Microsoft and the xbox 360 launch

Bad sales numbers in Japan, EA complaining about not enough hardware for christmas and other problems make me think the xbox 360 is off for a hard time until PS3 launch and maybe more after that (if Sony doesnt f*ck up their launch):

1. Missing HD/DVD drive. What were they thinking? Hyping the HDTV era and not including a player to show HDTV quality movies. Microsoft supports the HD/DVD format and the x360 could have helped to push the format. Blu-Ray gets a 100+ million blue ray users base 'for free' which make the format a sure winner. And x360 users will probably see some multi-disk games while PS3 owners will not.

2. Worldwide launch. What a really bad idea. The US gets not enough units, which usually isnt good for a launch. And japan has a 100k units left because the launch missed the only system seller title for japan - DOA4.

3. Retard Pack. I dont think it is THAT bad, sure helped MS to get more money out of accessories. But now developers cant rely on HD being available, which was hyped as a necessity for some of the games in the xbox era.

4. Releasing an unfinished PDZ. What could have been a killer app turned out to be mediocre 85% game not worthy of Rare's name. Halo pushed the xbox launch which resulted in about 2x as many units sold in the first day. PDZ didnt even make #1 in sales and will probably sell about 20% of what Halo did.

5. Overestimating the power of higher defined graphics. PGR3, the showcase for HDTV quality gaming just didnt sell very well although it plays on most kiosks. Comments I heard were mostly "It looks really nice, but I wont buy a new console for that". Same games with higher resolution (textures) is what most of the launch games have to offer, no new concepts, great physics or innovative gameplay elements.

6. Launching first. Sure the x360 wont turn out to be a dreamcast, but it shares the same problem. People are waiting for PS3, which probably even has better graphics. Last gen MS relied on the advanced tech (better sound, graphics, HD, live) to get their customers. This time they have to build their userbase on the reputation they got last gen (but much of that reputation still was build on the superior specs).

7. Bad news about faulty hardware again. Why cant the QA department check if units works correctly when changing the orientation of the console while playing. Sure you must be stupid to do that, but I am pretty sure PS3 and Rev wont scratch your disks when doing so. It is not really the problem damage done to the disks but damage done to japanese launch.

Most of that only to get a couple of millions units out before Sony enters the market. I am not sure if this was just a (bad) business decision or if it was pure panic not to launch at the same time as the PS3 does.

Last gen I did a topic "xbox, what went wrong, what went right", but honestly this time I cant find much that went right. Sure the 3rd party support Microsoft gathered through the xbox's lifetime is nice and the UK launch really went great, but both of that is build on xbox 1 success.

I know, many of you enjoy their hardware and the games available, and I know I cant (and dont want) to spoil it for you. I am sure the xbox will survive a whole console cycle and will get a good amount great games. But IMHO it will again fail to take much of Sonys market share and probably not even double xbox 1 HW sales as I had formerly expected. And if the xbox 360 doesnt bring MS closer to leadership I expect it to be financial failure again and probably their last console.

*cracks knuckles*

The positives from MS launching early:

1) The 360 "platform", meaning hardware and software together, is flat out awesome and completely next-gen. The Hardware is extremely powerful and great bang one's buck and the system interface + Live intergration is the best yet on any console.

2) The controller is the best ever. Wireless pretty much standard is damn nice as well.

3) Xbox Live Arcade is just another reason to own the console and seen as a "killer-app" by many gamers. Could be a huge selling factor down the road.

4) The integration of the console (with mp3 players, the PC, cameras, etc.) is really well done and I think many casuals, especially, will appreciate it's ease of use. Microsoft will/can easily add more integration features down the road through software updates.

5) Immense 3rd party and strong 1st/2nd party support for the console. Pretty much everyone is on board with games and that trend will continue through the life of the console because companies know that without their games on a potential 30%+ market-share console, they'll be missing out big time.

6) Demand has been unprecendented and it's the #1 holiday gift. Microsoft is sure to sell every unit they can make well into 2006 (in North America and Europe, anyway). In Japan, support is much more respectable than ever before. 360 will do much better than the original Xbox in Japan. Microsoft will have a 5-10 million head start on the PS3 by the time it's launched worldwide. Word of mouth is also overwhelmingly positive which will push demand even higher with each sale.

7) The library of quality games has started nicely and will increase steadily in 2006. PGR3, COD2, Condemned, etc. along with upcoming gems will give on-the-fence gamers plenty of reason to take the plunge, especially if the PS3 is revealed to be out in late '06.

8) Xbox 360 owners get to play their next-gen console a full year before the competition is scheduled to hit.

I read the whole thing with bated breath, marveling at how incredibly "on" the author was with each bullet in his scathing point-by-point expose. Finally, we know the real truth about xbox 360- what Microsoft didn't want us to know. And when I read that last climactic sentence, I exhaled a long needed sigh of relief. The perfect conclusion to a perfect article. Finally, Catharsis.

Bravo!

1.) OK thats your opinion, mine differs, but maybe you will think differently when games come out that really look next gen (the hardware to do them sure is there).

2.) And ehy only a "Wireless pretty much standard" ???

3.) OK

4.) Another MP3 player and something you can manage your photos/videos whatever on.

5.) The 3rd party support is strong, ease of development is probably one more positive. But 1st party games are quite disappointing (in sales at least).

6.) Sales are even worst than xbox sales and it is no suprise, xbox bombed in japan, why buy the successor. I dont believe all the Blue Dragons etc. will change that.

7.) Probably true, but lots of that can be played on PC and/or be on PS3 too. And sorry, but some of the stuff available on PS2 right now is pretty impressive too, just not as hghly defined. I would choose RE4 with its unbelievable production value over any xbox 360 game right now.

Does the 360 really scratch your disks if you play it in vertical mode? I heard that but I thought it was a bad rumor.

Sorry if I haven't been reading every thread about this in recent times, but is it a confirmed problem?

No

Not only do I play my 360 in vertical mode, but its on my minfridge which I open while playing. My disks are pristine.

I don't know the original poster's history, but I agree with many of his points and his sentiment overall.

Microsoft rushed, and if the 360 is capable of compelling next-gen games (I know it is), most of the games so far have not shown it.

To me, the greatest thing 360 brings to the table is a fantastic and well-thought-out online experience. Unfortunately, it seems to me that Microsoft was not able to achieve this level of quality throughout the rest of its pre-launch countdown, especially when it came to game development and marketing planning.

The people pooh-poohing this thread are obviously those who have bought into the 360 and are rooting for it in the next-gen console wars. More objective folks, however, will not be so quick to utterly dismiss these problems.

Oh yeah, that just HAS to be it...

"7. Bad news about faulty hardware again. Why cant the QA department check if units works correctly when changing the orientation of the console while playing."

From the Xbox 360 manual...

IMPORTANT

To avoid jamming the DVD drive and damaging discs or the Xbox 360 console:

Remove discs before moving the console or tilting it between the horizontal and vertical positions.

I stopped reading before I started- LOLLERSKATEZ!

So why is this still open if people are just going to come in here and make some incredibly witty "stopped reading blah blah" posts?

The poor guy just wants a shoulder to cry on.

A+ trolling. Good effort & detailed.

Eh, we have GAF nbots on PDZ all the time praising the console and its features. Its easily the most well thought out and feature rich console to date. ITs anything but rushed

The console itself appears to be well thought out, and the online experience is seamless. However, the software currently sucks.

I stopped reading your troll after that.

I actually feel the same way about PDZ. It just feels unpolished and incomplete in many areas. The mix of current gen looking graphics with definitely next gen graphics is a really jarring experience when you're running around in PDZ. The single player mode is awful and that made Joanna move like a freaking snail.

I actually have a ton of gripes about PDZ, but the main one is that it fell short of the original which is two generations old now. There really is no excuse for that, especially with all of the time Rare was given to make the game.
