I think labeling SSBM a fighter is too limited personally given how it has outsold every fighter ever created quite handily. Fighters just don't sell that much even when they contain icon characters ie. Marvel vs. Capcom, Fighters Megamix & Sonic 3D Fighter. It is much closer to the Beat-em-up genre with all the weapons platforming and simple combat but it still does fall into the fighter category given the genres broken down and most basic definition.

Its the 11th highest selling game in Japan for the Cube with Pikmin being the 9th highest. Pikmin has sold over 1.1 million copies in just Japan + USA while Pikmin 2 has sold over 700,000 copies already in Japan + USA and it hasn't even been out for a year yet.
