I'm looking mostly at the Sony ones since I already ahve compatible MemStick media. Plus, I'm a Sony whore.

Really, though, I'm probably looking in the $300-500 range, though I *might* be able to stretch it to $600.

And MiniDV media is re-recordable right? I've been wanting a digital camcorder for awhile, but I have little experience shopping for them because I couldn't afford one until now!

Yes, but don't.

Even though digital doesn't degrade, the tape does with extended wear, and MiniDV itself from the getgo is kind of sensitive to dropout errors if treated poorly.

Dunno how you'd have to pay nowadays for one, but the Canon Optura 20 is a pretty good one. Definitely not professional, but probably the best you can have in the consumer range as far as I know.

Just wanted to make sure. DV cassettes do seem pretty cheap, so its not a huge hassle or anything, but just in case, its good to know that they're re-recordable.

JVC 1

This one seems pretty good, but it uses SD, not MS which disappoints me. :( I know that's not the most important thing, but I already have a MemStick I can use.

Also, these two:

Sony 1

Sony2

I know that it's out of your budget...but this is my camera...

Indeed, that is FAR out of my range. :) As nice as it'd be, though, I'm up for something more compact at the moment anyway.

Hmm I might have to check out the canon Optura, though. Thanks for the suggeestions! Of course, if anyone has anything to add, please do!

PV-GS65. The cheapest 3CCD miniDV out there. I recommend it.
I just ordered one. It got pretty good reviews around the web, and at that price ($500) it's pretty much in a class by itself in terms of features and video quality.

I'm still hanging in with my old Sony DCR-TRV310 (Digital 8) until the HDR-FX1 comes down to $2000 or so. ... soon? Please? :( (it's down to $3080 at Amazon)
