This is hilarious. Partly because I get this impression from how dumb his comments are that he's just being a dick and he doesn't actually know at all about persistent online requirements. . . making this even stupider, if possible. Why become such a huge shit-magnet for no reason?

I don't understand why working at Microsoft makes it so easy for you to become your own worst PR nightmare. If this was the first time for an employee there I'd understand, but c'mon. Do they really need a leaflet for avoiding these situations?
Disagreeing with this guy on what he said and in the way he said it I don't feel a lot of sympathy, but my real disappointment is with the project he's defending.

To state again, the only problem I have with the "just trolling" argument was Adam's first few tweets that weren't directed at anyone. We're still unclear if any of the NeXbox being always-online is true or not -_-

I guess I am just wondering why go Internet fucking nuts before they have announced the console exists. Lets not even talk about the actual details of how it works.
I don't know if I will buy a Internet must be on to play device. But why not just wait to see what it is actually gonna be instead on making new threads over and over that the next Xbox might require internet and complain over and over about it?

On a serious note, if something actually similar to OnLive was planned for Durango early in its life cycle I think we'd have heard about it. Friends of mine who tried that service were not impressed by the input latency -- maybe in a decade when gigabit internet is common and wireless standards have further matured.

Nah I said it is better for the industry and game design to build for social always on gaming. Getting more people to connect their game systems to the Internet by making it a requirement is good for the game industry and for people who like playing online. You can accomplish a lot more with the functionality of a device if you require an online connection. Game developers can also make a lot more money if their audience is connected to the Internet and has a credit card tied to their account. If you allow people to use the thing offline then you have to always design around those people. As I said if they have some good ideas of how to use this always on connection then it's worth it, if it is for nothing other than DRM then it is terrible obviously.
For me it's largely a non-factor. I've been living like my console only works when Xbox Live is present for 7 years now, so aside from additional functionality nothing would change for me. If Microsoft is at all on the fence for this I am pushing them to go in this direction. Offline gamers are holding back game design and could hold back this market from competing effectively with mobile gaming. Analysts and Wall Street are chomping at the bit to declare game consoles obsolete and outmoded. So MS should throw a curve ball and make it clear that they're targeting the same money pot that Facebook and iOS have been exploiting in recent years.

Lol, it would be silly for him to lose his job. I live in Wisconsin and wasn't offended by his comment. Making light of it. Shame about the always online stuff, though. Sounds like it is real.

This. While everyone is up in arms about "always-online". Almost every feature Sony announced at the PS Meeting that was new and awesome, requires you to be online.
Gaikai, Ustream, share to Facebook, play while you download and etc.

But it doesn't require an internet connection to play your physical games. Which is the point of a games console. If my internet's out, I may not be able to share my screenshots on Facebook (or whatever) but at least I can still play.

Its a PR nightmare for the nextbox, it makes the studio look really bad. It's entirely uncalled for as nobody has asked his opinion of it, and he's actually writing some deluded comparisons.
He could get fired, and in an "always-online" world you should be careful what you tweet.
MY problem is if the device is always on, how do you separate silver and gold users now? I expect the most bullshit paywall ever.

He's saying you could still play CoD Campaign or LAN offline on the PS4. Durango would require internet to even boot the game up.
You aren't required to be online to play a game on the PS4.

Sony is giving you reasons to want to be online. "Internet required" is forcing you, whether you want to or not.
Not seeing this argument at all Adam, considering that its been tried recently in two very high profile disasters: Diablo III, Sim City. You'll have to back it up with more than you are now, that's for sure.
Sony's approach allows the user to opt-in while still enabling them to make use of the system they bought even if they don't, while the approach MS is rumored to be taking forces the user to opt-out disabling access to pretty much everything in the process, for no good reason.

But you can play games without an Internet connection. More importantly, you don't need to depend on external servers even when you do have an internet connection.
Their servers will definitely collapse on launch because you can never test these things well enough. And then they'll have a PR nightmare and Sony would gain.
