I'm not following. I always plan to save coins for that sweet exoskeleton and then instead spend them on a dinosaur head or whathaveyou.

As far as I could tell your popularity level rises due to the amount of hearts and comments you receive on questions.
Similarly style rises by receiving hearts/comments on Miifotos you share and by changing your clothes daily.
So although I didn't answer many questions, the ones I did were fairly popular and enough to hit the level cap.

I think you can just keep tapping your Mii for more questions (maybe?).
But if you don't have a lot of people on your friend list it might make it hard to get some of those miitomo points which are tied in with how many posts you read from other people and how many people like and comment on your posts.
