Microsoft and ZeniMax deal approved by US Securities and Exchange Commission

Megaton, pun intended. 👍

By all means, don't port future games to PS5, I prefer being entertained and that would be hilarious seeing them go from reacting to the Bethesda deal to freaking out about needing to buy an Xbox.

On a serious note, despite their flaws Bethesda is definitely one of the best western third party publishers out there, change my mind.

Cool. Hopefully Microsoft can help Bethesda. Skyrim is 8 years old. The Fallouts last gen weren't great.

I'd give Starfield a shot (after a few years for Bethesda to fix patches given the state of their games at release) if it looks like it's a real improvement after Bethesda's latest work. A lot of other stuff I'm more interested in so take your time Bethesda. Just stop releasing sub par games.

I know it was said in another thread not to expect Bethesda to move to different engines... but i wonder how much better the newer games could be under UE5?

I thought Fallout 4 was rather well-received, some bugs aside? Now '76 is a whole different can of worms, I understand the distaste towards that particular Fallout.

Looking at some of the user MC reviews now; they're just boiling down to "It's not the Fallout I MYSELF grew up with!!" crying. Nothing that seems anything near substantive WRT criticisms.

I don't think Fallout 4 was awful or a true bust, but I don't think you'd find too many people on NeoGaf who'd say it was one of the best games of the generation or a true GOTY.

Microsoft is paying a lot of money for Bethesda and we're all anticipating what Starfield and ES6 are going to look like. I guess I'm saying we should be skeptical or cautiously optimistic to see how this next game turns out before everyone gets in 1000 post threads regarding potential exclusivity.

I'm a PS5 owner with a 2060 laptop that I don't plan on updating for a long while and hadn't planned on getting a next-gen Microsoft console. Still, I hope the game ends up being good. If I have to buy another console to play i, I won't be thrilled, but I'm willing to pay $$$ to play the best games, and more great games pushes bar higher for everyone and is a win win.

Fair enough. I think people need to sometimes look at the Fallout '76 stuff in particular as the cash-grab that it was due to Zenimax's investors trying to squeeze out some last-minute profits before selling things off. It doesn't excuse the mess, but explains it better.

Fallout 4 came out relatively early in the 8th gen, 2016 IIRC. There actually are no 3P games from that early part of the gen that usually get considered for GOTG, aside probably Witcher 3. I'd say F4 got a good fair number of GOTY nominations, but that's the same year Uncharted 4 came out and, well, I don't think anything was going to beat UC4 for GOTY.

EDIT: Never mind, F4 came out 2015. Yeah, very early in the gen, then. It still had to go up against Bloodborne tho. It won the BAFTA Best Game award in 2016, tho. Now, I don't know exactly how everyone on GAF feels about the game in hindsight, but we also should keep in mind we're a slice of the gaming community, not the entirety of it.

One step closer to Zenimax officially being "garbage anyway"

lol I don't know.

Maybe. I feel the moves they made this paste gen have not been their best. I agree with Fallout 4's reveal and launch as I like the idea of a game having a short marketing window that is an existing IP, I don't agree with pretty much the rest of how that gen turned out for them. Fallout 76, no Elder Scrolls which brings me to my next point, the already knew Elder Scrolls was going to take a while? Why remaster Skyrim and not Oblivion and Morrowind KNOWING it will be a while until the next Elder Scrolls? Remaster, add mods and port them all. Its fucking free real estate at this point and would be welcome remasters of some classics. I feel in many areas, they failed to leverage their IPs knowing they would not be putting out much this generation.

Those issues are why I'm ok with a MS purchase, someone needs to guide that team and a MS purchase at this point can't really hurt compared to just leaving them to their own choices.

Think about it. With this deal, if several Fallout or Elder Scrolls fail, MS will have Obsidian likely take over one of those IP, or Playground games if that Fable game turns out epic and they just turn into a RPG powerhouse. That make more sense for all of us, then for them to continue what they are doing. MS this gen is much different then years prior and I believe the beat down given to them by Sony will force them to allow teams to make new IP and to TRUST their teams to move on from series to newer concepts. Maybe they needed to see the records broken by PS4 to understand you can't just keep doing the same AAA IP for live and expect different results, new AAA IP are great too and bring in new consumers. That kind of thinking makes me more trusting of MS to do the right thing with Zenimax. For all we know this will probably turn them around for the better having all that support.

Im really impartial on this move. Last game I played from them was the first Wolfenstein. I never even played Skyrim and I hate Fallout.

But Im all in for the salty meltdowns lol.

Knowing MS's track record , I would not be surprised if Fallout 76 remastered is announced as the first exclusive .... :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Both companies got a lot to prove at this point

What will be even funnier is Ghostwire Tokyo and Deathloop being "incredible games, thanks Microsoft" until the gamepaas drop when "actually in retrospect, they weren't that good..."

Well I see why this move would be a "meh" thing if you didn't care for Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Those are the biggest IP they got from this deal.
