GAF Madden 2006 Season 1 NFC Champ
Well with all the recent talk of Xbox Next and PS3 supporting better HD standards I found these 2 articles interesting.

Basically it seems that JVC and Samsung are working on a Slim CRT HDTV set. This is great for people like myself that don't like the Rear Projection, DLP, and Plasma sets. I consider Direct View sets to offer the best picture quality but the the negetive with those sets are the size and weight of them. Hopefully if these new Slim CRT sets do well, we could see the return of a 40 inch Direct view set like the old 40 inch XBR Sony use to make.

Well the normal ones max out at 36" and they are much more prone to problems as well. LCD and plasma tech is really good now. In places like the UK there is little reason not to go for them since hardly any CRT's even have component outputs.

Yeah 36" is the normal for 4:3 and 34" for 16:9 but I believe that is because the weight of the sets. If these new slim CRT are not as bulky maybe they could go bigger.

The avsforums don't seem to think so. The general opinion is by reducing the space that the gun has to work in, you're introducing even more limitiations with regards to size.

At least that's the take I got from the couple threads I read.

The LCD HDTV's are sexy. Samsung has a really slick one over at Best Buy; the price tag isn't so slick though... Boy could I use 6 grand!

They also state that these new "skinny" CRTs will cost about 30% more than regular CRTs, meaning that nobody will give a fuck except super hardcore videophiles for about six months until something better comes along. Sure it's the best technology in terms of picture quality, but a 32 inch set weighs about 180 pounds (unless it's a Sony, in which case add 20 pounds) and they are really annoying in a gaming setup where you have to induce a hernia every time you want to witch out a component-cable device...

That's f*cking awesome! I hate all non-CRT displays outside of DLPs at this point. The only problems I had with CRTs were the size and possibility of minor distortion. This sounds like they have addressed my first complaint. Now, I wonder about the second...

The DLP's IMO have the best picture at this moment in time. Unless you're talking about a high end plasma that is $20k+, they're the best for the money specially as HD is concerned.

I have both a DPL and CRT HDTVs and after spending some time with them I find I prefer the CRT for when I am fairly close to the screen. But when I am on the couch playing DPL is inbeatable. Great picture, solid blacks, and no burn-in ever.

Plus the price is dirt cheap.

I saw this last week and thought that it looked interesting, but I had never considered the lack of space for the gun to project an image. I can see how that could limit the size of these slimmer CRT HDTV's.

CRT models probably do have the best overall picture quality, and certainly the best bang for your buck at the moment. Rear Projection looks good, but not great, and of course DLP and Plasma look awesome but cost tons. On top of that, I've read reports that say that we don't know yet how a DLP or Plasma TV is going to look over the life of the TV. There is some speculation that over time the colors could washout or have other issues that we don't know about yet. It would suck to have your $5000 system look like crap in 5 years time.

On a side note, a local guy here in my city is trying to sue a local TV station. Apparently he had just purchased a new Plasma HDTV and during the early burn in phase he must have left it on their channel for a REALLY LONG time. He now has the channel's logo and a bar along the bottom of his screen where winter weather/school closing information was broadcast, burned into his screen. :lol The dude must be an idiot to have left his TV on that long on one station, especially during that crucial burn in phase. Serves him right!

TV stations are idiots. This problem has existed for more than ten years and they still leave their stupid burn-in, distracting, bullshit station idents in the corner. The guy might have fallen asleep, his cat sat on the remote, whatever. The simple solution is for TV stations to either quit doing it or do soemthing creative, like color cycling, moving, morphing or animating the ident.

Remember, these are the same idiot fucking stations who still have time to mosaic non-sponsored corporate logos on rapper's hats, for example.
