where's the point of having these different kinds of rock?

(granite, diorite, andesite) ... back when i played on PC you had ... stone.
Similarly, 3 different types of wood...

How do you randomly join other player worlds? I was playing survival last night, someone came in, killed me, and I exited shortly after. He wasn't in my friends list, so how was that feasible? Can I do the same?

You sure it was another human player and not a monster? (a Creeper killed me without warning by exploding on me while my back was turned) 😮

Tempted to pick it up. My first and only experience was on the 360. I played survival a bit and wasn't creative enough in creative mode...

Different colors for decorative purposes. Polished granite makes cool floors.

There are actually 6 different types of wood. Each of them makes a totally different style of door. For example, spruce seems intended for making snowy lodge sorts of buildings.

My wife and I are playing local coop. So there is no way for her character to play my world without me being there? It also looks like there is no way for my character to start it and then drop out or idle ( without starving).

hmmm, i guess that's neat ... it's really sorta bothersome in the console version, seeing has how inventory management is a lot more tedious here.

6 types of wood also means 6 types of planks, 6(?) types of saplings - when before, you had ... 1 each? (i do recall having multiple types of raw wood, but once you made it into planks, there'd be only one kind. Am i misremembering?)

I'm not sure, but I think early on there was regular wood and birch which all became the same kind of planks, then at some point they added jungle which changed things up, and then spruce along with its different style of trees, and then the others came later as they added more biomes.

Meh, so this is my first time with minecraft. I was enjoying the first maybe 4 hours, glad I did what I did of the tutorial cuz I would have missed something and been bored or frustrated Im sure.

But this game is going to take friggen forever to build anything cool. I dont know that i wan tto spend 100s of hours just to build a cool castle or something. Then... Im also not sure the creative mode will hold my attention for long.

Hoping I can get the 1 other person I know with the game to play around together, I feel like that might up my interest. I'm worried I just missed the train onj this on PC when my friends were playing and now, alone, it's not the kind of game that's going to hold my attention. Should have waited for physical.

turn on host privileges?

You can't starve in peaceful difficulty, but that also means there aren't any monsters.

Peaceful doesn't lock you out of any achievements though, it's still technically survival. Might be easier for her to progress and build without having to worry about monsters anyway.

Anybody know if you can gift games from the eShop? I know you could do it on WiiU by buying a download code.

I want to send this to my brother, but can't figure out how to.

I had not played minecraft since early java versions (really early), and i had forgotten the amazing feeling of discovering a huge subterrenean system. I discovered this one purely by accident by digging randomly underneath my base.

I'm digging much more hours into this than i anticipated

This game is online-enabled, correct? Would anyone want to start a fresh world from scratch together? I also haven't played since the early days. How do people go about setting something like this up?

Definitely was a human player, but the name was ]]]]]]]] or something like it. He followed me around a bit, before he hit me, we started fighting. I hit him into a lake below, he ate food and climbed back up, then he knocked me down.

Is this not supposed to happen? Or is it like a dummy AI? Definitely played like a human.

Edit: Checked my friends list, apparently I played with someone on my list, so that explains it!

What kind of stupid question is this?

The one with the physical buttons and analog sticks. Just like every game that's ever existed.

I mean it'd be nice to not be a jerk. I'm asking for my little niece, I've never played it on iPad or elsewhere. If you got nothing nice to say, let someone who is nice respond.

The iPad version has infinite worlds and has access to realms(dedicated servers)
Other than that unless I'm missing something, the switch version is identical but with physical buttons.

FYI: my daughter is 6 and she has access to minecraft on an iPad, PS4 and a Switch and she plays it on the iPad the most...

The virtual buttons don't seem to be a problem for her at all.

She likes playing on the PS4 too and doesn't seem interested in the Switch version.

Just downloaded. I want to play on peaceful difficulty, but I feel cheap doing it. I just HATE dealing with monsters, but then I feel like I'm taking a big chunk out of Survival mode.

Is there an option to invite only certain people or at least approve join requests? I expect quite a few people will have some 'friends' they don't directly know - eg from forums like this, or from playing other games. A completely open drop-in system seems very open to abuse

If you're thinking to play multiplayer and she isn't able to easily play locally, then realms on iPad lets you have persistent servers (at a price) which can be really useful when playing with younger family members - we used to have a pc server for my kids

I bought this game and have no idea what I'm doing. I've never played this series before. I'm doing the tutorial and even then I'm lost or feeling overwhelmed. Going to keep at it though..

Thank you! Appreciate it, getting it for iOS for her then. I wanted to do Switch but I felt it'd be too awkward for her on that. Kids seem to be impressive on understanding iPads though.

How do you feel it handles on the iPad for a kid vs Switch? I also get the feeling that on the Switch, it has updates it needs to catch up to the iOS version??

The iOS version is a simplified version of the console version. Some things are more awkward with the simplification IMO: walking and looking around at the same time is much easier when using twin sticks in the console version.

But I'm not a kid. My kid uses both the PC, iOS and Switch version (he prefers the PC version for server-based and mod-based things, but the Switch version for the console texture packs/worlds and local multiplayer). I'm the one having issues with the controls.

The Minecraft Wiki is a good reference. It's not nowhere as good as the Terraria Wiki, but it's good enough for explain what you can do.

Impressive in survival after so few days with the game! We're still collecting ore and catching wild animals (looots of cats by now, it's meowing all over our base camp).

^ what they said - kids are much more adaptable to touch interfaces than I am, so I can't give you an unbiased answer about that.

But I think the iOS versions do support controllers so that could be an option if you find touch too tricky to get used to

You can also check the Minecraft options - there's one to allow or not allow friends of friends to join you. Unchecking it will reduce the number of unexpected joins by people you don't know.

There seem to be options for dealing with this in the menu, but I'm not sure how they work.

When loading a game, choose More Options, hit L for World Options, then there's Trust Players, which says "when disabled, players joining the game cannot build or mine until authorized." But I don't know where this "authorize" interface is located. You could also turn off Fire Spreads, TNT Explodes, Allow friends of friends, Player vs Player, etc. Or turn on Keep Inventory so if they do kill you, you keep your stuff, or Host Privileges if you want to essentially be an admin.

I'd say personally definitely the iOS version, it has infinite worlds, support for the upcoming mods, Realms as well as cross play with Windows 10 and Android. The controls are touch screen though, although another benefit of iOS is that you can use controllers like this or this if you want to. So that's even more options.

Someone in that reddit thread said they have Switch taking lots of shots bug, but they only have Mario Kart.

Is there really no auto jump feature in this version? I don't see it anywhere here. You have to take your thumb off the right stick every time you want to jump it's kinda annoying.

Man I forgot how good this game was. Survival mode is great, but creative mode is like better Legos. Played this a bunch as a teenager on the 360,so much fun with friends, wondering off and spending a couple of hours building something, then showing off our creations with each other. I feel like this game does the impossible and allows uncreative people like me to build some pretty creative things.

They're human players. The Battle Minigames can be played with complete strangers. I originally thought the ]]]]]]]] players were just a way of the game anonymizing players based on some parental control setting but it ended up being how the western release of the game interpret non-roman characters. Checked "Recently Played with" option when adding people to the friends list and saw they were all living players.

Nothing cheap about playing the game how you want and enjoying it.

Anyone else noticed the Swirch taking tons of screenshots on its own?

Had 50-ish screens of the OS menu overnight, googled and this reddit thread popped up, seems it's related to having Minecraft installed?

Such a weird bug.

https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/6b7l38/switch_taking_screen_shots_on_its_own/

Noticed the game tried taking a screenshot when the game booted up and the system notification overlay said that screenshots were not allowed.

This game keeps running when you just hit the home button, doesn't it? And maybe sometimes even if you pause?

I've noticed it a few times. Tested it just now, the sun was rising and it was raining when I hit home, waited 5 minutes, there was like one frame of night rain and then suddenly it was daytime and not raining.

I'm playing on peaceful so I don't know if this causes hunger or possibly getting killed by mobs, or if it's literally just a graphical passage of time thing.

Could it be related to playing on an online world?

I believe that's the case if you're playing online, not sure if it still happens if you play offline.

How could early reviews say this game runs at a steady 60fps? Seems crazy. I'll agree it runs at 60fps most of the time, but the game definitely dips quite a bit.
