MK getting worse

Anyone else think that the MK fighting system has actually been getting worse since Tobias left. I dont understand why they moved to fixed combo system, slowed down the gameplay (those MK3 combos were vicious) and cut out all the jump attacks. The timing system's a bit off as well.

When Tobias was around the game was much darker, more sinister, now it looks like a cartoon.

So I think MK2 - 4 > MK:DA/Deception
 
The new MK seems to rely a lot on throws. Other than that, i think its a general improvement in the series, especially with the controls (it's finally as fluid as any Capcom fighter).

I agree that the new MKs seem a bit cartoonish. Midway needs to pull something radical in their art department to get the game to be as dark and cool like the first two (or like Killer Instinct).

1. Mortal Kombat was always a cartoon. YELLOW AND BLUE CHINESE "NINJAS" YES SO SERIOUS
2. "Fixed" combo system appeared in MK3
3. Past MK games were crap, but MKT and MK4 are by far the worst
4. MK finally got DECENT with MK Deadly Alliance and Deception
5. MK still has a long way to go before it can hang with the "big boys"

Anyway, I remember a time when MK was a dark, and grisly game considered by the media. Now, it's scariness isn't even on par with survival horror games these days. Some of the allure that drew the masses in the first place isn't there anymore (and I don't think hiring Tobias again would help either).

Exactly, the allure of the series was the extreme violence. What was considered "dark" and "evil" back then, well it's just tame.

Yea the atmosphere was like survival horror games are these days.

They've even toned down the screams
 
MKD was playtested by a chimp. Sure, every attack works, but noone has ever bothered to think about the combo engine. "Heck, break it up every time someone does the same attack three times in a row, that will take care of infinites... I'm going home."

And having up+Square with Sindel's weapon do a semi-infinite that must be "tech-rolled" (complete with no animation when going from ground impact into block stance) is just one of the broken things I found out after looking for five minutes. Sure, it will be broken if she does three of them without the opponent hitting the ground, but she can mix it up and sometimes let them bounce, etc.

Comparisons with Capcom fighters are a disgrace. Sure, Capcom puts 100 man hours into every new fighter, but at least the gameplay is actually working.
 
Mortal Kombat was always wicked cartoonish. Babality's and Friendships aren't exactly frightening, most fatalities were goofy as well. Then that little dude pops up in the corner gets his balls ripped off and screams "Toastyyyyyyyy". It wasn't exactly frightening stuff. Were you guys like 8?

MK3 combo's were pure and utter ownage. The old MK's were the last fightinggames I ever enjoyed, because they were fast.
 
I think it's just nostalgia speaking for some posters in this thread. The atmosphere in the newer games isn't markedly different from the older ones. It was always kinda goofy.

Hell they killed off Liu Kang and stuff.

Ahhh, the amount of money I spent on the various versions of MK2.

32x/SNES version being the best, well, up until now, anyway.

Maybe it's better that you can't find it. I finally sold off my Nomad earlier this year after attempting to play it again for the first time in a few years. The screen quality is HORRIBLE. :) I'll just stick to playing Genesis games emulated on my Zodiac for portable play for now. Still have the 32X MK2 myself.
 
MKDA and D's fighting engine is awful at any level other than the most basic. I don't see how anyone can call it an improvement over the previous games. Playing MKD is like playing Tekken 1. You can't even break throws. The old games are simple, but at least they were made in the early/mid 90's and are not nearly as slow, repetitive and boring as MKD. I never want to see Bo Rai Cho's throw again.

I think MK3 is really underrated, especially it's gameplay. There's more to the game's mechanics than chain combos. It's juggles are a lot better than MK II's and so is it's pace. As far as gameplay goes UMK3 is the deepest, best designed game in the series.

MKT(PSX) is also really good. A lot of the new stuff added is broken, but it's the closest you can get to arcade UMK3.


As for Tobias, I'm pretty much glad he left. The story is the best thing MK has going now and John Vogel is a much better writer than Tobias. I like Tobias' earlier character designs better than the current ones, but his later work was weak and he was in charge of MK Mythologies.



and MK II on 32X is krap.
 
I agree, the story is pretty interesting in itself... unfortunately Midway doesn't know how to present it in a good way. The Konquest mode in Deception was extremely flawed. Also, all the returning characters looked ridiculous... except possibly Ermac.

Yea MK3 is underrated while it wasnt much of a leap from MKII, the combos are much smoother and the gameplay faster.

The game was so "big" in size they had to have like half the characters locked so the download wouldn't take forver. :(

I've determined that the new MK is more fun to watch than it is to play.
