Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 | We Don't Need Roads

Because it is. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:

This game is definitely bad ass, but it's satellite imagery applied to some geometry. And yes, of course, there are the built out areas when they wanted to have more detailed cities. But get close up, the whole look breaks down. It's really easy to go find videos of this on YouTube, and there is a reason all of the screen grabs are taken when you're way up there. That's when things truly look the most realistic and most detailed. From a distance.

Ratchet and Clank is pure artistry at every level. Get close up to things and extreme detail you would never realize was even there, reveals itself.

As soon as something that looks as good as R&C (or better) comes out on Xbox, I'll gladly be the first to say it. This just isn't it.

It's funny though. I read Flight Sim threads and people are constantly bringing up Ratchet and Clank.

I go through Ratchet and Clank threads, and no one at all mentions Flight Sim.

Think about why that is.
You mean like textures applied to polygons?.

Yes there is a reason all the grabs are taken from in the air - its a Flight Sim.

Honestly the lengths people go to try and discredit this wonderful achievement :messenger_tears_of_joy:
I'm sure if the dev team was 2000 people, and they had 50 years to complete the game, they could hand craft every minute detail of planet Earth. Unfortunately that isnt feesable, and isnt needed for a flight sim.
Plus you precache an area, stick the garphics on ultra, and even ground level can look surprsingly good. Problem with using screen grabs and Youtube vids is they are often done by trolls, or people with shitty hardware.

Playing last night, just an incredible technical achievement. I'm just not sure why I'm playing though, it's probably just for the spectacular visuals as I'm not really into Flightsim's.

Well i'm not really into the sim part of the game. I'm just exploring the world, using the game kind of like Google Earth on steroids lol.
Explored lot of famous south America today, famous sites. It was really interesting.

I need to use slower planes and be careful as, flying from Gatwick to Torino last night, I decided to take a detour to Paris city to do sightseeing on the fastest Cessna plane you have available and found out that when you start this is a bit more difficult than one would think (too fast or dropping altitude and risking stalls easily ).

France at night, around Paris Charles de Gaulle but even the coast is impressively lit and by that I mean the lighting in general is super impressive but I also mean there is tons of artificial illumination in roads, towns, etc… too (I saw some stutters, some of them lasting for 10-15s, and a hard crash though). The visuals even at night (joys of a real-time clock haha) are splendid for sightseeing.

Since I still suck at using the in game maps, my wife and I had a great time trying to do said detour to Paris as she was checking the towns on Google Maps on her phone, checking the direction I was going to and which towns I was seeing first and telling me how to adapt the path to reach Paris. It felt great :D.

Cant wait for the helicopters to come to the game as that will make exploring even easier. The problem exploring with the planes, even the slowest plane, is when you get low to the ground the planes are still a bit too fast to really spend time looking at something, you have to circle and do a few flyby's lol. :messenger_beaming:

Or you can crash into someone’s house in the hills and the game bothering about turning off the main engines (I thought I had turned both engines off, but the game was yet to be pleased) 😂. I really really really like this game,
Need to stay away from the store as there is so so much stuff there already.

Are some of the airports in the store relaxing existing 3D ones or only there to add ones MS has not added in yet? Stuart360 Stuart360 do you know if MS has a process to highlight areas in big cities that need to be modelled/improved?

Torino (Turin) was Italy’s first capital and a quite important industrial city as well as one of the main cultural centre (most important Engineering school in the country too) and there are some monuments that can be improved and appear flat in the game at the moment like the Gran Madre (in itself a copy of the Pantheon in Rome):

Haha yup! And flying under bridges is fun! 😁
And landing is always exciting. I like the roller coaster going through all the different stages, coming in at the right angle, lowering slow and steady, make sure to not bounce up again, manage to stop after landing, taxing without crashing, etc.

I’ve only done free flight. Are there missions, like taking a package from point A to B? I think that’s needed to keep the interest for longer times. Some kind of Choplifter gameplay.

How are they adding all the cities in detail? It would make sense to me if people from the region itself could add things themselves.

I see what you mean.... its look crap at low altitudes (see first pic, the other pics are bonus pics (not related to this post)) :messenger_grinning_squinting:! I haven't noticed R&C being mentioned much at all. Obviously the games have been brought up in the best looking console game thread but other than that I have feeling that you are exaggerating a little bit. Have you played the game? You seem to be, by your post, easily influenced by YouTube videos. It easy to cherry pick to fit your argument (as it has been easy for me to find a really good low altitude shot). Not only is it one of the best looking games to grace console and PC, it is also replicating planet earth at 1:1 scale, everything in the FS is simulated. The weather, lighting, air, pressures even rainbows and I haven't even mentioned the physics with regards to the planes. Nothing is prebaked. This is a technical and graphical powerhouse and it is only going to get better as Asobo continue to update the game. This is really just the beginning.

Yeah some kind of Steam Workshop variant would be awesome, or at least some easy report system where you could post GPS coordinates and upload a photo to show where they’re terribly wrong.

Do you have stick or some flying peripheral? Controller is extremely sensitive, to fly more powerful aircraft, however prop planes are fine. No crashes so far with them, but with turboprops/jets, it's tough...

Saitek X52 Pro (its old, Logitech has since taken over them) and TrackIR 5. I'm playing on PC though, not sure if the Saitek works on Xbox.
I have an old Xbox 360 controller and I gave it a go playing on PC. You'll have to use very small inputs to get the turboprops to fly the way you want, and a bit of assistance (its a setting in the game) does not hurt. But I was able to take-off and land turboprops after about 30 minutes of training. Pretty relaxing playing with just a controller actually.

So is there a way to know where the fuck I actually am while flying? Sometimes I'll just fly around for hours and a little while in I have no idea where I am.

There's a tac map you can bring up. But it would be cool if you could bring up the cool globe from the lobby and see where you are during flight. Or if they made a companion app you could use on your phone or a plugin for Google maps or Earth.

This game is fucking stupid to say the least.

I have absolutely no interest in planes or flying but I'm addicted to this. Just flying around the Greek islands in the sun, from Melbourne to Sydney while night falls upon and from the clouds into a thunderstorm below in Chicago, I'm literally mindblow at how amazing this game looks and how fun just doing nothing but taking in the sights can be. Knowing there's literally thousands more places I can do this to just blows my mind even further.

This might have just turned my Series X into mainly a MS Flight Sim console.

yeah, and it's oddly relaxing to play as well.

The only 'stupid' thing about the game is keeping the 'Flight Simulator' name, as probably 80% of everyone who plays this (including me), will be doing exactly what you have been doing. Picking a plane and exploring the world.
The 'Sim' part will be for the enthusaists that will probably make up 10% of gamers that play this. :messenger_sunglasses:

Having tried the Sim part on a the series X controller and Elite Series 1 controller it's extremely frustrating, trying to precise "smooth adjustments" like that bitch in training keeps telling you is an exercise in frustration. The analog sticks have a bad deadzone that you can see when you go into "sensitivity" in the controller settings, and that fucks up trying to fly consistently straight because of how sensitive the game's inputs are. You can tinker with the deadzone but I tried a few things and it just lead to worse results.

I'm thinking the best part of this game is playing it on Noob mode if you're using a controller.

This will be my game/title/sim/whateveryouwannacallit of the generation I think.

I get that many gamers require more a focused goal and that this won’t be their thing, but for many who possess that gene for exploration…this is pretty much the greatest thing ever. And to do this on a console from the comfort of my couch on my big ass OLED? In this kind of fidelity? Absolute madness.
My wife is lukewarm about gaming (though she loved playing It Takes Two with me) but she often stops to watch me flying around, with her mouth agape at the visuals.

And lol at people posting blocky screenshots from ground level. Of course you are not going to have great fidelity at ground level. You’d be talking about streaming in petabytes, maybe even exabytes of data. Might be doable in a decade from now though.

Errrr want to tell us how!??

Hold down RB and then move the Right Stick up or down. Up to drop the nose of the plane, down to raise it. I’ve found you only need to tweak this only slightly.

This game is so deep. I’ve got it in dummy mode and I feel I have a long way to go to even pilot a Cessna 152 with any great expertise. It’s crazy to think what is involved to go “full sim” with some of the jets. I’m sure PC guys are like no big deal….but I’ve been console only gaming for a long time now and I’m having a hard time believing I’m actually experiencing this. On a freakin’ Xbox.

Reason for edit: I had those controls backwards. 😃

Tried out VR mode on my 2060S. It's listing ~1600x1600(per eye?), using 'Medium' terrain settings, 'Low' on the rest, 8xAF. Getting in the low 40s in the wilderness in a small prop plane, 20s in cities with a jetliner. 40s is borderline playable. Like when you stare at the ground it will move smooth-ish. 20-30s in VR is harsh and everything moving will drag and stutter, and make you motion sick. Ideally you want 90fps+ in VR, but 72fps+ will usually suffice. In this game I could see 60fps being acceptable.

So yeah, flying at Mt. Everest or Machu Picchu isn't that bad after the latest performance update, and makes me wish I had a 3070 or better.

I haven’t tried VR yet by probably going to go with the lowest settings and see if I can swing 90fps and move up from there. 3090 / 6700k

As I was getting home from work, I heard thunder. I went down, launched MSFS in the Cessna right above my house, and I was flying through clouds, thunder, occasional lightning. Put the controller down, took the headphones off and went outside, and the lightning was now in the real sky. I couldn't help myself. I looked up, wondering if I'd see my little Cessna above me.

I'm guessing you guys on PC must take things like this for granted. For me, there's been just a handful of times when games have completely blown me away.

Anyone on PC has their PC (i guess more like the GPU) buzzing when in the menu? While flying it's ok. Very strange. I just hope it's not like a refresh rate in the menu ala New world that is trying to fry my card.

I know very little about PCs but I'm sure I remember reading that there's no FPS limit in the menu and it can cause issues where it uses crazy amounts of processing power for no reason.

I might be talking rubbish though

Just a tip. You might not need to turn everything down and you might not need native 90fps, especially with a 3090. But to get to a good sweet spot you may need to play around with everything at hand; reprojection, render scale and details. As long as reprojection has enough wiggle room to not show severe signs of judder or ghosting, a lower native framerate is fine and reprojection will lift it to 90fps. Don't know which VR headset you have, but I have a G2 4K WMR VR headset running on 5950x/3080 and to get to a good (to me) 90fps experience I use OpenXR (you will probably have to find it somewhere else..) to set render scale to 70% (and set to ~100% inside MSFS2020), which should end up at something like 2688 x 1512 resolution in stereo render. With those setting I can get to Ultra-LIKE visuals (but not all actual Ultra settings of course..) and have an excellent crisp and smooth VR experience.

Legit the first game I´m a little bit jealous about from a PS5 perspective. This looks superb. I keep watching youtube videos of people exploring and I love it. This is the perfect pandemic game. Just boot it up and escape. So do I buy a Series s now or what? :D

Just go big, Series X with the 3 years Gamepass thing. MS still allows the loophole, geddit while you can. :messenger_smiling_with_eyes:
