Microsoft plan pre-TGS event (Xbox 360)

Microsoft is holding a press event for the Xbox 360 a day before the start of the Tokyo Game show.

Unlike Europe and North America, the Japanese launch price of the Xbox 360 is still unknown and it is expected that this and more will be revealed at the press day on Thursday 15th September, a day before the start of TGS.

Last week at Games Convention 2005 in Germany, it was announced that the Xbox 360 would be released in two SKUs with a core package at £209.99/$299 and the Xbox 360 package at £279.99/$399. Whether or not the Japanese market will receive the same SKUs should be answered on September 15th. Microsoft is still holding out on a release date, which is expected to be sometime in November.

I'm guessing.... but they are probably trying to avoid getting completely overshadowed again by the PS3 (see E3). Makes sense. If they show their stuff a little early they will be able to hold people's attention for a little longer this time.

Yes until Konami shows MGS4 :D :lol

They know they can't compete with Konami and Sony, so they are trying to get a little of the spotlight before TGS. Completely understandable.

It will be interesting to see which system will have the better/more playable games. X360 games will be near completion while the PS3 games will be alpha/beta stages. I don't think MS should be worried and I doubt one teser trailer can hurt MS. think X360 will have a better showing at TGS compared to ps3.

They will probably use this press conference to announce the price and launch date.

You are flat joking, right? The MGS4 teaser alone will ensure the success of the PS3, and Sony should have a bit more than that...

No, I am not joking. Metal Gear isn't that big in Japan as it is in NA and Europe. And like I said before, the PS3 software will in the beta or alpha stages running on beta kits compared to X360 software that will be running on final dev kits and will be near completion.

I am talking about playable games here.

It's not only MGS4,at TGS Sony will unveil all the PS3 japanese support and it will be huge without any doubt :D

Every game in the series has sold close to a million units in Japan. Is it as popular as it is in other countries? No, but its still pretty damn big over there. And are people forgetting E3 2000 that fast?

Sony and 3rd parties have been pretty quiet about PS3 games since E3, so there's a definite build up for TGS which is the next big show after that.

I think you're overestimating MGSs appeal a little.
It does have a nice following but it's no GT, GTA, Halo, etc.

The trailer will definitely get this board flowing tho.

I doubt it. I think they are saving that for the Feb 2006 show

I'm looking forward to not having to hear the "wait for the beta/alpha/final kits" excuse anymore...

I expect the 360 to be the bigger showing as well.

The games will be near launch quality, more titles will be playable, and we'll probably get even more announcements.

However, the 360 ~should have had the better showing at E3 as well, but Sony completely blew away expectations. I still don't expect the PS3 to have any significant playable titles, so barring a complete unveiling of the final hardware (w/some specifications against the 360), or a monster list of publisher signings, I think it will mostly be a chance for Sony to beat it's chest to pull attention away from Microsoft.

Of course, the MGS4 showing ~should be THE EVENT of TGS.

Yes as you doubted they would unveil something at the Playstation Meeting and that MGS4 would be showed before E3 2006 ;)

Most people won't be looking forward to a MGS4 trailer for its gameplay. It will show us true next-generation graphics and interactivity, hopefully.

Anyway, I don't think it matters one bit how MS do at TGS, X360 will be successful (because ballsup after ballsup they haven't lost consumers, or so it seems).

I'm sure they'll have a good showing in your opinion. But I bet that the Xbox booth will not nearly as crowded as the PS3/Sony booth will be. The X360 has a 90-degree hill to climb to gain respect in the Japanese market. If they're showing "Wall Guy" videos they will most certainly lose out.

IMO, this is the most fascinating psychology of this next gen so far.

Microsoft has made a ridiculous number of flubs in the past 4 months or so, doing things that the diehard XBox fans said was impossible and before they happened, said those things would kill the 360.

But, here we are and the 360 hype seems stronger than ever, with a launch that looks to break all kinds of records, and the most insane bundles you've ever imagined. We expect such things from Nintendo fans and even Sony fans (ignoring certain realities or accepting realities that seemed impossible before), but I think it just goes to show that Microsoft has made the transition and cemented their place in this industry, including the fan affinity arena.

I am with sonycowboy on this. X360 will pawn PS3 at TGS; I mean what racing games does PS3 have? I doubt they will have a GT trailer ready by then. Competing with PGR3, RR6 etc, MS are going to steamroll them.

Ummm, why wouldn't they? The year that the PS2 was unveiled Sony had alot at TGS

For those who missed our stories on the PlayStation 2 announcement last week, the new Sony platform, PlayStation 2, was there in full regalia. Sony showed off fully playable versions of Tekken Tag Tournament, Gran Turismo 2000, Eternal Ring, Dark Cloud, A-Train, PoPoLoCrois 3, and viewable games, such as Square's gorgeous Ehrgeiz sequel, The Bouncer, and KOEI's epic Kessen.

TGS will be pretty big for PS3. As a Japanese company Sony cares about the Japanese market more than any other, and will have a major push towards the PS3 present. MS better have some serious aces up their sleeves to not get blown completely out of the place.

Having Blue Dragon and Knights in some kind of playable format would help, as would something from Square/Enix besides FFXI...

Even then I expect Sony to be trumpeting the "real" Final Fantasy, as well as locking up all the important Japanese franchises long term. The real question will be if Sony is still looking at March of next year in Japan? If so, they will definately have some good software on show, as that is 6 mos away.

IMO Heavenly Sword (which we know is playable) looks better than any of the 360 games I've seen so far)

Those are all Japanese games! I don't see a single Sony America or Sony Europe title in there. Most of the SCEA and SCEE guys are probably going to wait for E3 2006 or release media for their games as the release date.

dude FFXII isn't even out yet! Why the hell would they show FFPS3? That doesn't make any sense.

So, what games will MS show off? Okamoto's second game seems like a given, but I wonder what other surprises there will be?

I doubt they'll show anything at the pre-tgs event. Probably just launch details.

I do want to see what MGS Japan is doing. Especially the Phantom Dust team. Hopefully they have something to show at/during TGS.

They will announce FF, not show it. Add RE5, Ridge Racer (you are insane if you think it won't be on PS3), etc...

Sony will show their hand at TGS, they ALREADY showed more than we ever thought they would at E3. Also, all the hot PS2 titles will be there as well. And what isn't playable - Sony will have videos on display like they did at E3.

The real question I want to know is if Blue Dragon will be shown in any kind of format for the 360. We've seen no gameplay yet from either that or Knights. Those are the 360 games I'm looking at. Those and RR6 would help gain my interest.

I think both Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey will be there, but only in video form.

I think SCEA will be there, showing off Lair and maybe even L.A. Noir.

Remember Square's Millenium Conference? Still, I don't think they'll show off FFXIII either.

The press conference is the perfect place to debut games. On the show floor, you don't really get your 15 minutes of fame as you would if you were a featured game during a PC. It's also in Microsoft's best interest during the press conference to provide a whole ton of support with specific games to sell the console as a whole to the Japanese audience.

No one thinks RR won't be on PS3, but its unlikely Namco is going to undercut themselves by announcing it before the X360 version is released. And most likely 'FFXIII' won't be shown as FFXII is yet to come. More likely is FFVII:r.

You're right.

My guess is Sony will make a big PS3 showing there to try and overshadow the 360. If they are launching in Spring then this is the last major show before then right? E3 2006 would be too late or cutting it short. I think by now they would have enough game development to start showing off titles. They probably also realize the 360 is trying hard to gain more Japan support and I don't think Sony or Nintendo for that matter just want to sit and let that slide. I'm wondering how well the 360 launch will go over there though since the launch titles seem like more of the same that the Japanese weren't too hot on to begin with for the Xbox. I think the reactions at the TGS will show that if the only interest Japanese gamers will be FFXI or PGR3 and RR5. They would be smart to show off some Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon stuff even if it's a way off. In the meantime to counteract their launch they will hype the PS3 letting people for sure know that it is around the corner and hype their holiday titles for the PS2.

Nintendo probably won't show much new and maybe pimp out the Micro and DS. If they are launching Revolution next holiday they still have a couple shows before then to show their hand.

More likely is FFVII:r.

If that happens, MS might as well give up in Japan. A remake of FFVII for PS3 with MGS4 and everything else will bury the 360 before it even gets off the ground. Too bad, too, because some of the Japanese software looks promising.

I think you guys are insane if you think MS will come close to matching Sonys hype at TGS. They've got all the important games on lockdown, Ms just cant compete with them over there. Im more interested by that fact that MS have decided to dedicate an entire Japanese event on 360 just before TGS.

Im with phatsaqs, id like to see what MGS Japan are upto, particulary the Phantom Dust team, and Okomoto other games. Theres Dead Rising and NNN .

Sony should have some impressive stuff on display, even if its not playable, the videos are sure to make us go crazy.

:lol agreed

PS3 still has plenty of time before launch, but for MS, it's definitely about time for 'put up or shut up'.... unless they push X360's Japanese launch to spring 2006
suicide

Sony is quiet right now and it reminds me of how they were before E3...and we all know what happened there.

I honestly don't see M$ outperforming Sony at the TGS, especially on their home turf.

CG was so 2000, man. :D

It's all about real-time that looks so good people think it's CG... and apparently still do, even when everyone and their mother has come out to say that it wasn't CG.
