LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Even though its reviews were almost universally middling-to-negative, the preview of "American Dad" drew more than 15 million viewers to FOX on Sunday (Feb. 6) night. That successful performance has prompted FOX to juggle its future Sunday line-up, which may mean bad things for Emmy-winning comedy "Arrested Development."
"American Dad," the new animated comedy from "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, will still have its real premiere on Sunday, May 1. FOX has, however, moved the show up an hour from 9:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ET. "American Dad" will now officially launch between the 350th episode of "The Simpsons" and the fourth season premiere of "Family Guy."
The series, which will air encores as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block, focuses on mid-level CIA agent Stan Smith, his wife, his two kids, his alien and his fish with the brain of a German guy.
FOX also announced that the schedule will allow the first three episodes of "American Dad" to air after new episodes of "The Simpsons."
As a result of the shift, "Arrested Development" will now have to end its second season by late April. According to The Hollywood Reporter, FOX is expected to reduce its order for "Arrested Development," though specifics haven't been announced. Despite endless critical acclaim and awards attention, "Development" is averaging only 6.06 million viewers per week this season in the Sunday 8:30 p.m. time slot.

Those 15Million were probably to drunk to change the channel after the superbowl. Then again it did have America in the name. :lol

Lets be honest here...everytime I've watched Arrested Development, the bliss was always intermingled with the inevitibility of its cancellation. As such, I'm not totally devestated by this news. Still; FUCK.

American Dad was pretty awful. Arrested Development kicks ass.

I hope reducing the order doesn't screw with things the writers already have planned. It doesn't even make sense to me. Sunday's 8-10pm lineup has two Simpsons (one rerun), Arrested Development and Family Guy. American Dad can replace one of The Simpsons, what the hell does Arrested Development have to do with this? They can't take a slight hit in ratings for the last three weeks of Arrested Development's second season?

It really pisses me off that my two favorite shows on television now, Carnivale and Arrested Development, have lackluster audiences and that consequently the shows could get screwed in the long run.

FOX sucks.

Hopefully some other network will jump on Arrested Development and give it the support it needs.

It's FOX we're talking about here, they would cancel all news programs on their network if they could.....Then replace them with "My Big Fat Obnoxious Rapist"....

I love "Arrested Development," but I sense a lot of potential in "American Dad" (I still can't get over that Bush/God/Cheney joke. :lol).

At least we're getting something out of this deal instead of being left empty-handed.

I never thought I would hate Seth Macfarlane for something, but if his shitty show cans Arrested Development, I will kill him. And why couldn't Fox have put their 5 emmy award winning show after the super bowl, along with American Dad, rather than the Simpsons? Fucking Murdoch and his right wing nazi regime.

Dude, it was not that fucking funny. And we totally are losing something here. American Dad has "potential" which could and probably does mean fuck all, and Arrested Development is not only great but wholly unique. We already have fucking Family Guy. We don't need its ugly stepson.

The Bush/God/Cheney joke might have been funny if it weren't so old. I've seen the same concept done on other shows, like SNL. That about summed up the whole show for me. Lots of old hackneyed jokes about the government and the right-wing.

Speaking of which, Jason Bateman hosts SNL this Saturday. Maybe, just maybe, one person will watch and then check out Arrested Development.

Yeah I know because it's not as though every comedian starting with John Stewart, at least once a week for the last four years, hasn't made the joke about Cheney being the real power in the administration. Real cutting edge stuff.

Let me put it a different way:

"Arrested Development" is being replaced by "American Dad."

Apparently you people dont understand ratings. If one show does better, it gets a better slot and lasts long. Simple enough, huh?

Arrested development isn't funny at all. It's one of those shows that a small group says is funny but everyone else knows it isn't.... like FAMILY GUY. I really thought American Dad was entertaining which is a surprise because FAMILY GUY is lame.

No good! For once Fox did the right thing and promoted the hell out of AD. Despite their efforts the ratings are still unimpressive, so once again Fox's impatience rears its ugly head and AD is one step closer to being buried next to Andy Richter Controls the Universe, another brilliant show that Fox killed off early.

So, no commercials for the show during the Superbowl is promoting the hell out of it?

And you don't seem to see the fact that the execs decide who gets the good timeslots. Ratings didn't determine the fact that Simpson's and American Dad followed the Super Bowl. Fox exec's did. Last year, I believe, ABC followed the Super Bowl with Alias, because they wanted one of their better shows to get more exposure. They even wrote the episode in a way to draw in new viewers, by creating a point in which the could jump on board.

The simpsons is the best show on fox?
Apparently it did get the most coveted spot in television for the year. I guess Fox could never be wrong.

They promoted the hell out of it before, but I guess by then they decided that AD wouldn't benefit from much more, hence this announcement coming shortly after the Superbowl. Come on, Fox was hyping the hell out of AD, creating websites for the characters and the shows inside jokes. There were numerous commercials about it being called the best comedy on tv, etc etc. Yes, it was heavily promoted.

I always wondered who the biggest retard on this forum was. That mystery has just been solved.

If FOX cancels Arrested Development I am taking hostages.

I liked American Dad, but the one thing I can bitch about it that one of their jokes was directly ripped from Family Guy. When the alien says "Sorry I can't be anorexic like the aliens in the James Cameron movie", is exactly the same joke as Stewey's "sorry I'm not like those anorexic babies in the diaper commercials".

What a load of bullshit. You have a critically acclaimed, award-winning, cult hit show, and you don't support it at all. Minimal (and often uninspiring) advertising, inconsistent scheduling, and the post-Superbowl snub.

Futurama, Firefly, Wonderfalls, and now Arrested Development. Fox can fucking eat me.

I was a never a huge fan of Family Guy, but now it and MacFarlane get the boycot.

Damn you are dumb. Do you know why their bringing back Family Guy:

http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2003-11-18-family-guy_x.htm
A DVD set of the show's first 28 episodes released in April has sold nearly 1 million copies, making it this year's top-selling TV show and the No. 4 television title ever, according to Video Store magazine. A second collection, of 22 episodes, has sold 520,000 copies. And the series is Cartoon Network's most popular among adults.

And that's just sales up to Nov 2003, when the article was posted. Family Guy is extremely popular.

Almost ironic, isn't it? Family Guy, a show that a lot of people liked, got poorly advertised and shifted around in the schedule and was cancelled. However, it gets popular enough to create a bastard of a show that is American Dad which in turn does the exact same thing to another beloved show. Well, maybe not ironic, but terrible. We have to boycott Fox.

Seinfeld stank up the ratings for a few years too. They need to give it at least another 2 years. Not that FOX would understand this, they will just cancel AD and just replace it with some gay reality show. :(

And if it can't get ratings after 3-4 years, then this country is just too fucking stupid to enjoy a show of AD's caliber.

You know, I was watching my Wonderfalls DVD wondering why a genuinely great show has yet to be cancelled this year on Fox. I mean, we're already a full month into the year. Good to know those worthless fucks haven't lost it.

By the way, both American Dad and Family Guy will be cancelled before the end of the summer also. There's no way that enough people watch it to justify keeping the shows on a broadcast network, not with a summer premiere. Then there's the fact that it will essentially be an hour straight of the same show, which will wear thin pretty fast.

Surely this is the evil revenge of FOX, for being put in the position of backtracking over FG. They are dividing their mortal enemies (people who like good television) so that they may conquer us with reality TV while we bicker amongst ourselves. Truly

I really liked the American Dad pilot, and I think it'll be a great show.

But compromising Arrested Development to get it in? What the fuck? There are seven fucking days in a week, Fox, and most of them are filled with drek.

We're talking about Fox here. They are the biggest fuck ups when it comes scheduling. So many good programs have met their doom because they can't seem to grasp that idea.

I can't believe someone equated Arrested Development to Undergrads.... the mind boggles.

Anyhow, Fox screwing quality shows with die-hard followers* is nothing new. Futurama was just really getting strong when it was axed. If there's any good news, it's that they haven't canned Arrested Development yet, they've just sentenced it to timeslot juggling. Maybe it will find a solid foothold somewhere.

*I don't consider myself a die-hard AD follower, though I do enjoy the show when I catch it.
