Microsoft cancels post-E3 media roundtable

Mortimer, can publishers say they have PS4 versions at all or just not show them? One is not too atypical but maybe taken to an extreme, the other is lulzy.

I don't know why people champion and cheer this obvious payola. It distorts the market and creates deadweight loss.

I would assume they can but I don't know for sure. I actually just talked to the same dude today and he has backed off a bit saying "I think some publishers just aren't comfortable with their builds." But he is certain that EA was supposed to show stuff on stage and be in their booth and now neither is happening. Other games, which he won't get specific about, were supposed to be in the booth and now aren't. According to him they are so, so, so thankful to the indies who are now jumping at the chance to get their games in the booth.

So it's hard to suss out who is pulling out because they don't like where their game is and who is moneyhats, if any. But it's definitely worth keeping an eye on. If there's a lot of MS multiplats and not Sony versions... I wouldn't assume that ps4 development is behind... i would assume that MS is the reason the ps4 version isn't there. But even that assumption might be wrong. That's why i posted that in here instead of making a new post about it because there's so much shit going on now that Im starting to think even my sources *think* they know more than they actually know. So many moving pieces...

What the what? There is no way I can believe MS execs decided to schedule something else on the day of their E3 presentation. That's like scheduling a round of golf on the day your child is born.

They will reschedule for just slightly before (or after) the console launch.

I am guessing they are stalling to see what Sony has to say at their conference. it is pretty obvious they will both have some kind of bad policies(compared to now), not sure what yet though.

Publishers wouldn't have that problem.

There's also the possibility that the PS4 isn't noticeably better looking than the Xbone version (we are talking about launch games, after all).

Considering they are not running on actual Xbox One hardware it is hard to say if what we see will even be the same experience as when you actually get the game on the console....

This is really starting to smell of the old anti-competitive tactics Microsoft used to use before they were bought to heel in the law courts.

No I agree, that is hard to believe. It's only the biggest PR event for your biggest product launch this year(?).

So they are basically avoiding making any clarification about specs,DRM,used games... I don't think they will talk about this during the conference.

I don't know, MS is really screwing this up, it's so bad that it makes it hard to believe it's happening.

You don't think they will be showing BF4 at the Sony conference?

I don't see how they could be uncomfortable with their PS4 builds. PS4 is just a souped up Xbone.

I missed this, but this is some shady stuff right here. I thought Microsoft had 15 Microsoft published exclusives for the first year. Why do they need to do this? The only explanation I have is that if running side by side the PS4 version of games will look and play far superior to the Xbox. This is just a band aid on a festering wound that will one day be exposed for what it is.

They want to downplay Sony's image for the PS4 as being a console for gamers. They want to say "LOOK AT US!!! WE HAVE GAMES!!!!!!!!" They are probably banking on the fact that they can turn peoples opinion on Xbone by showing a shiny ball and throwing it away from the DRM and possible privacy issues.

LOL.. a change in exec's schedule is such a bullshit answer.

oh, E3 has only been booked for oh, i don't know.. a year.. and all of a sudden change in schedule? How about the exec's meet 'external' folks later in the day.

one thing right after another.

I agree, it's a shockingly bad excuse, almost insulting to the press that they expect them to believe that. The execs can't make time to talk to the media at your most important E3 in many years? There's something that just popped up with a few days to go thats more important than that and has been scheduled for that particular day? lmao...come onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn son!

I mentioned the other day that I was hearing rumors of Microsoft throwing around a considerable amount of money to have publishers only show games on the Xbox One during E3. Most people dismissed my admittedly flakey news as 'that's what always happens.'

I've talked to more people since then though and this isn't the usual jostling for publishers on stage that happens at E3. Microsoft is throwing BIG money around to reverse course on idea that they aren't a games console. The rumors are that PS4 versions of multiplats, by those who do take the money, won't be shown AT ALL. Not on stage and not on the show floor.

I don't feel bad for Sony because business is business. I'm sure they will find a way to have a decent show... or they will have to recover afterwards. That's not really my concern.

Now, there's no need to take my word on this if you don't want to. But do keep an eye on E3 next week. With them buying up everything in sight and now potentially cutting an open roundtable out(to assumedly talk one on one with friendly press) and word that finding multiplat games on the ps4 on the show floor will be much harder than anticipated.... just keep an eye on it. Maybe my sources are wrong. But I feel confident enough in this info to share it.

I'm not saying to jump to conclusions. I'm just saying it may be something to keep an eye on.

That sounds like desperation.

it's Bullshit.

also, only 1 " exec" has answers? such horse shit. lol.. durrr wait till e3!!! they just pre dodged everything, as usual

So at what point does the gaming press put 2 and 2 together and start asking questions?

It means you accept whatever they present, no questions asked.
And? It doesn't mean that the content they present won't generate questions worthy of asking.

Not interfacing with the media is still a dick move no matter how you cut it.

E3 is the largest and most influential event in the industry. It's immensely important. Microsoft IEB executives don't just blow off E3...they reschedule other events so they can ATTEND E3. It's clearly a front for the real answer. Microsoft is obviously afraid of unfavorable press asking tough questions---

"How often, precisely, will the console need to connect to the internet in order to function? What exactly will happen if the console has not connected to the internet in that time frame?"

"Why did you design a console that millions of people around the world cannot play at all because they don't have reliable access to the internet?"

"Please go into length about your exact process regarding any DRM or fees attached to selling your retail copies of XBONE games."

^ I bet those are the kinds of questions Microsoft doesn't want to answer. Why? My only thought is that the answers are not going to be positive / pro-consumer.

Very confused as to what MS are doing.

The people who will learn about these cancelled meetings and talk about it are the exact people who talk loudest about these things, just as it was with the Xbox Reveal.
I think I get what they're doing, it's just gross. Control the message at all costs, no more speaking off the cuff, leave details "up in the air" for as long as possible.

Keep the mainstream audience they're targeting relatively in the dark so they just see it as the next CoD box and not something with negative connotations. The enthusiasts may freak but a good percentage will buy one at launch anyway. Dig into the war chest when possible to shape perception, ie. the cash for Xbox One E3 demo only rumor in this thread. Damage control in lieu of good news, fun for everyone. Maybe I'm being too cynical, but they haven't given us much else to go on between the rumors and announcements.

If you want my opinion... I agree with you completely. I'm just letting you guys know what i've heard. But make no mistake, this isn't a guy at the top with an outline of who is in the conference and when and where every third party game is. This is just a dude a passing on what he's seen + what he's heard. Things get just as rumor-y inside the industry as it does around here, as im sure you know.

Month after month, year after year Microsoft gets away with the shenanigans starting with the RROD lies, Kinect bs and now dodging so many things in relation to the Xbone but ppl keep giving them breaks or saying "wait till reveal, wait till E3, etc..." Really when is enough, enough? We all know they are just dodging accountability and having to answer for their discrepancies, false promises and unanswered issues.

Seriously i wouldnt touch any Microsoft console even if they gave it to me half off, simply too much negativity and bs associated with it!

EA isn't showing anything PS4 related? Huh.

To anyone wanting the press to start asking questions. This is the same press that believed Microsoft about the RROD and waited 1.5 years to ask questions about it. The same press that waited 2 weeks to ask Sony about questions regarding the PSN hack. The same press that ignored the FIFA Ultimate Team hacking even Keighley ignored it when he was the victim of being stolen (his account was recovered with a special attention from Stepto.

The people on the gaming press is not there to ask hard questions, they are just there to drink with devs and network with their future bosses.

MS can't seem to catch a break lately...even with this people are still gonna suspect something is up

Ok, so they knew months upon months ahead of time when E3 will be, when they present, probably even the time.

But all of a sudden, less than a week before E3, multiple executives can't make it?

That sound legitimate to you?

I'm curious, how many sources are there of MS paying publishers not to show PS4 versions of their games? I only know of one. In the short run, such tactics can be terrible for the PS4 launch.

That makes no sense where the "Executive's scheduling issues" are concerned. On something so important for the company and the biggest day of the year for that product, you don't have "Scheduling Issues".

Something going on internally.

I am the first one to make a "just like republicans during elections" joke?
