Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

What does Adam Orth actually do at Microsoft?

I've never seen someone in a position called "director" get disavowed by his own company.

I have a friend that works in the industry and he told me months ago that Microsoft's end game is to use the next Xbox as a data compiler. It's just a way for them to read the statistics and figure out how they're going to plaster your gaming space with data fueled ads. Watch your browsing habits, know exactly what you're playing, when you're playing, and for how long, and to see what percentage of time you're using to screw around with apps. It's like a Nielson box, but only for gaming.

Microsoft: Our next xbox is amazing..always online...always connected, you can download updates in the back ground and it is ready to go when you turn it on

Customer: Ok, can I play it offline?

Microsoft: No! Why would you want that?

Customer 1: My back room in my house where I have my xbox, the wifi is spotty

Microsoft: well sorry we don't want you as a customer

Customer 2: My internet drops multiple times,

Microsoft: We don't want you as a customer

Customer 3: I actually have great internet, but I have a second xbox at my parents house I play when I visit, they go to bed early, and they don't have internet.

Microsoft: we don't want you as a customer

Customer 4: This seems to be a form of DRM and I am uncomfortable supporting it

Microsoft: WE DEFINITELY don't want you as a customer

Customer 4's friend: Wait, I don't have a problem with DRM, but I have 3 kids in my home, each with their own xbox. I recently bought a Lego game and they each took turns playing it

Microsoft: we don't want you as a customer unless you want to buy that game 3 times.

Customer 5: I buy used games from time to time, but I also buy new games.

Microsoft: we don't want you as a customer, unless you only buy new

Customer 5: But some new games I buy with used money...and others I buy new after playing them used..like Gears 1 I bought used, but I bought Gears 2 and 3 new

Microsoft: We don't want that. We don't want you as a customer

Customer 6: I am in the military and play my xbox, but can't connect

Microsoft: we don't want you as a customer.

Customer 7: SO the only reason always online is a form of DRM...

Microsoft: no comment.
This is why i can't believe they're doing it.
Again, no way they're this crazy.

That Third Strike gif is glorious, well done

I can imagine the crowd at Evo would all just gather around the console and smash into pieces if that were to happen in a hype game.

"Your Station, Your Game, Your Way. It's the only "deal" that makes sense. Pre-order PlayStation 4 today!"

"The "deal" you deserve - Pre-order PlayStation 4 today"

Something social outcasts and losers without friends play .

Am I doing it right?

What I don't understand is why Local Multiplayer games always get neglected.

Examples Fighting games and Multiplayer Platformers.

Apparently having real friends I hang out with makes me out of touch....

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
Fantastic.

FFXII HD with always online. That Yiazmat battle.

Someone should .gif that.

Start of battle->(Spongebob text) 12+ hours later->Last few squares of 1000 bars of health left.

X-box disconnects.

wow you like to spin things for sure

What exactly have I posted that is spin? I haven't defended Microsoft. I certainly haven't defended always-online, it's a sales disaster waiting to happen. In the post you quoted, I stated a fact: which is that nothing is confirmed.

I've also posted some stuff disagreeing with the notion that this particular scandal (again, the Twitter + news stories, NOT the feature itself) will have much influence on sales and backed that up with some empirical examples. I've also posted some stuff discussing why I don't think we can read much into Microsoft's (or, in many cases, ANY) "no comment" statement. None of it was defending any particular company, let alone Microsoft, just analyzing their logic.

I don't see any spin, but feel free to point out anything I might have overlooked.
