Microsoft unveils Recall, and it's really creepy

corporation all they care about is $$$$

Big AI is watching you.

And I wouldn't trust the disclaimer that all of that Copilot Recall information stays local.

It will, at launch... a few updates in when people forget and it surely will be phoning home.

Microsoft's Recall AI feature must be a dream come true for every three letter agency in the US.

Recall won't work with every Windows 11 computer. You'll have to buy one of several fresh new "Copilot Plus PCs" powered by Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite chips, which have the neural processing unit (NPU) required for Recall to work.

Is MS trying to kill Qualcomm or something?

Recall, can you find the video I watched the other day with the 2 brunettes, cant remember their names.

At first glance, the Recall feature seems like it may set the stage for potential gross violations of user privacy. Despite reassurances from Microsoft, that impression persists for second and third glances as well. For example, someone with access to your Windows account could potentially use Recall to see everything you've been doing recently on your PC, which might extend beyond the embarrassing implications of pornography viewing and actually threaten the lives of journalists or perceived enemies of the state.

What in the fuck are Microsoft thinking...? They must be over there smoking some God like crack or something. I can't imagine anyone coming up with this sober.

This will get hacked and they will be able to see a record of everything you've ever done on your computer. Indexed. This is profoundly stupid.

I never thought I'd see the day were it could be safer to take care of your finances on your cellphone. But here goes Microsoft speeding us into the future.

This is just Time Capsule from MacOS.
Or even more like Rewind.ai -- which has been popular on Mac for a while now and basically does what Recall does.

edit: also, Rewind.ai already runs local on your M-series chip. Microsoft is promising the same thing... but despite what they say, I would always assume any data that MS touches is getting piped straight to every intelligence agency under the sun.

I'm glad I have a MacBook Pro TBH, I only really use my Windows machines for PC gaming these days and if MS wants to spy on me while I'm gaming they're going to be very sad at finding out how bad at games I am

Yeah, I'm going to disable this one immediately. It's a cool feature, but I'll wait for the first articles of abuse and violations and see how this is handled.

Just need to wait for Winaero Tweaker or some other sources on the internet to tell you how to disable this by editing some registry files.

It's nothing more than a glorified auditing tool. At work I sometimes install trackers on employee computers so their boss knows what they're doing all the time.

I hate this a lot. Expect bosses around the world to have instant access to every action you do, and for how long, etc. The tech already exists out there, but to have it baked in to the OS and easily searchable/sortable, whew boy.

"I noticed you opened MS Word at 9:03AM but you didn't start typing until 9:15AM, what can you tell us about that?"

Yeah I'd rather not have Microsoft make and endless stream of screenshots of my desktop and feed them into a model, thank you very much.

What problem does this even solve?

It is the future of smart devices unfortunately. MS is also making bitlocker on default, you will need MS account with it. No more local Windows login

If it's all for optimising my work flow and added security, it is all good and let's support MS hard work

My immediate first thought was how this might be useful in a place of business. But it still presents many long term security and privacy risks.

"Clippy, what's the midget bukkake porn I watched 14 months ago that I seemed to really like based on my loud moaning to the microphone during climax? Thanks. ☺️"

What do you fuckers see on your PC that you are so scared of people to see.
Hello sir.
I'm a representative from Amazon and would just like to pop in for a moment to look around your home.
I just want to see what sort of interests you have so we can use that to compile a profile on you for marketing purposes.
After we have compiled a profile around your purchases. I'm then going to sell this profile to various other company's but unfortunately I cannot say to whom or when.

Sir, please you don't have to be hostile.
I only want to pop in for a moment. It's not an issue sir.
It's not like you have anything to hide, right!?

Sir.......SIR!

Wonder if EU regulators will prevent this from rolling out in the EU.

Privacy-wise this is a thermonuclear disaster waiting to happen.

Not interested for my home PC, but it can be really useful on your work PC.
That's how I'm thinking of maybe using it. And my "search history" or whatever is really tame I think, but I still don't need MS holding on to it
