Microsoft cancels post-E3 media roundtable

Mortimer, can publishers say they have PS4 versions at all or just not show them? One is not too atypical but maybe taken to an extreme, the other is lulzy.

I don't know why people champion and cheer this obvious payola. It distorts the market and creates deadweight loss.

I think its anti competitive and sucks far more than buying an exclusive.

Was this discussed as well? I haven't read everything in this thread yet.

Yeah, on the previous pages.

What if they can't get the xbone out this year? I mean if the game rumors are true"6months behind" would it be wise to launch a console with a small launch lineup? That xbone interface looked really rough, it would be like the Wii u launch if they aren't ready.

Frankly, if this fuckery goes through I'd like to see Sony call them out publicly. Take the gloves off and have a proper console war, like in the days of Sega-Ninty.

You know i agree! It may seem silly but if this is all true (regarding the bought silence on some multiplats) Sony should spend 15 seconds of their conference to say "Oh just so you know, we didnt have to buy off silence regarding some multiplatform games - Fallout 4, mirrors edge 3 etc are all coming to PS4 too so dont you worry"(if they are of course).

Simple, direct and brings up this shady shit for everyone to know.

As much as I love seeing Microsoft fuck up their reveal and every single action after it, shit like this really pisses me off! I know stuff like this happens in business but in an ideal world it shouldn't, if a game is coming out on both systems then both should be shown, not take Microsofts millions and pretend otherwise for a certain amount of time to try and screw fans into thinking otherwise or not seeing what the competition is bringing.

As much as i hope people are smart enough to think "you know what, i dont like the shit your trying to sell and no matter how many carrots you dangle in my face i wont take it" instead of what i bet a lot of people are gonna be like on here during their E3 conference "OMG Killer Instinct 3, DAY 1 Motherfucker!!!1!" etc and forget everything else thats going on other than the games.

I'm not sure about that particular event--my point is, E3 is supposed to be a celebration of the industry's triumphs, an industry showcase, and a meeting hall for developers, retailers, and analysts.

It really isn't a place that's appropriate for negativity.

But with all the evidence of the past few weeks, so far this appears like it will be all but a triumph. You don't celebrate something that is in no way positive for video games and that is what it seems will be the case. It's not negativity, it would be constructive criticism by asking questions the people want asked. Negativity would be going like yeah ''I'm sure this game I've never played will suck and fail'' with only the name having been announced during a conference.

Has any publication ever did an investigative piece on Payola in the game industry?

I was at Gamestop with my wife and she was surprised that COD games were available for the PS3. She thought it was an xbox exclusive.

Its all about perception.
Yeah it certainly works. I had a couple of buddies surprised that Assassins Creed was on Xbox as well.

It sucks but they both do it, MS have already begun and you'll never see a CoD ps4 ad. Maybe you'll never see a Destiny xbone ad. It only has an effect on really stupid uniformed people anyway.

Very confused as to what MS are doing.

The people who will learn about these cancelled meetings and talk about it are the exact people who talk loudest about these things, just as it was with the Xbox Reveal.

Yea, this sort of thing is rubbish if it's happening. I'd like to see someone come out and say 'there are titles we can't speak of because of ...'

Yeah I dont like any of the companies doing it, but this move seems much wider (if true).
I hope it isn't and gamers who turn up at E3 can enjoy booths as they are meant to.

I mentioned the other day that I was hearing rumors of Microsoft throwing around a considerable amount of money to have publishers only show games on the Xbox One during E3. Most people dismissed my admittedly flakey news as 'that's what always happens.'

I've talked to more people since then though and this isn't the usual jostling for publishers on stage that happens at E3. Microsoft is throwing BIG money around to reverse course on idea that they aren't a games console. The rumors are that PS4 versions of multiplats, by those who do take the money, won't be shown AT ALL. Not on stage and not on the show floor.

I don't feel bad for Sony because business is business. I'm sure they will find a way to have a decent show... or they will have to recover afterwards. That's not really my concern.

Now, there's no need to take my word on this if you don't want to. But do keep an eye on E3 next week. With them buying up everything in sight and now potentially cutting an open roundtable out(to assumedly talk one on one with friendly press) and word that finding multiplat games on the ps4 on the show floor will be much harder than anticipated.... just keep an eye on it. Maybe my sources are wrong. But I feel confident enough in this info to share it.

I'm not saying to jump to conclusions. I'm just saying it may be something to keep an eye on.

I missed this, but this is some shady stuff right here. I thought Microsoft had 15 Microsoft published exclusives for the first year. Why do they need to do this? The only explanation I have is that if running side by side the PS4 version of games will look and play far superior to the Xbox. This is just a band aid on a festering wound that will one day be exposed for what it is.

It's probable that we may have to wait for XBONE's November launch to fully learn the extent of its anti-consumer DRM.

I assume it's not a subject Microsoft enjoys talking about.
So basically they are setting up an even bigger shitstorm by not clarifying this before release?

Is Microsoft trying to kill the Xbox brand on purpose? This is surreal holy shit.

LOL.. a change in exec's schedule is such a bullshit answer.

oh, E3 has only been booked for oh, i don't know.. a year.. and all of a sudden change in schedule? How about the exec's meet 'external' folks later in the day.

one thing right after another.

Surely Sony can still say what's coming to the system (even name dropping) without showing anything. That would enough damage control I would think.

Can't risk any actual questions being asked. Let's stick with puppets singing our praises during the conference and fanboys defending our bullshit on the interwebs.

"Oh hai! This is Phil Harrison's PA. Yeah, so I'm sorry, Phil can't do E3 this year, it turns out he's got a lunch booked with his mother, and he's not seen her for ages. Yeah, unavoidable conflict. Sorry. We'll have to reschedule all the main press work for our multi-billion dollar console, but I'm afraid the Outlook flag is pretty purple! Ah well. Laters!"

What Mortimer is talking about is just controlling the floor space. They aren't preventing publishers from announcing platforms, they can't, but they are controlling how the games are shown by limiting to on Xbox hardware. I think it is out of fear of a side by side. I hope one publisher or developer is ballsy enough to have both available to play so we can see the difference, but I bet Microsoft has some serious threats being dealt behind closed doors, and it involves a suit case of money.

Probably a smart move. Now the masses will blindly consider buying an Xbone at release.

If they had their Q&A and inevitably blew it, the clusterfuck would spread beyond NeoGAF and Twitter to the people who at this very moment still think the Xbone is the best thing ever.

We still have one-on-one appointments scheduled AFAIK.
Lets see how they will go:

Kotaku: Fans are curious as to what your used game policy is with the Xbox One? Are used games playable and will they require a fee?

Microsoft rep: We aren't commenting on that right now.

Kotaku: Rumor has it that there is a problem with SDRAM yeiled and some parts of the console will be underclocked?

Microsoft rep: We don't comment on rumor or speculation

Kotaku: Will consumers have to be online in order to play single player games offline?

Microsoft rep: We aren't commenting about that right now

Kotaku: Will there be some way to be able to play 360 games on the Xbox One, either through streaming or disc?

Microsoft: I can't comment on that right now

Kotaku: What can you comment on?

Microsoft rep: No comment.

Lmao really? So you really believe they will avoid all of the unanswered questions until launch?

It's really very anti industry to promote such heavy handed tactics if this turns out to be true. Why can't Microsoft focus on just show casing first party games and let the third party's sort themselves out.
