Microsoft making at least four new IPs

Things to note:

1) Two new internal studios. Could one of them be Good Science (started in 2009 too) or are they two unannounced studios?

2) Seem to be focusing on new IP, but does this mean it is connected to the new internal studios?

can I just say, you're doing stellar work, TheOddOne. every time I see this thread bumped I know there's going to be some new titbits of info and that you'll be the one posting them.

really, excellent work. it's very appreciated.

Just wanted to say the same thing. Good job TheOddOne.

Yeah, well, who cares. Halo wars was a great game, it helped expand the universe and was a fresh take on the franchise.

I really like Halo Wars too. I would really like another game like that now, it doesn't have to be a Halo Wars 2 but another RTS for console in a similar style to Halo Wars (gameplay and control wise) would be great.

Surely Microsoft only releases Kinect spin-offs lately.

You know; Fable: The Journey. What more proof do you need?

I hope the low sales and middling review scores (kind of needs to be higher for 1st party in my opnion) of those games are an indicator that they don't need to make core games that only use Kinect.

Yeah it's pretty interesting seeing who has joined these studios. In most other threads it tends to be who has left.

I think Rare are going to come back in a big way next gen. It's easy to say they will still be irreverent but Im not so sure. They've been hiring new blood, who are no doubt eager to prove themselves.

Well, they have a Next-gen launch to try and impress. Still hoping to see a rebirth for Perfect Dark, Banjo and Viva Pinata. :D

All I say is that this might be some kind of collab, like T10 did with Playground Games. Would make tons sense, new Rare staff gets up and running and Lucid gets enough muscle to complete the game.

I can easily see this happening, especially when you consider Microsoft will be desperate to get PGR5 ready for the launch of the Durango.

Rare have been pretty absent this gen. But then again, Rare is nothing but a name to me. I think that nearly all the dev's from former glory Rare left the company.

At the moment, it seems like a 150 man strong team. So far we know that they have two projects running, one is another Kinect Sports for sure. The racing devs hires might be for the other project.

I thought they moved Kinect Sports to BigPark, considering they did the second game ...

Rare’s purchase is the biggest cautionary tale ever on how to not rush into things. They won’t rise like a phoenix from the ashes, too much damage has been done and even small successes will not even bring back that sense of pride they once had. I’m just sitting at the sidelines seeing how this is going unfold, there is a new president on the helm, new people being brought it, and they are starting to play a bigger role over all the MS studios (technology wise). It could all go horribly wrong, but still interesting to see where they are headed.

It was a co-production between Bigpark and Rare. This is why I think they are teaming up with Lucid.

I thought the recent job postings stated they wanted Devs with FPS experience....

I guess you're right, there were talks about two projects from Rare with one being an FPS...if the other one is a racer then Kinect Sports 3 is probably being made by Big Park. :P

Things are getting really exciting again with the next gen systems, hopefully soon there will be leaks about the games themselves...we had enough rumors about the specs.

Good finds The Odd One! I could be wrong but I believe you may have discovered PGR5.

It adds up and it will be nice to see Rare working on something other than Kinect games.

But weren't BigPark Studios working on a AAA game, to me that states something with production values ... not Kinect Sports ...

They also hired Paul Cartwright (Freelance concept artist at Evolution, makers of Motorstorm). Then there is this guy too.

What is really strange is that there are artist who worked on race games and there are artists who create more sci-fi/fantasty stuff. Strange divide.

I'm hoping this means Girl and the Pig is actually being made this time....

Urchin was Chris Seavor's project. Apparently he's "got all the designs" and doesn't write the possibility of making the game one day off, but he's not with Rare anymore.

By the way, great detective work, TheOddOne.

Well, they were looking for people experienced with action-adventure or FPS genres so that might be one project, with the racing game being the other. Perhaps they're taking a break from Kinect Sports for the time being or maybe there's yet another team.

It's obvious they are working on more then one racing game, from the devs they've hired. A TPS and a new big budget FPS are being made as well.

What else could there be? The London studio will be in charge of Kimect from what Phil Harrison said earlier.

Edit. The fact theyve hired the guys from Irritaional lends itself well to a possible RPG game.

Could work as a consultant on the game does not rule out that possibility ...

This guy worked with Big Park until at least 2011. His old site IWriteForGames.com is down now, but his portfolio said this:

Nice find. Big things coming out of Canada for Microsoft Studios...

Big Park, Black Tusk and Victoria.

Someone should dig up some dirt on Victoria; it's still unsure if they are a full studio working on new IP or a helper studio for Big Park and Black Tusk.

Yeah names don't really sell me on anything yet. I remember when I first heard/read about Big Park, I was really excited! Racing vets doing a racing game. The outcome? Kinect racing :/

Their latest game was Joyride Turbo, an XBLA kart racer with no Kinect functionality whatsoever.
(what the Kinect Joyride was supposed to be before they added Kinect)

I'm more excited for Durango and it's games than Sony. Love ND and all that but for some reason MS's big AAA titles have always garnered more attention from me. I'd love to see a return to Perfect Dark and am looking forward to see what MS comes out with. Exciting to see so many new studios working on games. It seems MS finally wised up and knew that this gen is going to be all about first party.

I think the developer had to prove its worth before being given a chance to make an AAA game. Giving an unproven studio the keys to a big budget project can go very wrong.
