More Evidence: Nin Revolution "Different"

Sorry if old...

GD: Lastly, what are some of the changes that gamers will see over the next couple of years with the launches of new consoles from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo?

JR: Expect a ton of graphics of high quality. I don't see any revolutions in game design on the XBOX2 and PS3, but we'll see something interesting on the Nintendo Revolution and the Nintendo DS is already doing some cool stuff with the dual screens. I truly respect Nintendo's forward thinking.

This is from an interview with John Romero (creator of Doom, currently working at Midway).

Full Interview

I'm almost worried to see what Nintendo has in store for us, but as long as it includes an online Smash Brothers I'm down! :D

In an alternate universe Romero would be working for Nintendo.

He demoed Commander Keen for them in the mid 80's and reportedly Nintendo were very impressed, but nothing ever came to pass.

Interesting. I quite enjoyed the old Commander Keen and Duke Nukem games. Too bad the farthest they ever got beyond computers was the Game Boy Color many years later.

So the big secret is that the Revolution will come with a drinking-straw attachment on the controller? I know I can't "suck it down" from a sippy-cup attachment.

No, It will come with a John Romero signed Daikatana poster.

OMG, Daikatana 2, Revolution Launch Exclusive! Someone email spong.

I can see the ad now...

"John Romero is about to make you his bitch.... again"

then mario comes in

"suck it down"

On a more serious note, John Romero is probably the first person I have seen (from interviews and stuff) praising Nintendo for thinking forward. (with the Revolution)

On a Romero / Caramack note there is really good book that involves them called Dungeons and Dreamers. It has a lot to do with how D&D has influenced modern gaming, particularly Doom and MMO's.

Does Nintendo want his praise?

Not to try to defend Daikatana in any meaningful way, but it really wasn't all Romero's fault that it sucked. The levels that were so badly designed Uwe Boll wouldn't even turn them into a movie, were designed by Killcreek and not Romero.

And Killcreek was hired because of her wonderful talents, yeah right :lol Romero was also the lead designer and had a major role in all things involved, let's not forget about that.

Still, I forgive him. He has got so much shit all these years, I am pretty sure he has learned a lot since then.

Now we just need to get him back to that Moscow bar and get him hammered with vodka, so he can spill the beans just like he spilled them a year ago having seen the Ngage Qd prototype (which he inaccurately called "Ngage 2").

If he really did see the Rebolution it makes me worried about his comments since he likes the DS. I don't think the DS is a revolution and if Nintendo’s next console is on the same level of innovation I'll be disappointed.

I mean I'm a Nintendo fan and the DS has some cool games but really the touch screen isn't a huge jump in game interference. I tried it a few times and didn't even like the controls. It's just a different method but not a superior one. I could see liking it for a few games but that's it.

I have a feeling Nintendo does have a few cool ideas up its sleeve but none of them really are a ‘revolution’ in gaming and many people will feel let down because of the hype (paradigm shift and all that).

Well, he didn't call DS a revolution. I also sincerely doubt that he knows much about Revolution. Of course, Nintendo may be bringing back the Dream Team!

Well if that patent about 'fixation points' has anything to do with revolution, paradigm shift could prove to be a strangely suitable phrase. Almost like a play on the word...

paradigm:

A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline.

Then again, I think the original statement was in Japanese so 'paradigm' was the translator's choice for the closest english word.

Two tiny adjustments..

.. and *poof* we have GAF

Good to read. I've never really been a fan of his run and gun games, but I did used to like the old days of iD and apogee software. Was this the guy who said video games are like porno? Meaning the story is superfluous to the good stuff? I agreed with that too.

I hope we are nearing the end of being graphic fetishists. I still want incrementally better visuals each generation... but I don't want that to be where the emphasis is. I want new and exciting games too.

Peter Molyneux also praised Nintendo a while back. He wasn't talking about Revolution, but was talking about Nintendo's philosophy of making games more simple. He said he agreed that games could be simple and still have incredible depth and be fun. I think he also said his head nearly exploded when he saw Wario Ware or something.

If that is the case in this universe he should have beef with them.
Somehow he still seems love them.
Maybe he just truly is a fan of foward thinking as am I.

Interesting piece of news. Locki If this is true I'm impressed.
Are you an encyclopedia of the who's who in the gaming industry?
If so drop some more gems on us.

On a side note Commander Keen wasn's half bad

For some reason, everytime I hear that the Nintendo Revolution is going to be "different," I get a mental image of a garden gnome-sized plastic statue of Mario with four controller ports that dispenses Pez when you push down on the head.

Sadly, I think I'd probably buy that. :lol

Romero tried to get my ex-girlfriend back to his hotel room at E3. The fucker. I think I can say that without libeling him. I don't think I could say that he gave her extacy too. Which of course, he didn't...
