Microsoft Game Studio and XB360 Rep Here Taking Questions

Would it be better to have one person on the first page summarize all the questions and have update the post with Arne's answers?

like I said, this guy can really only answer questions that fall into public domain, or perhaps 'clear' something up that is public but not that well understood. Things like 'When is Shadowrun coming out?' or 'How many games will B/C support on launch?' he just can't answer.

oxy, when is Shadowrun coming out? :D

So, zero questions answered so far...

EDIT: I guess the thread title does say "taking" questions...

Someone changed the title. It originally was just an announcement of his presence. That's what the whole point of this post was. To announce he was here in an official capacity so that when topics or responses come up, there isn't any question to the validity.

Hello Arne,

A couple of questions I have about X360 which I haven't seen asked in this thread yet are:

1. Why are Microsoft launching the X360 in the UK this year, when there isn't yet a significant HDTV installed base? Wouldn't it be better to delay it a few months (which is what normally happens with UK launches anyway) since Sky (the major UK satellite provider) will not be launching their HDTV service until next year and that will represent the start of the push towards HDTV adoption?

2. Why does the standard SCART adaptor included with the UK/European version of the X360 only support composite video? It seems a bit unfair to require European users to purchase an extra cable to get the kind of image quality that American users have by default with the component cable.

Yes I am agree: This Dec the 2nd I have to purchase a Scart cable to get better screen result instead of the composite cable, (so that will cost me another 30 E), beacuase I don't own a HDTV yet.

The most Europeanres prefer this option:
High component cable for HDTV>>drop it out the box.
Scart cable:Included
Since that the High component cable for HDTV was dropped it, The price will cost lesser>>say 379 or something...

Well, the European "HD ready" standard does require HDTVs to have component inputs, so the component cable will be useful for those people who do actually have an HDTV, but what I am saying is that since there are not a significant proportion of HDTV owners over here compared to the US, the standard SCART adaptor should be upgraded from composite video to RGB.

what does the 'core' pack come with? The premium pack should stick with component cables, as I have a HDTV - screw the rest of you!

I would have thought that following your logic, the US pack should have svideo, as there will be more people with that than component HD inputs?

I can't tell if this is sarcasm... did he actually answer anything?
i wasn't being sarcastic.

it was a genuine thanks to arne for coming to gaf. i'll edit the post.

arne,
re: european scart cable - could you suggest it be included with the 360 (for europe)? rgb is so much better and just about all tvs made in the last 15 years support it.
thanks.

But surely the component cables can be used for non-HDTV sets too? Component as a connection standard has been around way longer than HDTV. My point is that a great many Americans, even those with SDTVs, will have sets with component connections on, so they can make use of that connection straight away to get the best possible SDTV picture quality, but UK/European SDTV users are forced to buy a new cable to be able to get equivalent quality.

Ok, I just poured through 4 pages of this thread in the hopes that I would find some interesting new information on the 360 that i didn't know before from a "Rep". In the end, I see nothing new yet. Come on Arne! Feed us up something we can us!

From what element said, it only seems like he can comment on things that are already known - like possibly clearing up confusion. It appears he isn't really going to be able any of the hard hitting questions.

Either way, someone will get stuffed with cable choice no matter what MS had chosen. Personally I think they made the right choice, but im also buying a RGB and a VGA cable so that may just be me (I have a cable fetish I guess).

Here a tiny question thats pretty pointless and I daresay I could guess the answer, but here we goes anyways;

When ripping CDs to the 360s Hard drive, will we be given a choice of bitrates (or even formats) or will it still be 128wma so as to maintain compatability for the BC Xbox games?

Actually there will be more people with composite connections than s-video. Which is why the cable provided by MS for the premium pack includes both composite and component cables. The core pack only includes the composite cable.

This is regarding IPod/PSP connectivity.

Say If I were to connect my IPOD (Video) to my Xbox 360, would I be able to stream videos like I music?

From what I understand, Xbox 360 will play back music and photos from a PSP and most all other portable devices such as music players, digital cameras. However things are built to be expandable, so in the future there may be more digital media file formats may be added.

This could have been done better. He was bombarded with questions a little bit of Googling could have found.

Amen. i don't think this guy realizes teh GAF for the most parts is very anti-xbox to begin with.

Will it be possible to rip CDs using CD-Rs? I ripped my entire CD collection my Xbox and it took ages :lol It would have been MUCH more convenient to have been able to rip a few custom CDs and put them on the XBox, instead of having to do every CD.

CD-R is a format that is supported by the 360 and other formats include CD-RW, WMA CD and MP3 CD, so it seems what you want to do will work.

Is Killer Instinct 3 being developed?

Please answer this question, and please let the answer be yes or I will verbally assault a kiosk...

At the very least I'd like to Thank Arne for being here, hopefully he's helped show some on GAF how much they suffer from groupthink. I'd like to know how many MMORPG's there are in development for the 360? I don't need to know which, I just want to know how many. I can't wait for the Marvel Universe one...

Excellent! Thanks, that's one of the things I really wanted to know. It means I won't have to rip 60+ CDs and then go through editing and deleting the ones I don't want

I'm also curious about how they'll be stored and archived ie if I rip from CD then will they have "Track 1, Track 2 etc", or will it be possible to get the artist and track name information over Xbox Live (like Winamp etc does)?

What about if it's got an mp3 player connected? Will it be able to display track and artist data alongside the song?

Thanks arne :)

1) Are SNK Playmore games (Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4 + 5, etc.) going to be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 any time soon?

2) Is there a way to get backwards compatibility on Xbox 360 without Live? As in will Microsoft be shipping out backwards compatibility discs?

No clue on #1.

#2 will be addressed when the BC information is made public. I don't have much about BC right now as I mentioned before.

Fair enough, is there a date that it will be made public? Launch is only 10 days away, after all.

To be very honest rep. I am not really that impressed with what 360 is offering right now. Most of your titles are not running at 60 fps. Some of the graphics still have a this gen feel to it. I surely hope in the future the games will start to look leaps and bounds over what the xbox can do. Because you are asking people to pay 400 bucks for games that still look too similar to this generation of gaming.

All the info I have right now confirms what you already know (PDZ, Kameo), I don't have any info on anything else Rare has in the works. Whatever else they might be working on -- I know they wouldn't want me to steal their thunder.

Not only is that not a question, it's a pretty blatant troll. There's lots of threads out there for you to contaminate with this stuff.

Can you address the question asked a few times on the first page about minimum display resolutions of the 360? In short, will all games be rendered at 720p as a minimum, or upscaled to display at that resolution?

*off to assault kiosk*

oh, its not trolling. I am making a statement. I am an xbox fan and I am not impressed. Let your bosses and developers know. Give people a reason to spend 400 bucks on your system.

Do you know, or can you find out if the Creative Zen Xtra will work with the Xbox 360? I'd really like to know.

Also, how does the Xbox handle all those different mp3 players that don't have removable hard-drive functionality? Surely it has to have specific drivers for each one... This is I fear the Zen Xtra won't work: it doesn't have hard-drive functionality without additional drivers...

Thanks :)

This is a bit of a trainwreck. Arne, it's cool that you're answering questions, but you're not exactly bringing much new to the table here. That's fine of course, but GAF users are pretty well-informed and mostly only care about the hardball questions that you can't answer.

It may be beneficial if this thread gets closed and you just chime in at appropriate times through regular threads as you come across the opportunities. That seems to be what was intended from the start. I'll leave it up to you for now, though.

Yeah, you're right, that was my intent by being here. Once I get out of this thread... I'll be on other threads. :)
