Microsoft Surface Tablet announced

Hm, that kinda sucks.
They should really have a mid-tier tablet in-between the RT and PRO model that cost no more than 500-600 dollars, has slightly lower specs/internal storage, but still has proper windows and decent pen integration

Pen?
Wacoom pen?

Ah, nope.

lack of digitizer in the w700 is the only reason I probably wont bite Handwriting and drawing would only be a gimmick for me, but a pretty cool one.

I used an ipad for like 2 years, a nexus 7 for a few months now, and next yea it will be microsoft's turn for me. So far ipad still wins.

I will concur with that. As of now, I think iPad is best on a tablet simply because it has so many apps designed with iPad in mind. I love Android on the phone but Android tablets really lack tablet specific apps when compared to iPad and for that reason I see no point in purchasing one when I already have an Android phone. Definitely interested in Win8 tablet though. I like metro and the live tiles

Yeah, but why not have the best of both worlds?

Because they aren't going to make a big change to their controller for a feature that they want people to do with their phone, tablet, or desktop.

I really think that MS has a vision of people using their Windows RT or 8 tablet to control and interact with media in the living room.

Yes, but they don't have to make it their "main" controller, so to speak. They'll have the Nextbox controller (which will be like the 360 one; standard stuff) and a tablet/controller hybrid like the Wii U, so that they can have games that utilize both. Stuff that's more integral to the gameplay than what Microsoft demoed last E3 (I think it was E3, right?).

Who knows, either way I'm definitely excited with where Microsoft could be going. Now if they'd only drop Kinect...
I know it was successful, but it's like the main/only part of MS's strategy I hate, besides their decision to focus less on 1st party games.

Yeah, I see what you're saying there. Only time will tell.
I wonder how much storage it will have? 16GB?

Surface RT comes with 32 or 64 and the Pro comes with 64 or 128.

Ah, so I'm assuming that it'll be a 50$ difference between the two RT's then? If they go with a 300$ and 350$ price tag, respectively for each device...that could be a real game changer. I guess it all comes down to marketing and how Microsoft treats the store that hosts the apps at this point.

That's my assumption.

$300 and $350 would be great for the RT.

Don't get your hopes up. I still doubt they'll go as low as 300$.

It's supposed to be a high-quality product that competes with the iPad and that can do more than the iPad (if it weren't for all those apps). They don't want to undercut the OEMs too much, either.

I see prices between 400$ and 600$ (depending on storage size and cover/no cover) as more realistic.

Price. Why buy a tablet bundled with the console if nearly any touch device you already own can act as one.

It could though. I'm currently on my laptop with trackpad so I can't sketch what I mean. I'll try to visualise after clasico's over :P

If they show that it's worth it, then people will buy it, or it could always be an accessory like Kinect.

What if this device this device is only sold at MS stores like rumored....after all the waiting it'll be too much of a disappointment.

It's not rumored, that is actually happening.

And how is it a disappointment? If there is no store in your area, just order it online from the Microsoft store.

Because "normal" people like to touch, feel and try out a tablet before dropping hundreds of dollars usually.

Samsung Ativ it is then.

Its a disappointment because i have a $500 at Best Buy, if i can't buy it from there then i have to look at the alternative.

Or will they?

The storage space difference between the two Nexus 7 models is 8GB. The difference between the two RT models is 32GB. The price difference between the two is going to be at least $100.

The 32GB base model will also not be under $399. I'm 100% certain of that.

Dumb question but...

Will this run WP8 apps? I'm mostly interested in XBLA games. If not, is it going to just have its own set of XBLA games?

It will not run Windows Phone apps, but Windows 8 has its own Xbox section with Xbox Windows games (dumb name, I know).

Hmmm...I wonder if since porting is easy between the platform (right?) we'll see a lot of the mobile games ported (doodle jump, tentacles, stuff like that).

I'd definitely buy one just for that alone.

Probably 350/450 with some launch bundle discount. The Surface seem to have better fit and finish than iPad.

The reason I don't believe the 299 price point is that MS didn't low ball the Kinect price. They could have, but they didn't.

Been exposed to Windows 8 and Metro development via my University. So far, I'm enjoying developing for Metro a lot more than iOS and Android.

Hopefully Surface is the catalyst in making the Metro Store an established marketplace.

People confused about the lack of price prior to launch, lack of marketing, only being sold in MS stores, etc. are forgetting this really isn't a typical product launch. It isn't something MS is putting out there to dominate the market with and advertise heavily. It's more of a template device to show the OEM's how to make Windows 8/RT tablets. The OEM's are still the key factor in this relationship. Similar to the Nexus phones for Android, they aren't marketed heavily. They are a template for the Android OEM's.

Also MS can't be undercutting their OEM partners and risk alienating them.

I don't get how MS' XBLA publishing history is so strong, but their Windows lineup is so shitty in comparison. Especially since the RT tablets won't run Steam.

I saw a million and a half Surface ads on the train home. I still don't understand what "Click in." means, but the ads are at least somewhat eye-catching.

The only thing that makes sense is the touch cover clicking in, which is such a weird thing to put front and center in your marketing. Or maybe the fact that you can use more peripherals?

It's like an iPad but with a real keyboard! I think MS is really pushing the 'hybrid' idea as opposed to just a tablet.

Yes, and that it is a hybrid with only a couple mm thick cover. Those covers and the VaporMg are probably the only differentiators between them and everyone else.

I think MS' main goal(ok, maybe a secondary or tertiary) is to push their touch covers as the next standard for keyboard input. There is a lot of money to be made if other vendors start using those things.

About the type cover ...

There are a lot of accessories that do the same thing(speaking in general about accessories, not specifically capacitative keyboards), some look like ass, some don't. That "thing" you just posted, is the former ;) Although it does bring up the point that the MS covers would only work for a tablet that has a stand.

Is that made out of recycled blue jeans? Like a pair of jorts for your tablet.

It seems to be the gamers who prefer sticks and buttons are willing to pay a lot more than the touch screen causal gamers. (That's the nicest way I can put it.)

I don't understand how Sony can fail so badly on the PSP Mini market either.
