Its a good point. I do think Votto will perform better than expected. But, yeah, they basically gave money to the man when they didn't have to, and more often than not, that can hurt down the road.
Jimenez suspended for 5 games.

Cardinals fans trying to wrap their heads around the Reds keeping their stud first basemen while their own walked is God damned precious.

I'm unhappy Pujols decided to leave but I understand the rationale behind the Cards FO not wanting to match the Angels' offer. Enough to also understand that extending a younger, inferior version to a slightly cheaper deal TWO years before free agency is a bad risk to take. Most Cards fans were a bit wary about a longterm Pujols deal potentially hamstringing the team for years - some of us just didn't care because he's such an icon. Seeing a smaller market team assume such a large (and mostly unnecessary) risk when the Cards were averse to something similar with a more iconic player speaks volumes about the way Jocketty runs a team versus Mozeliak.Good God, teams went insane today. Votto got fucking PAID. Cardinals gotta be pissed about that.
As a lifelong Reds fan, I'm not really sure how to react to this Votto deal. I mean, on the one hand, they sent a strong message to the fans about their desire to win. On the other hand, I think they over-paid and could have waited another year or so before having to do something as he still had 2 years left before he was a free agent.
Hopefully Phillips doesn't pack it in and shit the bed by demanding a trade. I really didn't think Votto had any desire to stay in Cincy by some of the comments he made whenever he was asked about a long term deal.
I just hope this didn't break then bank that will keep us from getting and keeping anything other than rent a players.
Cards got 2 titles out of Pujols in his best years.
Votto hasn't won a damn thing. He got no hit by the Phils though.
How is Tulo a primadonna? He was simply responding to Ubaldo talking badly about the Rockies out of nowhere months after the trade.
Gah, sports threads need to be stickied again. Took a while to find this thread.
Ubaldo is a fucking cunt. Team first pal, team first.
.... we did well without Ubaldo last April.. um..
Jiminez should sue MLB. This is clearly a race driven suspension. Were Ubaldo white, say like Zito, and intentionally hit a black player, like say Prince, in Spring he would not have been suspended.
As it is, a Dominican hits a white and he is gone for 5 games. So transparent.
No Indian love in here eh?
Best shortstop in the league gets a contract extension and it's not reported on the all-mighty MLB-GAF? :O
Good to have Asdrubal Cabrera for a few more years before he's off to better lands...
There is another team in the AL Central besides the Tigers?
na Prince ate them all.
Wooowwwww.@ShiDavidi said:Cecil optioned to double-A, Carreno recalled, Laffey to Vegas
I'm mildly worried about Phillips, although I hope he's enough of a team player that he won't poison the clubhouse. I don't think he will.
Carreno gets one start, then they go to a 4-man rotation till April 21.Thank God. Cecil is terrible, and nearly all his 'cred' comes from being the Jays "winningest pitcher in 2010." I don't need to explain the idiocy of that.
BTW, I'm hoping Carreno is for the bullpen and they'll just start Villanueva until McGowan gets back/dies.
Hey now, he's accepting my trade.Dammit darkside make a decision on this trade before opening day.
So I’m watching the Yankees/Marlins game tonight and Miami is wearing their new/alternate uniforms: black top, orange hat.
Pretty awful combo there. But I’m suddenly struck with an inspiration. What would that look like if it were reversed like a photo-negative?
If that looks familiar to you, it should. We jump in the wayback machine to 1993, the Marlins’ inaugural season:
That’s right. The Marlins new uniforms are the photo-opposites of the ones they wore when they came into existence. You couldn’t do a more perfect 180-degree switch without adding in the pinstripes. I hope some guy in marketing got a nice, fat raise for clicking a button in MS Paint.

I just want a decision either way so that I can make the moves I need to before the season starts. My waivers went through today so that part is taken care of. Now I just need to know on the trade.
I rejected both of you guys.
Did accept Enron's deal though. Wasn't too happy about going into the season with Lucas Duda as my starting 1B so I dealt Braun for A-Gonz.

As long as he performs equal to his contract, he can be as fat as he wants
I'm pumped Votto got resigned, I didn't think the Reds had it in them.
Now the fans need to actually show up and use their money on the Reds instead of that shit Bungals franchise. There's really no reason why Cincy can't support 35K a game or so.
Looks like most of the money in the future will come from media rights so attendance will be less and less of a factor. Still a big chunk but not the main source.I'm pumped Votto got resigned, I didn't think the Reds had it in them.

The money? They don't.
Money is subjective. You got guys like Peter Angelos who wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire if you took a penny from him, and other owners who are more willing to take risks. Castelinni has been virtually risk free so far, and a new TV contract is coming up - with guys like Phillips and Arroyo's contracts coming up before this deal kicks in.
If the team doesn't play fast and dumb with it's money, then it will pay off. It's not going to pay off though if the management keeps giving $30 million deals to guys like Arroyo or paying $8-$10 mil constantly for a closer.
The TV deal is pedestrian though, and doesn't significantly increase revenue. It is also long term, so they have no chance of cashing in later (considering Cincinnati is technically the smallest tv market in baseball, I doubt it ever will). The TV deal is $30m for what, a decade? Chump change.
This is a big year for Cincinnati.
