Alt-right poster boy Milo Yiannopoulos is going on Real Time with HBO host Bill Maher this week in what will likely be the least friendly chat of 2017.

What makes their upcoming Friday conversation even more noteworthy is that Yiannopoulos is going to be the top-of-the-show guest, which means there's no panel to get between Milo and Maher. Yiannopoulos will get all the spotlight, which seems to be his general goal.

The move is a part of a more-recent trend from Real Time to have ”liberal agitators" such Piers Morgan and Tomi Lahren on the show, guests who Maher tries to eviscerate at every turn. He'll likely try to do the same with Milo, so surely we can expect a few fireworks.

Maher's defense:

”Liberals will continue to lose elections as long as they follow the example of people like Mr. Scahill whose views veer into fantasy and away from bedrock liberal principles like equality of women, respect for minorities, separation of religion and state, and free speech," Maher responded in a statement.

"If Mr. Yiannopoulos is indeed the monster Scahill claims — and he might be — nothing could serve the liberal cause better than having him exposed on Friday night."

Maher also slammed Scahill's criticism of his views on Islam, saying: "My comments on Islam have never veered into vitriol."

The Intercept co-founder Jeremy Scahill cancelled his appearance on the show in protest over having a neo-nazi as a guest:

Scahill, who said the people at the show ”have become like family to me," said he respected Maher despite having major disagreements with him.

"I passionately disagree with — and find offensive — some of Bill's views, particularly when his comments on Islam and Muslims veer into vitriol. At the same time, I have deep respect for Bill and his voice on many other issues."

But he said Yiannopoulos' appearance was "many bridges too far."

"He has ample venues to spew his hateful diatribes," Scahill wrote. ”There is no value in ‘debating' him. Appearing on ‘Real Time' will provide Yiannopoulos with a large, important platform to openly advocate his racist, anti-immigrant campaign. It will be exploited by Yiannopoulos in an attempt to legitimize his hateful agenda."

And before anyone comes in with "we should debate the nazi!" here's the important reminders:

What's the point of having only people that he agrees with on his show? In this case maybe some idiots will tune in to watch and will start questioning their beliefs.

I watch Maher but expect Milo followers will have a video on YouTube called "Milo destroys Liberal Maher and drinks Liberal Tears" after the show.

Looking forward to seeing what happens.

I'm going to wait and see the debate before i comment on Bill Maher and Milo.

I hope he keep his promise and doesn't softball

It's Maher. Hell, seeing Jim Jefferies go at Piers Morgan was magic.

Yelling match in 5, 4, 3, 2...

My expectation is Maher will cave on certain issues that align with his worldview and ultimately find a new bro though.

Yep. That is the whole point of having debates. You rarely change the view of the person you are debating but you can cause their followers to reconsider if you put forward your case well. Even if you manage to make 1% of his followers question their beliefs, thats 1% less nazi's in the world.

Bill Maher just became alt-right!

LMAO. I can see this happening on GAF definitely.

It's the Bill Maher show. The whole point is to have the other end of the spectrum mixed in the show to present their ridiculous arguments. And Bill calls them out for their insanity to their face.

Milo has not been seriously challenged by anyone with credibility in a debate, you want this sort of thing to happen, he lives in a bubble and goes on "safe" areas, he wont even debate right leaning sources who disagree with him because his rhetoric does not hold up to stringent analysis, its too theatrical.

I would love to see him debate someone of note, someone who can outright pull him on his stuff.

This right here, the far right wasnt gonna toon into the show regardless, if anything maybe some of Mahers arguments will stick on them a bit.

So, by your logic, OP, should we be boycotting Amazon and other booksellers for carrying his book?

They're technically giving him a platform.

Also Real Time is a debate show. He will be challenged.

Bill's audience will clap when he talks. They will boo when Milo talks. What Bill or Milo says is irrelevant, neither one is going to be persuaded by the other. Only thing I really want to see is one of Bill's panelists punch Milo in the face.

Milo isn't someone who has an alternate viewpoint for Maher to debate with. The entire purpose of his existence is to paint targets for vicious harassment campaigns and make money off speaking engagements. Milo isn't there to discuss, he's there to self-promote. Maher thinks he's going to score buckets on a fascist but he's just giving him free airtime. You don't debate people whose position is "I wish for the non-existence of minorities."

P.S. Maher is a shit debater, Jerry Springer with a late night timeslot.

.

That's the sad expected truth. And he'll get to whine more about liberals and their intolerance of intolerance which he always loves to do.

If this was CNN or any other "neutral" platform, then I'd have a problem with this. It's not like the people watching Maher's show are suddenly going to swing over to Milo's base.

I expect him not to actually, I believe Maher has enough integrity to remain hostile to Milo fucking Yiannopoulos. But I'm still waiting for Maher to own his role in the rise of anti Muslim sentiment

Yup, said it in the last Bill Maher thread.

This will at least make for some excellent television.

I guess I'll get out my popcorn. I don't think anybody will be eviscerated, though. Milo will get the chance to dogwhistle to his followers and do a "get a load of this guy" routine at Maher.

This Milo guy seems the text book definition of an attention whore...Giving him more attention is probably the wrong thing to do. This is probably the wrong guy to have on...No substance, just a guy with mental issues who craves attention...Kind of like Trump and Morgan. I would rather they get proper help...And stop causing such damage by leaving the public arena...

Haven't seen too much of Maher before, but really impressed with the level which he debates at...

MUnited83

For you.
I sure hope Maher or someone brings up that the trite he engages in doesn't count as free speech and that he regularly harasses, doxes, and incites otherts to violence and harassment of others, none of those being actions protected by the first amendment.

Not everyone reads GAF. I've seen people defend him not knowing the full scope of what he stands for.

Why would a debate change the opinion of dumb people? If you're the type of person to jump to Milo's defense without bothering to look up who he actually is then you're already too far gone.

Good. Tomi Lehren and Piers Morgan got fucking shamed on his show in the last two weeks alone. I look forward to Milo getting completely outclassed.

HStallion

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I'll give this the benefit of a doubt in hopes that Maher will tear him a new one but knowing Milo he'll bring up Muslim and Islam or something Maher can get on board with and then it becomes a lot of softball BS and passive aggressive crap instead of an out right tear dear down of Milo.

Maher is really far from perfect and I haven't watched his show in years, but I'm really surprised at the people thinking he's gonna bend over for this gross little nazi fuck. If he does then we can all be done with him, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Also, Maher's Islamaphobia is religious and not racial. That's a pretty key difference between the two.

I'm behind the ACLU on this. Discussion and discourse in an "academic" setting especially is more necessary than its ever been. To fully defeat a position, you have to understand their position almost as well as they do. Placing these people on a stage also highlights their rediculous positions instead of pushing them into the shadows where they remain these vague concepts and ideals that people can pretend are being suppressed unduly.

I'm sort of okay with this if Maher just blasts him into oblivion and calls out his idiotic positions.

If he just lets him ramble and asserts, "both sides same, " then forget it.

Semi-related, but I saw Milo did an intro to an alt-right science fiction collection. It was absolute trash to no one's surprise. Unreadably bad.

Guy isn't as smart as he, or his followers think he is. He just needs to be taken to task and beaten senseless. In a debate, of course.

Can you really call a guy that spouts offensive things specifically for money a 'Neo-Nazi'?
I don't buy for a second that he believes anything he espouses.

And I was just starting to come back to the show after dropping him for having that aids cure crank on.

After having piers Morgan told to fuck off, there might be some chance this isn't a total cluster fuck, i still think no good can come of this.
