And even i am moderately surprised
http://www.playstation.jp/news/2005/pr_051021_psp.html

19.6 million game software units shifted (until end of sept)
15 million UMD movies shipped
197 games released
10 million PSPs shipped
-- Japan/asia - 3 miilion units
-- America 4.47 million units
-- euro+Oz 2.53 million units

Let battle commence!
"SIR, we fight with CANNON! only girls fight with swords these days...."

They're shipping a bit too much for their sales aren't they?

The interest in the UMD format is truly baffling to me. Surely the majority of these titles are collecting dust on store shelves?

Together with the 2.5 million PsP in the US only.

Now we know why Sony wants to sell 2.5-3 million PSP's by the end of the year, they want to clear store shelves of their current stock. :lol

but - with the Gigapack coming ... who is going to buy the the first pack (if there is to be no price cutting)?

I can just see the whole conversation between Sony and Stores right now:

Sony: Our PSP is selling great isn't it?
Store: Well to tell you the truth, we still have a shitload left in our store
Sony: Hmm.... sounds like a problem. Hey we got a great idea!
Store: Are you actually gonna drop the price, or sell the PSP by itself?
Sony: EVEN BETTER! We're going to make a new bundle and raise the price!
Store: :|

I believe the new term for the value pack is PSP Retard Pack©. :D

yup - they aren't CY 2005 projections.
Yeah, i just saw this:

<PSP®ハードウェア仕向地別生産出荷累計台数>(2005年10月21日現在)
日本(アジア含む*) 300 万台 (発売日 2004年12月12日)
北米 447 万台 (発売日 2005年3月24日)
欧州(PAL地域) 253 万台 (発売日 2005年9月1日)
全世界合計 1,000 万台

How many units did the sell in September in the US then? :lol

Evidently it sold 2.58 million units in September!! (4.47mil - 1.88 mil NPD august numbers)
PSP IS UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!

....
Yes I know the whole deal with shipped and sold numbers. It's still funny though.

Sony can ship also more than 10 millions PSP, but if they cannot sold them, it's absurde.

Sony has sold only 5 millions PSP worldwide: so they have the double in magazine's stocks.

Remember the officials numbers:

PSP: 1.9 millions in Japan
2.0 millions in USA
1.0 million in PAL (Europe+Australia+.....)

Total: 4.9 millions sold worldwide

Nintendo DS: 3.4 millions Japon
2.2 millions USA
1.5-2.0 (?) millions in PAL (Europe+Australia+.....)

Total: 7.1-7-6 millions sold worldwide

Source: Media Create (Japan)
NPD (USA)
Nintendo & Sony (PAL Territories)

Wait, only TWO games sold per PSP?!

Isn't that more or less in line with the typically low tie ratio for handhelds though? I remember GBA always having significantly lower tie ratio than consoles for example. Don't know about DS though.

Sony's getting worried suddenly. Putting out all these bullshit figures! Reeks of damage control. :lol

No the real damage control is actually happening in both of these threads...

I dunno... claiming to have moved about double what the market actually wanted smells a bit fishy, no matter how you spin it. Had Xbox or GameCube ever "shipped" roughly double what was actually sold, Microsoft or Nintendo would get crucified for it.

What's fishy is that each friggin 4th quarter for the last few years Sony ups the shipments of their consoles in preparation for the fall sales and each 4th quarter we have to deal with the why is Sony shipping so many consoles posts.

I mean damn we already know that Sony often counts shipped as sold.... yet everytime they issue a goddamn press release about it here we go again everybody acts like it's some friggin new conspiracy.

It's not a new conspiracy, it's the same old conspiracy being rehashed again and again. You people are 'tards... really.

EDIT:

I just took a look at the press release... this isn't even one of Sony's crazy PR's claiming to have sold... it plainly says shipped... so what's the f*ckin problem?

These weren't impressive enough.

The 10 million PSP's which are shipped are now a problem for retailers though. Sony probably already got their money from those.

There was a similar disparity last March though, PSP having only sold through roughly 50% of Sony's shipment figures. This seems to be something of a trend for Sony, maybe due to their different definition of shipped? Nintendo and Microsoft never report shipped figures that are more than 20-30% over sold through...

No shit. This isn't the first, 2nd, or even 3rd time they've done this... they seemingly tend to do it at least twice a year in what they seem to think are leading up to high shopping periods.

In the short term, yes. In the long term though, if Sony can't move units, orders will dry up, they'll have to stop production and lose more resources/market in the process. Sony's GameCube strikes yet again. :P

Er... the "high shopping period" in the spring? No shit?

The period around Easter in the US seems to rapidly be becoming Xmas 2... I have no idea why..... it use to just be that Easter was about shopping for candy, clothes and flowers... even those sales have increased, but not it also seems to be a Xmas-lite period where people purchase presents.... I have no idea what the rationale behind that is...

Easter? Uh huh, I think I get it now. ;)

Wow the PSP trolling is at peak levels now. The press release plainly says shipped.

Oh Jarrod, Easter is a big holiday in the U.S. in case you hadn't noticed. ;)

Fantastic.

PSP is like gold dust here, everyone wants one but nobody can find it. The deamnd for this thing is huge

Probably because of this game

For those of you feeling optimistic about the PSP, remember:

It's a failure if--

It doesn't outsell a cheaper, weaker game system aimed at a younger market
It doesn't sell through over 10 M units in its first year, even at a premium price
It gets any ports whatsoever
Those ports sell well
It does't have graphics equal to the current generation's consoles
It doesn't dominate in Japan

So wipe htat smile off your face! Playing those games is just distracting you from the reality of the situation! Didn't you hear me?

so WTF is going on here? they've only sold through 50% of their stock. does this mean their released numbers the other day is the sell through of remaining stock? does it mean they are planning on shipping additional?

Sony = baffling

AND WHERE ARE THE SEPTEMBER NUMBERS!!

The Atari Lynx and NEC TurboExpress hit every single one of those bullet points. Were those successes also? :P

Even Japan's PSP sales weren't really that much better when Pro Evo 5 came on stage :\

I don't know if it will boost sales in Europe.
Maybe not. I know that PES5 is popular in Japan, but I dont think its as popualr as it is in Europe. I know that in the UK this is THE game that everyone buys. Im sure it will move PSP's, but not enough to meet Sony's expectation.

Unbelievable. Where are all the extra units then? I went to a couple of stores over here(MediaMarkt in Amsterdam) and I couldn't find a single PSP.

You make my implied point for me!

I'll have to add that to the list
"Has anything in common with the Lynx and TurboExpress"
