Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Thread

More, if you like having a huge assortment of weapons.

Hey guys I'd like to play with y'all one day, I managed to solo all the way to HR4 but my current weapons are just too weak to repel ashen LSL. I'd appreciate it if you guys could send me a PSN invite so I can get some help after my exams :D

PSN: Zephyr_Ex
What weapon are you using? To solo HR4 Lao I had to use the Fire Dragonsword I improved to from the elder Lao. That and a full arsenal of large barrel bombs+ 2 at each area entrance. No kill but I did repel him. Just keep attacking his face and then spirit combo when you can on that mug. he should flinch 2-3 times in each area if you do it right (once when the bombs go off).

You do need them to succeed, or are they optional?
You will keep upgrading and making more. I have at least 10 hammers that cannot be upgraded any further and 10 more that I am still upgrading. Each weapon is good for certain things. In my hammers I rotate between 2-3 depending on if I want more affinity hits or more raw, or for Akantor I use my Claw of Doom. So they are optional but you will find yourself rotating between a few different ones depending on the monster you are up against.

Is the MHFU community active enough to get its own thread in ONLINE? I'd like to do some quests with fellow GAFfers (still stuck at HR4, darn ash LSL) sometime.

:o This thread is back from the dead!

Anyway, in response to the poster above, it use to have one but it dropped in popularity and is gone now. Most of the "cool kids" are playing MH3 now, anyway.

What a shame, the post before mine was only a month old by the way :D
Since I don't have
or want
a wii, I suppose I'll have to wait til MHF3 then...
Well I'm not going to push too hard, but personally I think MH is a much better experience on the big screen and there's plenty of other reasons to want a Wii. But anyway, that's just my 2 cents. I'm not trying to force you.

Well that being said, I'll probably be heading back into MHFU myself again soon. Whilst I've put it down for a while to focus on Tri, there are still monsters in FU I want to fight (namely Fatalis and Akantor). Maybe if I can be bothered reinstalling Windows on my MacBook, I can help you on Ad-hoc party (Though I'd need to reach HR4 myself first). Ash Loa-Shun is pretty easy, I can repel myself in the Nekoht quest (and he's got the same HP even in single player).

Is there a thread for that one also? If so I can not dig it up
The servers aren't online are they? if you're talking about the PS2 game, that is.

Funny you say that as I too think I'm getting ready to go back to FU. Though this is probably mainly because of my lifestyle and I can't afford to sink hours into the console version. Now MH on the go? ...well I easily put 150+ hours into it that way

I also prefer the BC-esque art design of it over Tri's tropical influenced one

I haven't stopped playing MHFU due to no Wii. Two of my friends and I play MHFU every friday night through ad-hoc party. So for me its still very much alive and kicking. We actually just took down Ukanlos about two weeks ago. SO much fun.

Since this game is now only 10€ on the PSN Store, I'm thinking of buying it.

Is it still worth it? I mean, Monster Hunter 3rd is coming and this one as been on the street for 1 year. Still have people playing it?

Also, is this THE online RPG for the PSP? Phantasy Star Portable kinda sucks right?

It is the MH game to have for sure. There is so much content, you will always have something to do. If you have a PS3, download Adhoc party, and you can team up with people remotely. I still find people online. I usually pre plan my adhocs with people I know, but I am always looking to play with others. Im in Japan so time difference may be off, but you can pm me if you want some help ranking up.
MHp3 wont be out in Japan until the end of this year so it probably wont be out in NA/EU regions for a while.
Get this game you wont regret it!

All quests for download have been released. The last one was the HR9 Akantor quest. Good thing is you can still get them, but you can only hold 6 at a time.

I'm currently doing all tutorials, is there any not worth going trough?

Learned a lot, that's for sure

You don't need to do all the weapon tutorials, only the ones you're interested in. Once you know about item usage, the basics of combat movement and weapon usage, you should be ready to start hunting.

I'd avoid the Greatsword and Hammer, till you're more comfortable with timing and learning the windows of opportunity for attacks. Longsword, Sword & Shield are usually the weapons most beginner's opt for. (Suffice to say, all weapons are fair game, there is no "noob" weapon)

Yeah, using the Sword + Shield combo. A Kirk to be more precise, still have the beggining one lol

I always did prefer faster and less damaging than slow and damage frenzy

My weapon of choice is the hammer. All the power of the greatsword (if not more) and you can run with it unsheathed/charging. Only downside is you cannot block with it so you have to think fast to dodge. After doing the weapons training go and do the training on each monster. Its the best way to get used to a monster with a different weapon, and there are unlockables for completing the battle training.

I hope in the next iteration, they add a screenshot mode at least for the final moment of the battle, You get some really good compositions sometimes.

I know what you mean. I have had some recently where they just look so awesome finishing up a monster with wyvern fire.

Hey, so this is quite possibly a stupid question but can't you leave the town without going on a quest? Just to farm for materials? I've tried exiting via the path down by the gathering Hall and through the main entrance to the town, both simply have invisible walls with no button prompt asking if I want to leave the village.

I'm trying to get back into Monster Hunter, both Freedom unite and Tri, but am essentially starting from scratch in both.

In freedom unite you can't leave unless your doing a quest and gathering materials is counted as a quest (special quest that allows you to get stuff as much as your pickaxe/fishing bait/bugnets allows).

The only "exceptions" are going to the farm and the training school (though they are technically in the village).

Boo-urns. Oh well, I'll just have to adapt to farming stuff mid-quest. Is the ability to explore outside the village something new in Tri or specific to the console iterations of MH?

You can still do specific gathering its just that you have to chose it from the Village Chief/Guild hall ladies like other quests. Its also labeled and color coded (Green text) as well

You can also stop either by time up or giving a ticket that will end the quest (check the quest objective to see the conditions), which is provided in your supply box. Just make sure you stock up on your gathering equipment to get the most out of it.

In the early levels there aren't any true monsters to distract you but as you go progress they will start having monsters who are also in the area doing their own thing (ignore/run away/kill if you wish).

as for the second question i'm not sure since i only played Freedom Unite.

I'm also new to MH and am kind of side-by-siding both Tri and Unite.
So far, it seems that Tri is more open and less... segmented than Unite. They actually compliment each other well. Tri is more suited for longer, less compartmentalized sessions. Unite is more suited to shorter bursts, but can obviously be extended by stringing together quests.

Good times either way, IMHO!

I'm finding Freedom Unite to be a lot harder than Tri. There are either a lot of low level monsters in a given area or a relatively powerful monster with a few low levels. Gather twenty mountain herbs but watch out for the giant boar thing that will rape and kill in a few hits.

All I want is some materials to make some better weapons and armor and every quest simply destroys me.

Tip: Do the village chief quests first as they are easier versions that will help you learn the game /get back into the groove, when you feel you have enough you can try the Guild ones.

The Guild hall stuff is mainly for group quests so its harder (can be done solo but a good amount of experience will help).

The reason i type this is because it sounds like your doing the Guild stuff and getting owned.

I made Light bowguns and Bows specifically for this bastard and his Green incarnation. :(

Wow haven't seen this thread bumped in ages. Anyway, Just took down a Nekoht Kirin yesterday, which made me happy. Though then again, I did cheat (sleep bombing). Currently working on Silver Rathalos, though he's kind of boring to fight next to Tri's Rathalos.

At least you can play, my PSP analog stick is basically fucked so no MH progress for me.

its not fun hammering on the dual Tigrex quest with a messed up stick :(

Damn that sucks man. You should send you're system in to Sony for repair.

I'm starting to miss the game, I haven't played it for months after spending 400 hours on it. I was practicing my agro lancing, which is sooooo fun against the giant enemy crabs.

Once MHF3 comes, I'm gonna manlance the whole game. I'm willing to wait for the US release, I just hope they'd sell some premium edition or something. I love me some swag.

Getting a PSP by late november and i plan to get it with this game (when does 3rd come out?).

Played Tri and really loved it, so im ready to go crazy with the whole series.

One question though, to get ad-hoc party online going, do i NEED a ps3 or is there some way to do it through my PC ? gonna install CFW as well, dont know if it changes anything.

There's that too. The fatter grips will be perfect for extended use of the claw.

I hope they release that as a bundle in North America with Tri Portable. I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I don't even care if they make it as Monster Hunter specific as the Japanese one with all of the added graphics on the case, I just need that new concave nub, the grips and the battery with the longer life.

December 1st for Japanese release of 3rd. Not sure about ad-hoc party.

I was getting royally owned by the Guild quests, the Chief's quests are definitely more my speed, thank you.

Been playing Freedom Unite using a pair of Sennheisers, the sound quality of the game is amazing. There's so much detail that just doesn't come through the PSP's speakers. From the booming footsteps of the Popo to the sound of the wind howling as you enter the cave leading up into the mountains. It's really impressive.

I'm not 100% positive, but I'm pretty sure Ad-hoc Party is only on PS3, and will allow you to play with other Ad-hoc Party users. For PC you can use Xlink (with a compatible wifi adapter) and play only against other Xlink users. I'm also pretty sure the two services aren't cross-compatible.

You need a PS3 with wired internet. That is the only requirement, other than downloading the client. You will problaby need the Japanese version too as the servers aren't worldwide. World J was where the English players are.

Sweet. Just took down my first Gold Rathian and got both a ruby and a brainstem from it. That's my second Rathian ruby from my second high rank Rathian. So good.

Just played through some 1 and 2 star guild quests with a friend at work during lunch, I was mainly a milling pylon in those encounters, distracting the smaller things while my buddy basically one hit the bosses. Good times, netted me a bunch of materials which I can hopefully put towards some better weapons and armor.

Right, xlink kai and adhoc party aren't cross-compatible.

As mentioned by kassatsu, adhoc party is region specific, so you need to download the version that your friends will be using. You could download the version for all three regions.

The ps3 has to either be running wired, or you could still (probably) wire the ps3 to some sort of ethernet wireless adapter- the point is that the ps3's built-in wireless has to be dedicated to talking to the psp.

Xlink kai is a lot of trouble to get working, but it comes down to this: If the thought of finding a wifi dongle that works with xlink kai and then spending possibly an entire night to make it work doesn't scare you away, kai's an okay option. Kai frequently crashed my computer- I used a dell work laptop and it would blue screen at least once per session (a few hours long). It was a lot more stable on a mac laptop running win xp under boot camp, but it would still blue screen about once a week. This was probably a driver issue with the wifi dongle.

I also had to forward a bunch of ports. The wifi dongle also gets pretty hot after an hour or two, so you might want to watch out for that as well. I'm not trying to scare you away from using xlink kai, but I think it will probably help a little bit to know what you might be getting yourself into.

Bought my first PSP (PSP Vibrant blue 3006) just for this game last week, and have been playing it pretty consistently. Put it about 35 hours already, which isn't a lot of time for MH, but good enough for me to get a good feel of the current lands I've unlocked and monsters I've been fighting.

Tri was my first MH, so I came into this with high expectations, and I haven't been let down yet. I mean, so far, it seems a hell of a lot easier than Tri. Monster HP seems a lot lower, and I can speed through new monster missions within 5 minutes pretty easy without much difficulty. But, I'm gonna guess thats because of the sheer amount more of Monsters there are compared to Tri, so the difficulty is something that can be heightened more slowly compared to Tris.

Anyway, I'm heading back to kick some more Plesioth ass (I hate him.)

Took on the online Tigerex by myself, insane. Took me awhile to not get my ass kicked, especially when he nearly kills me one hit.

Love this game. So fucking much.

what's the new linkplay thing on the japanese PSN? Is it like the vocaloid thing that you can play the game on TV at a higher rez?
Don't think that would be possible without a patch or something.

Just be aware of the hip check (i didn't play MH Tri, so I don't know), plessy has a large hit box than to volganus/lavasioth.
