Monster Hunter Freedom Unite Thread

As in it comes out of the water more? I have noticed that in the elder quests aside from the frequent slither move it actually is out of the water more then in the high or g rank quests. I'll still take LBGs to a plessy fight, it's in my DNA now.

No im talking his fucked up hipcheck hitbox :(

And actually its more 50/50 with the water now since you can actually fight him in it.

Ahh yeah thats one more reason to take an LBG with rapid thunder to fight Plessy. Hate that monster. If given the choice I'd rather solo G-rank Rajang then G-rank Plessy.

for me that was THE reason. Well the good thing is that i started to rock the bow now.

and i shudder at the fact of fighting a G-rank Plessy

LS is the fastest Kirin killer but it's rather cheap if you can consistently hit his horn since you can lock him in a loop.

Tried killing that thing with a Hammer but it didn't go as well. I guess i have more lessons to learn

I was using dual swords for a while and I thought I really liked them until I went back to using my gunlance. I just like that damn gunlance so much. I realize I'll need different weapons for different scenarios but it's my favorite so far.

If you are good at the bow or have a g-rank LBG with rapid thunder you can solo G-rank Plessy easy. Just watch out for the slither.

LS is very fun for Kirin, but personally I like to jump-slash at his head with the SnS and just go to town on the horn and SnS doesn't bounce as much.

Bought this to play on my Vita. Think I've bitten off more than I can chew though but we'll see how I go. Never seen nor played a Monster Hunter game before but figured since it was cheap I would give it a shot just incase a Vita version is announced. ;)

It's a lot to take in. Here's a wiki I've been using to answer random questions that I come across.

Why didn't anyone tell me this game was pretty similar to Demon Souls/Dark Souls? I would have boughten a PSP so much sooner.

Man...this game brings back memories! One of my most memorable battle was solo-ing Dual Lavasioth with Bow. Had to re-do it countless times....and managed to complete it with less than 10 seconds on the clock!

p/s I really hate that timer shit.

Wolf Akela is right similar in punishment for being greedy, but in my many runs of DS I didn't have to know bosses as much as I did/do for MH. It was easy to become overpowered on DS late in the game (gear and levels) but you will still be punished in g-rank gear on Ukanlos. BUT if the comparison to DS is what gets you to play this great game then who cares, enjoy it. The more people playing and picking htis up on PSN the better I say.

I usually roll with a Great Sword, Hammer, or Longsword. I decided to switch up and use a Gun Lance for a change. Oh man is it ever satisfying to shoot some wyvern fire all over a Tigrex's face.

Finally got the stupid HR1 Goldenfish quest out of the way. I only brought 4 goldenfish baits with me for some reason, so when I reeled one in too soon I got worried. But after running in and out of the zone probably 20+ times (and having to force the "boss" to spawn in another zone once) I finally got it done.

There is a guild quest where you need 8. One of the last ones I do.

Yeah I saw someone else mention that. I do not look forward to it nor do I expect to even try. If you haven't done it, then not doing it is good enough for me lol

Just started playing, downloaded it for the vita on recommendation from the PS VITA JRPG thread.

HOOOOOooooookeeeddd..

It's like playing my Beastmaster on FFXI only without the charming ability (which would be great, a solo (co op) beastmaster game, anyway.

I really like the Long Horn, love that little jig dance he does LOL, I don't care if it slows me down, I love pushing forward while the beat plays.

But its not a great weap for soloing from what I understand, so I look forward to being the bard in party mode so I can pull it out.

Is my best choice the long sword for soloing?

In most rpg's, mmo's especially I normally go with these weapons in this order of choice:
Scythe
Great Sword
Sword & Shield

Also are there any PDF guides out there I can load on my iphone for reference on the go?

Long Sword is good, but I prefer the Great Sword over everything else for soloing. Once you master that weapon you'll feel pretty much unstoppable.

Still, try out all of the different weapons. As others have stated in this thread, some monsters are easier with certain weapons. They're all fun in their own way and have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Because of the claw hand. If I had to platinum Demon's Souls using claw hand, I'd end up with a broken controller and arthritis.

You never had to use "the claw" to play effectively. I have never used it, on my psp-1000, PSPGo, and now on my Vita.

The Monster Hunter wikia is one of the best places.

Personally I use Hammers and Gunlances mainly. I love bashing a rathalos' head and stunning it.

There's a several Longswords in the game that are actually scythes in looks. You can get them early ish.

The sole listed Walkthrough/FAQ on GameFAQs is good enough. The Weapon Guide pretty much does all the min/maxing for you, though it might ruin the enjoyment a bit. The weapon path images there would prolly be better.

Personally, if you use a device with a good browser, RotR's data section is the best resource for equipment. It has an equipment calculator so you can plan your equipment sets and it even lists all materials plus where to get them and the odds of getting them. Spent so much time playing around with this.

As for choice of soloing, anything really. Hunting Horns just aren't the fastest killers mainly because of you spending time triggering songs. They buffed it significantly in MHP3 though.

Thanks..

Reminds me, I wish PSN had an email account companion linked to your psn name.

PSNNAME@PSN.COM

I could email myself these links and view them on my ps3/vita that way.

the claw is definitely a preference (i like it due to free reign of the camera).

@ Bold: the main reason i started to learn using a hammer (plus it adds to weapon variety).

LOL I had to look up what the "Claw" method everyone was talking about was.

No need on the vita, you can set the right analog stick to work as the dpad.

The claw is definitely a preference, I tried it once and hated it (on my PSP-1000). I think in my experience not using the claw made me more aware of where the monster was on the field at all times. With that being said using the r-stick as the d-pad on my Vita is so nice I don't know if I could go back from it.

That's true. I personally found claw style to be more precise than recentering the camera with L, and it was absolutely indispensible when fighting multiple things on the same map.

You know I don't recenter much. I think since I have played the game som much that I know where and when I am safe and stop running and move the camera. In a hectic fight I still move the camera instead of recentering and I don't have any problems. Thats one thing I love about this game, there is no wrong way to play it/work the camera.

I hardly recenter since its back to what you are seeing and i want to see what the monster is doing at all times. Alos agree with the multiple things as well (since i can use it to escape those 2 Tigrex)

Sometimes it's just fun to take a full load of flash bombs, shock traps, mats to make more of both, the Deep DarkHammer, an armor set that boosts Reckless Abandon and plow through Gold Ian and Silver Los. Unless you are farming for heavenly scales... then its a chore.

Bought this off PSN to give it a shot (my first MH game) on my Vita, and I just completed all the help/tutorial levels and it's really nice. Only issue I'm having is that I wish it had a lock-on, and the right stick is a bit touchy so that when I'm swinging the camera it often registers up/down messing up my view. Can't say enough how good PSP games look on the Vita.

Oh boy...

Lol I have not played MH yet, but that seems to be a topic of debate for the games...is it important to the experience that they do not feature a lock on system? I'm curious to try them out, but i've heard the MH can be hard to get into, and sadly the demo does not work on Vita so i've been hesitant.

I'm just scratching the surface of this game at ~60+ hours into the game, but IMO the lack of lock-on is a good thing. I really don't mind now that I can play on my Vita, especially. I have gotten way too hooked to this game lately. I started using a long sword and haven't looked back. I just keep crafting different ones with different elemental properties.

I'm so much better with LS than I ever was with a gunlance. I'll probably get more into hammers soon too.

Lock-on would hamper the experience of the game. There are times where you want to target a specific part of the monster and lock-on would really get in the way of that as there are so many parts that are weak to certain attacks or able to be cut off.

Edit:
Good to see you back Grinchy!

Ahh I see, So would Freedom Unite be a good jumping point for the series then? Alot of the stuff I've read make it hard to take the plunge with not know what i'm getting myself into, but the MH games have always interested me.

Do the MH games feature character creators, and more importatly does it run well on the Vita? I did see a strange video where a guy was fighting some monster, and then pulled out a giant roasting spit with food on it while the monster was just walking around, seemed kind of crazy, but cool none the less.

Freedom Unite is the best MH game outside of Japan. It has the most monsters in it as well. So I'd say it is a great jumping off point.

You start off by creating your hunter at new game. There is no story outside of go and do the quest. It runs fantastic on the Vita. I played MHFU on my old PSP-1000 and my GO so I am used to having to use the d-pad for controlling the camera (non-claw) and so the ability to map the camera to the r-stick is a great reason to play the game on the Vita, that and the colors... oh god the colors are beautiful.

Lock ons don't mean you couldnt switch which area of the enemy you're striking. Other games have done it. I'm enjoying the game, but I'm fighting the camera as much as I'm fighting enemies, which isn't very fun.

The game runs and looks great on the Vita. I do not miss my PSP at all.
