

Tweeting to Phil Plait to see if he has any guesses as to the size of the rock.

I DON'T believe that this really happened, and I still wouldn't believe it even if someone gave me a million dollars. I would still stand my ground.

I saw something like this when I was a kid, except at night and minus all the noise. It lit up the entire sky for a while and I was just completely amazed.

I remember seeing the space shuttle going over Texas one night and it was bright like that. Freaked me the fuck out. Cant remember if it seemed to be moving as fast.

The scary part is that it was probably quite small (Size of a car maybe. Going by past ones like this).

The "Close call" one tomorrow is supposed to be the size on an Olympic swimming pool. A scary thought.

I was camping up in the mountains once and had just finished smoking a bowl when a small meteorite came down. It was the middle of the night and the flash was so bright it was as if it were daytime for about 1/2 a second. Between that and scaring off some bears with firecrackers and fire-made spears, it was a great trip.

Anyway awesome videos, gotta love Russian car cams!

Phil says the photo of a building supposedly hit by it is fake and that the reported injuries most likely came from shattered glass from broken windows.

Looking at this video it looks like it passed through the atmosphere and back out again. But that may ba an optical illusion due to the angle.

Total stab in the dark: The gaps in the contrail might be from changes to the meteor's shape and mass as it broke apart.

DAMN that was a loud ass explosion. i fucking jumped in my chair!! i would of shit myself and started crying if i witness that alive

I'm shitting a brick.

Kind of scary how in 2013 shit like this isn't known about before it enters our atmosphere.

I thought there were people watching the skies at all times.

We do. This meteor was the kind that happens every year or so, it just happened to come down in the middle of the day over a relatively populated area. I guarantee we've had at least a few more impacts like this in the past few years that didn't make the news because they landed in the ocean. As for the size, it's my impression that little objects like this are neither easy nor productive to track, since they don't really pose a major threat.

And if the rumours are true, the big one was spotted and shot down so it was noticed on time.

Highly, highly unlikely. Anything else that enters the atmosphere at a high speed will be subject to aerodynamic heating - In the case of meteors, they usually break apart, sometimes gradually, sometimes in one bigger explosion.

I'm from Chelyabinsk, and I say kill em all!

Gotta love dash cams, some awesome footage, not even going to be mad if it turns out to be some viral marketing for the Russian CloveЯfield.

I DON'T WANNA CLOSE MY EYEEEEESSS

I DON'T WANNA FAAALLL ASLEEP CUZ I MISS YOU BABE

AND I DON'T WANNA MISS A THIIIIIIIINGGG

seriously though, I wonder if it's a chunk of the big one passing over.

I think the BIG boom is not the meteor exploding but it entering the atmosphere; it's the other, smaller booms, that are probably the sounds of it actually blowing itself to pieces.

Someone linked this in a stream I was watching and put the videos up and everything, came here afterwards - that's crazy man. Imagine waking up to that noise.

if Russia actually made directs hits, isn't that impressive? i doubt they did though, i dont even think the U.S. Navy could hit a meteor.

We have no reason to believe they did, though.

This is literally one of my worst fears. It's amazing how beautiful it is, though. Reminded me of Eureka Seven for some reason.

That arc.

"This is a light that destroys us and guides us all to death. However... It is so beautiful."
