I only regularly use /co/ these days, and that board's been going to shit for a while now. I wonder if this'll have much of an effect on the day-to-day there yet.

8chan was founded a while ago by a guy who thought 4chan was too strict about child pornography, basically.

Last year, amidst all the GamerGate flurry, lots of 4channers left to 8chan. Soon after, a large wave of liberals left to form their own counterpart to /pol/ on 8chan.
What?! Wouldn't the FBI crack down with the quickness?

>tfw moot left 4chan before you

He already betrayed his vision of what 4chan is when he started censoring shit last year, so he might as well leave.

Lol gamergate discussion was wrecking the community, and it was probably causing legal worries. Of course he told them to fuck off and the fact that you have a problem with it is concerning.

Strange since I always though of 4chan as the Wild Wild west of the Internet. GAF allowed it and this site is tightly moderated. But I guess if people were doxxing others then it makes sense.

GAF allowed it, but it wasn't used as a staging ground like on 4chan. That's the difference.

It would have been glorious.

Found it!

shut: How many sites are even 10 years old? They're usually very large and-

moot: Facebook isn't even 10 years old. But they're a public company so they can't just crash and burn. Well, they can crash and burn, but Mark [Zuckerburg] just can't hit a button like I can.

Like, it is kinda a fantasy of mine to shut 4chan down. Just think about what would happen. People complain all the time about - unfortunately they complain about /b/ like 'Why don't you remove /b/?!' You're a moron! Why would you remove /b/?! It's a containment board or a retard bin, as we've called it, no offense to actual retards because these people, you know, do them a disservice.

But it allows them a place to congregate without affecting the rest of the site and in that sense 4chan is like a - I was gonna with something more offensive - an asylum on the Internet. And so if 4chan were to cease to exist this would be like Arkham Asylum, like, the gates are open. And we've all seen Batman, but there's no Batman in this story, because it's real life, so they would just rape and pillage. And it would be horrible on one hand, but it would be fascinating. The anthropologist in me is like 'omg this would create so much data'. It would be really spectacular to see people trample the internet in search of a new home.

Yeah, I think if I ever decide to ragequit life, I think that's one of my last orders of business, is to shut down 4chan, because it would truly be a gift to the rest of the internet to see you all go out and just pollinate the rest of the web.

I've never perused 4chan, and while I am aware that most of the boards are fairly innocuous, /b/ certainly is not, and I agree with moot's assessment that it is a kind of containment center.
I don't think the effect of such people spreading out to the wider internet would be positive. Sites like NeoGAF that have a large barrier to entry and a good mod staff will probably be safe, but other sites? I'm worried.

He doesn't give a shit anymore. He broke /pol/ for months, hired incompetent mods, and had to deal with constant cuck threads being made about him and his gf/ex-gf.

Still sad though. I'll wish him luck in whatever failed startup he's looking to lead next.

The main reason I think he's quitting is that it's hard work running a site like 4-Chan when you reach your 90s. It's time to retire with a Brandy and a wank.

What happened on Tumblr?

Tumblr tried to raid /b/. I dunno what they tried to raid with, I think it was spamming 'You shouldn't do this, be nicer' or something. And a bunch of Tumblr people did it. So 4chan retaliated wtih animal gore. Thousands of thousands of pictures of animal gore.

That's what I mean tho. V = video games. So what are all those other subs, which are supposedly the 'worst ever'.

/a/- Anime & Manga (and hentai)
/sp/- Sports (and meltdowns)
/mu/- Music (and shit taste in music)
/pol/- Politically Incorrect (utter shit, never go there)
/jp/- "Japan" (actually Touhou, and shut-in lifestyle)
/b/- Never EVER go there
/v/- Video games (and complaining about non-video game threads, no fun allowed, no actually discussing video games, and the bane of all good in gaming, waifu threads)

man... I've been off of 4chan for a long time, just the mention of moot's name brings back some memories. but yeah, wish him the best of luck in whatever he decided to do next, maybe I'll even go for a visit at 4chan for old time's sake (not /b/ thou, that's just condensed insanity).

btw, someone mentioned Something Awful, what happened to them? I'm way behind on these news...

It's crazy to think I've been browsing the site almost as long as he's been running it.

Fuck, I started going to 4chan when I was starting high school. Now I'm in postgraduate from university.
