Oh the Yankees and Rays are in the AL Central now? Who gives a fuck.

Royals, Indians, Twins really stand no fucking chance. Even if Verlander dies.

Montero is catching Felix right now against the Rockies. He looks perfectly fine so far in the 2nd inning.

Felix spikes plenty of off-speed stuff. Not someone easy to catch at all.

Didn't see it till now, but Votto bout to get paid too. Glad this at least prevents the multitude of people wanting to pay him some insane amount to come play here because he's Canadian.

I'll bet all these crazy extensions all of a sudden are at least mildly affected by a "oh shit Dodgers gonna spend like crazy" mindset.

Who does ESPN have as the best NL team in their adorable rankings?

Correct answer was the DBacks, actually. The thing looks totally hijacked how they have it though. Six or seven AL teams and then like three NL (Phillies, cards) followed by another slew of AL. The NL coming for the homefield adv again boys.

The fuck did Matt Cain do to deserve so much money? Does he have the Giants management over a barrel with some sort of blackmail? I'm just baffled

dude, I've stated ad nauseum I'm not doing that shtick this year. I actually change gimmicks, unlike some tired Yankee fans.

I thought they just offered it, dunno if it's 100% official.

They are pretty close but nothings official yet. I heard something about two option years in the end too.

Cain IS NOT a top ten starter, yet $22.5M per year is considered a home town discount. It's ridiculous.
We'll get the arguments that this is what the market demands, but it's really what the big spenders have created and this "market" demands that everybody has to pay what the big spenders are willing to pay. The salary structure in baseball is so wrecked.

How many professional athletes per sport earn a salary of $20M+ per year? Baseball needs a cap, and I'm not talking about a hat.

Matt Cain's contract looks crazier and crazier to me as the day goes on. I mean, Jesus, is Cole Hamels going to get 25 or 28 mil/year?

I'm not sure why this is an example of baseball needing a cap. Nor will Votto signing his extension be an example.

It's just a joke that they felt the draft and International markets needed to be capped.

The "Best Team Ever" headline would bother me if it was a notable newspaper.

White Sox "Best Team Ever" is still worse.

Agreed.

Baseball doesn't need a cap. It should go as the market dictates. The caps on spending for younger talent is so illogical and short-sighted. It is the dumbest decision Bud Selig has ever made as commish and that is a list that is fairly long.

At least. Like we all said, he is going to get overpaid in the worst possible way by some team, and probably AJ Burnett them

More than you think. Ronaldinho's still banking $20 million/year. Fernando Alonso the driver's salary is around $32 million. And, of course, this doesn't include endorsements at all.

Owners are the one throwing around money willy nilly. Rockies only have themselves to blame for that absurd Hampton contract that is finally off MLB books now, I believe.

Bailey might need surgery? That didn't take long hahaha

The Red Sox may need a hand with their closing duties to start the season.
Andrew Bailey, Boston's anticipated closer heading into the season, may be headed for surgery, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.

Bailey, who was acquired in a Dec. 29 trade from the Oakland Athletics, recently injured his right thumb and is being told he will need surgery to repair the damage, according to major league sources.

Bailey is expected to visit Dr. Thomas Graham, a highly respected hand specialist, in Cleveland on tuesday for a second opinion on the thumb.
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine expressed his concern over the potential loss of Bailey, earlier on Monday.

"When a player is injured I always am very concerned and always try to make alternative plans." Valentine said. "When guys are hurt, they're hurt and he couldn't pitch for a couple of days, you know? I'm not sure how long."
Bailey's loss for any significant period of time would force the Red Sox to lean more heavily on another recent addition in Mark Melancon or even bullpen-staple Alfredo Aceves.

There is always the possibility that the second opinion clears Bailey from any significant surgery. But if the surgery is necessary, the Red Sox may yet again be forced to go out and find another arm to help stabalize their already questionable bullpen.

Just say no, owners, just say no. Easy to say, difficult to follow.

A smaller market getting stuck with a ridiculous contract is really what needs to be avoided. Thank you, thank you, thank you Anaheim for taking Vernon Wells. They'll forever be on the Blue Jays christmas card list.
