I think labeling SSBM a fighter is too limited personally given how it has outsold every fighter ever created quite handily. Fighters just don't sell that much even when they contain icon characters ie. Marvel vs. Capcom, Fighters Megamix & Sonic 3D Fighter. It is much closer to the Beat-em-up genre with all the weapons platforming and simple combat but it still does fall into the fighter category given the genres broken down and most basic definition.
