bish get on aim i need you <3
I don't think it will have a significant impact long-term. They'll get it back on the shelves just in time for the holidays, and it'll sell like hotcakes. It boils down to, "Will the increase in sales because of this press make up for the time it's off the shelves?" I think it will.sonycowboy said:It's going to KILL the Xbox & PC version sales. Resumed sales in ~3 months will not make up for losing a good part of the second months availability and all of it's 3rd.
At least they got these versions out for a month though. They could have been in much deeper doo-doo if the ESRB had been able to do this in early June.
sonycowboy said:Also, I have to wonder what the European regulation group will think of all of this. It's obviously in that version as well and that could be another big dollar amount of returns.

Property of Microsoft said:It's Rockstar's own fucking fault by A) leaving in the code, B) thinking modders are not good enough to find the code, C) lying about how the code was either left in on purpose or by accident, D) being immature fuckwads who think their games are somehow bringing in a "mature" element to videogames by ripping off every rated R movie on the fucking market; if this is "mature" gaming then they can keep it E) pushing us back to the days of Mortal Kombat and Night Trap hearings, thanks alot F) making buggy ass games in the first place G) just being pompous bastards. They deserve whatever they get and I hope they get shutdown. Asshats.
heidern said:Well I dunno about the rest of Europe, but it makes no difference in the UK whatsoever. San Andreas is already rated by the BBFC(British Board of Film Classification). An 18 rating is:
the film or game is only suitable for adults (persons aged 18 or over). It has an adult theme and contains strong scenes of sex or violence that could be quite graphic. It may also contain some very explicit language. It is an offence for a shop to supply an 18-rated video, DVD or game to anyone below the age of 18.
Personally, I have to say the ESRB is a load of bollocks. The violence in GTA including killing cops and normal people going about their business surely deserves the highest adults only rating. It seems to me, the ESRB is just a convenient shield for publishers who can sell unsuitable content to kids. I'd like to know, exactly what kind of violent content does it take to get an AO rating?
Soul4ger said:So their not telling the ESRB that the content was on the disc, DENYING they had anything to do with it, trying to blame "hackers" for making it, then having to rescind those comments, all the while casting the entire industry into a bad light, is just hate? Give me a break. I used to crusade against politicians and angry mothers, too, saying that we should have the right to play what we want and curse them for censoring us. Blah, blah, blah. This is pure irresponsibility on Rockstar's part, and the company knows it. And you know it as well. Whether they had hackers release the codes or patches, or whether they didn't, the developers still knew full well that content was on the disc, and that there are people who search for those things.
They've completely undermined the ESRB ratings system, which for years people have been championing. "IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE RATING, DON'T BUY IT FOR YOUR KIDS." But if even the ratings don't have full knowledge of the content, how can you say that anymore? This is a complete joke.

What are the other Xbox GTA sales to date by month? It'll be interesting to see the comparison 6 months from now.
123rl said:I've had this argument a dozen times on more forums than I can remember, so I won't go through it again. All I'll say is that I disagree with the content of the GTA games and, IMO, their content is done for shock value...and probably to hide the fact that the games have very little real depth. If you think that's wrong then whatever...that's your choice and I don't want to argue about it. FWIW I'm completely against censorship and I don't think we should have to accept censored games. But that doesn't mean that I find the violence in GTA acceptable...it feels like a cheap fix of violence that's unjustified and pure "Look how violent this is! Isn't it cool!" shock-factor. Maybe I shouldn't bother replying and just call people whiny bitches like a mod has just done.
123rl said:Yes, the open is design is fun...it's one of the few things that I like about the game. Being able to choose which series of missions you do lets you customise the way you play...BUT it means that the story in the game is usually disjointed. I'd prefer to have one progression of missions instead of several. It would really help their storytelling (their weakest element, IMO). It's just a different type of game to what I prefer...I like games where the emphasis is on learning gaming skills
123rl said:The GTA games are horribly buggy though. I don't know how anyone can argue that these kinds of flaws are acceptable...being too ambitious is no excuse for allowing game-ruining glitches and bugs. Not to mention the horrible draw distance, pop-up and far too basic textures and everything else that doesn't fall under those categories

sonycowboy said:The other GTA double pack was released during the holidays.
People always say "wait for the holiday". It never helps releases this far away from the holidays. See Fable, KOTOR, Splinter Cell: PT, & Ninja Gaiden.
GTA:SA will get NO pick up for the holidays at all on Xbox. With the 360 coming out, a ton of PS2 games, some big gamecube games, a wealth of DS games, a few well placed PSP games, it will not be able to rise back up.
There appear to be only 2 more even possible Million sellers for the Xbox. Madden and Half-Life 2.
I'd say Madden was for sure given that it has NO competition from NFL 2k and is in it's second year of Live, but with the 360 release around the corner, I'm not at all sure Xbox fans won't hold off for the 360 version.
For Half-Life 2, you've again got the issue of a long delayed port (of an excellent game), which while it will be great, it will have a very big uphill climb to get anywhere near a million sales.

Hell, Fry's carries porn, so I don't see them taking this off the shelves.
909er said:Regarding KOTOR, it's a game that started out a like 300,000 and now stands at 1.1 million. I recall it selling pretty good last holiday too.

Mr_Furious said:None of this bullshit would be an issue if the fucking ESRB would adopt the MPAA's rating system. That way there'd be no confusion and the content in question could be directly compared to that of a movie counterpart, for the game's defense. This whole thing is beyond retarded as far as I'm concerned.

My buddy from college (a dentist and sinlge) is looking for fun this weekend... I liked to get laid in real-life when I was single... but anyways... is is only on PC?

Lazy8s said:Issues like censorship and American society's puritanical aversion to sex over violence effect the world in far more influential ways than the shelf fate of some videogame. Debating them exclusively from that standpoint shows a serious lack of worldly perspective.
The matter in this case comes down to Rockstar damaging the freedom of the industry to self-regulate its content by deceiving the review panel into verifying the appropriateness of explicit material to a demographic that includes minors.
