We don’t seem to have a dedicated Mister thread, so bear with me if I use this one.
I’m having issues using the Mister Pi with a CRT TV (not a computer monitor, a regular TV). This is a European CRT, with 21-pin SCART inputs.
So far, I’d been using a cheap HDMI->SCART converter bought on
Amazon. It does the job, but of course it does not output true RGB, being a cheap DAC. Also, the output image flickers like hell. Still, it gave me the benefits of digital output, ie, using this you can change the scaling of the image at will.
Wanting a better image, I purchased this
VGA->SCART cable. Lo and behold, the output image looks fantastic, and the flicker is much, much less. But… I didn’t expect to have the scaling problems I’m having.
Two things are happening using the analog output:
1) there’s some massive overscan that cuts a non-negligible portion of the image on all sides, except the right side. This happens with all the cores I’ve tried, and there’s no in-core way to adjust the image. This effectively hinders gameplay.
2) outputting through the analog port means all the scaling options are disabled. Whatever type of scaling I choose, the image stays the same. Also, sub-240p consoles like GB and GBA output in a window, because their resolution is lower than that of home systems.
I genuinely didn’t expect this, but looking around on Reddit, I see these are common problems with using the analog video out. Problem is, there doesn’t seem to be a definitive solution, because there’s no Mister setting that can solve these issues at the source, and every CRT behaves in its own unique way.
Seeing this, I’m now wondering if going through a video chain like HDMI->VGA->SCART would allow me to keep all the perks of a digital output, and also get a good image on a CRT that doesn’t flicker like crazy. If this can be done, what adapters would be recommended?
Thanks to all the Mister owners who may be able to help me
