More Europeans die from the heat each year than Americans die from guns

That bad thing about heat too is if your area is the hot humid kinds of heat.

I remember going to Vegas for the first time and supposedly it was 35C. But since it was a dry heat, it wasnt bad at all. But if anyone lives in a humid heat, even if it's only 25C outside, it'll feel very different. You cant even equate it to a higher temp level because it's a heavy damp heat which makes you sweat in minutes.

News channels here will try to equate it like..... "30C (but feels like 35C with humidity)"

That is totally false, because 30C with high humidity feels much worse than Vegas at dry 35C.

Last week had high heat and humidity down where live (SE US) and going outside was like walking into an oven full of steam. The high humidity just makes everything cling to you and it's dreadful.

This little heat wave of 30+ was annoying but I never felt dehydrated or suffocating. I suppose if you are too infirm to get fluids and out of the sun it might cause issues.

Is there a difference between how the WHO and CDC is determining what a heat related death is and how they are counting?
I know Europeans don't believe in AC for some reason, but the difference in those numbers seems too drastic.
CDC number is only direct deaths, WHO figure is both direct death and indirect deaths (e.g. cardiovascular strain, which could mean someone having a heart attack on a hot day). Estimates for the USA on the latter go over 10k (maybe even higher). CDC is only for the USA, WHO is for 53 countries across both Europe and Asia totalling 930 million people.

More people are dying from heat related deaths here due to a mix of climate, infrastructure, and demographic factors. It's a complex issue and there isn't an easy fix.

For example, Europe is heating at about twice the global average, particularly in southern and central regions. 2022 and 2023 saw record-breaking heatwaves (some over 45C). The heat spikes we're seeing in June used to come much later in July or August. In June in used to be a cooler.

We also have one of the oldest populations in the world. It's these Old timers who are more vulnerable to heat stroke, dehydration, and cardiac stress in hot weather.

Would more access to AC help? Maybe, but there are serious trade offs. You could build a negative feedback loop where more AC use means more fossil fuel use, causing more warming and then more need for AC. Not to mention the cost. Many people wouldn't be able to afford it.

so what is the reason Europeans just don't grab a window unit or get a split unit installed?
Window units are bulky and the people dying are the elderly who can't install one nor plan to have one until it's too late. Most people seem to prefer wheeling out a portable unit and sticking the exhaust out the window. We don't really have a huge AC market in the UK or mainland Europe and our windows are all different.

Absolute madness. Whats this commie bullshit? Let people install ACs in their house ffs.

Nobody is stopping them.

Its generally not a problem to get it installed, unless you live in a historically important building, or your landlord is prick. There are tighter regulations regarding noise and public facing extraction units, but it is not banned anywhere as far as I know. 41% of houses on sale in Spain last year had an AC installed. The bigger problem is that the housing was designed for an era when it simply didn't spike nearly as high in terms of temperatures.

Those numbers look suspiciously like the fudged numbers to make Covid look more deadly. I smell bullshit.

Seems right to me, i hate the heat more than any other weather, i would rarther have a blizzard, to be fair we don't get the same heat up here in the north of England as even the south where i'm from, last Saturday i had my big water air con fan on and didn't move from the room all day, i'm all over lily white with no tan and that's the way it's staying lol.

Nice of the Euros to take one for the team by living like a 3rd world peasant so we in the US can burn fossil fuels 24/7. Although to be fair our gun deaths would dwarf the Euro heat deaths if we were all miserable from lack of air conditioning.

Window air conditioning units, the cheap, convenient, effective cooling solution in response to a heat wave, are effectively banned in Europe due to EU regulations on energy efficiency and noise (and having anything stick out of your window, and probably several other regulations I'm not aware of). Portable hose-exhaust type AC units are sold in stores, passing regulation for some reason, despite being almost useless. The typical recommended solution is a split duct wall-mounted AC, which is not a viable solution for renters lacking AC.

This seems...unreasonable.

1. A/C is not needed because for vast majority in Europe you don't need them for a long time - even with crazy heat we are talking about 2-3 weeks a year tops.
2. Portable A/C machines are not useless, I have one, works great. You just need to buy one for 500€ and not 50€.
3. A/C solutions are not banned, no problem installing them in many places - however yes, in some others there are various laws against them e.g. in Paris the main concern is architectural integrity, A/C units on the facade really make that Haussmannian building ugly

As a Scandinavian I would never live in South Europe without AC. I visited Sicily some years ago when it was +30°C and nearly melted. And a few weeks before it had been +40°C. I have no idea how people down there live without one. It'd be as stupid as living without heating during wintertime up here.

Ok, now I see why Euros whinge so much about the hot.

Air conditioning isn't common where I live in the US. But we also rarely see temperatures above 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

I still own a couple of portable window units that I can set up if it starts getting too hot.

we don't have your weird windows. we have this, and often larger

my windows are basically like doors. try to fit a AC unit in it.
also if you're renting your landlord will most likely tell you to fuck off.
and then we have insane energy prices because we're trying to save the climate... or something like that.

Would you all quit with this bullshit excuse please? Even if it's just 2-3 weeks a year aren't you going to use it the next year and the year after that and the year after and the year after that till you die?

All these hot ass countries need solar panels. Here in Holland we got too much of them lol

Im curious what the power bills are like in Europe, I always hear they are insane, but I have no context for what insane is to them.

Like we have a pretty high power bill here in Dallas, at about $350 a month, but the majority of that is our pool using a lot of energy for the pool pump + my wife wants the house at 67 degrees year round. But if it wasn't for those things, energy really isn't that expensive. Like I 3D print, have two 5090 gaming rigs running 24/7 plus alot of other electronics, and they barely make a dent on the power bill if they are on or off.

Edit: just did a bit of research, looks like on average most places in western Europe are 2 to 2.5x's more expensive (35 cents-ish vs 15 centish) than energy than the US (minus places like California/Hawaii), but some places in Europe are very cheap for energy (basically the eastern countries it looks like), with the middle countries hitting more like the US average. Very interesting!

Pretty sure if a President in the U.S. tried to ban A/C you would see Civil War.

You guys must have really good weather 90% of the time to not give much of a fuck about this.

150,000 dead every year from heat? What? You don't have malls or shops to chill in with A/C running? Just sacrifice the old and vulnerable to save the planet right?

Absolute badass Americans surviving 100 degree temps when thousands of Europeams die when it gets past 40 degrees. Europe in shambles, USA! uSA! 🇺🇸

As pointed out this thread repeatedly, nobody has banned AC and the reported WHO figure includes vast parts of Asia totalling 930 million people. It also lumps indirect heat deaths in the figure as well.

It said Window A/C's are banned which is normally the #1 A/C used by people on limited income living in cheap areas. You can get one for $200 in the U.S. and it will cool a room no problem.

Instead the solution is? If most landlord or older buildings refuse to install A/C since they are allowed to be greedy cunts.

So just let the poor die from heat?

Window ACs are not banned. I can buy one off Amazon right now. The problem is finding a unit that actually fits most of the window types here. A window AC unit will not fit any place in my house for example. The most popular types are split or portable AC units for that reason. The former has some regulation around facing public property (facing the side or back of your house is fine) and needing to not be loud (which most modern units having no problems with), and the latter you can buy anywhere.

We can have them but don't bother. If it is hot it is only for a few days, I have an effective portable unit I used for the kids nursery but it ain't worth the hassle of setting up for adults when it can be Dune outside now but bucket it down an hour later.

If we did require them the electric is so fucking expensive it would almost be cheaper to spend the day shopping in a/c shops / pubs.

Plus heat isn't such a burden when you are not obese....

USA keep your guns and your A/C. Not against guns but who wants any of the fucks they meet in daily life having one?

It's not a bs excuse, it's just impractical nothing more to it; also due to how houses are built, it's not really all that hot inside, the scorching is outside.
It is bs. Would you not use the Air conditioner unit year after year for 10-20 years. Are you going to throw it out at the end of summer?

I thought I was dying yesterday at 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit).
I worked out on a farm in that heat in college. It sucked I lived, I had lots of water. Many days we would end our day floating in the pond named Ol' Blue.

Europeans probably won't know how much a 4000 square foot mansion with private pool, $10000 jet engine gaming PC, and central heating-cooling running 24/7/365 to optimal comfort levels costs in energy bills per month…

Do you live in an area of dry heat or humid heat? 33C dry isnt too bad at all. But if it's heavy humidity, 33C is pure death.
It's been around 60-70% during the day, and 80-90% during the night. No air con, feels like death. I've struggled to sleep some nights.

I grew up on a 400 acre farm and my wife on an 80 acre farm in southern Indiana that we both helped our parents work

People complaining about heat should be in the top of a bran putting up hay on 100 degree days

And yeah same here spent a lot of time in the back waters of the Ohio River cooling off

We are like brothers, except I am old and fat and you are a professional athlete. Brothers like in the movie Twins. I am the Danny Devito though.

Americans enjoying Air Condition and large gas stations.

We always stop at Buc-ees when we drive our Lightning truck on trips as they have such reliable charging stations and massive bathrooms though I hate actually going into those WalMart sized gas stations :)

I am getting old as well at 58 and the mid section is a constant fight for me as well

Buc-ees are pretty cool. And the Brisket is good. They are clean, and the drink selection is top notch. I saw they have made it to VA now, and Soon Bucees will conquer the north.

Look at what AC brings you dirty Europeans.

Some things that help in big heat if you got no air con:

- Buy bedding that runs cool. I forget what mine are. Some Calvin Klein smooth and slippery cotton set, so it runs abnormally cooler than a cotton set that warms up. You want to avoid those cheap cotton sets like I bought when I first lived on my own.... that cotton material set which feels like youre lying on sweatpants. That material gets hot

- Get one of these. Got one at work USB plug in power into your laptop. $10

15719467.png

- Buy one of those big tower floor fans for your bedroom. You can get one from Walmart or Costco for probably $40. Numerous settings and it can be set to auto-turning
