Finally, it wouldn't be an Itagaki interview without comments on other developers. Rather than speaking about specific developers, Itagaki states that the entire Japanese game development community seems to be unhealthy based on their showing at E3. He asks, "At a time when such an awesome machine is appearing, why aren't you trying harder? Aren't you the software makers that represent Japan?".

Itagaki seems to be drumming up 360 support as he adds, "I was hoping to see what kind of beautiful scenes you could make for the world's most powerful game machine, but there was absolutely nothing. There are probably some developers who read this and say 'What's this fool talking about?'. In that case, you should bring forward something more exceptional than what I've made."
Moving on to the three new characters featured in the game, Itagaki first talks about the character that he refers to as "the mysterious masked wrestler." There are two things that we apparently should have picked up from the trailer: one, this girl is Tina's friend, and two, she's not a standard professional wrestler. Her fighting style is based on Mexico's Lucha Libre style of wrestling (also featured in games such as King of Fighters, whose Ramon makes use of the style). Team Ninja made use of pro wrestlers to create the girl's motions.

A second new character, Kokoro-chan, whom Itagaki confirms as being Japanese, makes use of the Hakkyokuken fighting style. This is a style associated with Virtua Fighter, which Itagaki mentions as being the origin of 3D fighters. Team Ninja is apparently working hard to top Virtua Fighter's presentation of the style, which Itagaki praises as being "cool."

On the note of characters, Itagaki reveals that the "main" character for DOA4 is Helena. In fact, she wasn't shown in the first trailer because Team Ninja wants to give her a debut worthy of her new status. Going along with Helena's new central role, the DOATEC storyline will serve as the center of DOA4's story, with Itagaki pointing out that the Tri Tower DOATEC base has been created (and shown in real time in the trailer) for DOA4.

In all, Team Ninja is aiming to have more than 20 characters in DOA4. The characters will all have interconnecting storylines.

I enjoy the man's interviews as much as the next, but he's clearly delusional. DOA4 is nothing exceptional to look at. Judging by its current form, we'll see better looking Japanese games on PS3 and X360 quite soon, if we haven't already.

Can you give us some more detailed impressions since you obviously have the final version in your Xbox 360 at home?

Does he have a final X360 at home with final versions of the "other" Japanese games he's talking smack about?

He was making comments based on E3 showings, apparently, so I think it's fair to respond in kind and look at his own E3 showing.

Dead or Alive 4 is, according to Itagaki, 15% complete. While he won't give a specific launch date for the game, he does mention that there's very little development time left. Perhaps the second Xbox console will debut in Japan just like the first one, with a DOA game.

Only 15% complete? That can't be right.

If ths bold pontification had come from anyone other than the man that brought s the spectacular Ninja Gaiden last year, I would have wrote it off. But he's really setting himself up for the killing blow. His next-gen stuff had better be phenominal of he will be the laughing stock of the industry. I don' exepct much from DOA4 other than minor graphic upgrades and some enhancements to the fighting system. Same goes with the DOAXV sequel. But anything else had bettwer blow peoples socks off or he's in serious trouble. I can only dream what he could do with a Ninja Gaiden 2 on next gen hardware.

I hear him barking...but let's see what he and Team Ninja gives us in the months to come. His record ain't to shabby, and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt...for now.

:lol This coming from the retard behind a 360 game that looks like a souped up xbox port.

he's off his fucking rocker

^this looks like a high res current gen game^

and we've seen more impressive stuff on the same Alpha 360 hardware

It's funny, because that's one of the better DOA4 shots released.

He's lucky Ninja Gaiden was good, otherwise he would've been laughed outta town long ago.

He has a poin though. Show me another game developer running their own proprietary game engine with graphical fedelity equal to or greater then DOA4.

Show you another? Ok, how about Epic and Gears Of War?

Fyi, you're likely to be hit with a ton of other examples from other posters, so that's why I only listed one.

Itagaki is soooo funny. And he makes Sonybots cry, which is just a bonus.

He makes sonybots laugh more than anything else. The man is dillusional and the fact that he always has to make retarded comments to defend the garbage that is the DOA series just goes to prove it. Ahh, give me some Tekken love namcoooo :)

I think Itagaki is really hurting his image as a developer with his latest interviews.
I've always thought he was crazy and arrogant but also capable of speaking very directly about the industry, his work and his opinions.
Instead recently he seems to scream "Look at me",he's spreading all kind of bullshit (the X360 devkits crashed because he pushes the hardware so much, Doa4 at 15% and still coming out in 5 months, the non answers he gives when he's asked with tough questions etc) to look cool.

Yeah and the fact that DOAU super bombed also makes that clearer. DOA can only sell on a console launch when there is nothing better available.

serioiusly, go hug your xbox and get over DOA4's artstyle.

Please. If I just made one of the best action games of all time i'd feel as though I can say whatever the fuck I want too.

IMO, the problem is that he set the bar too high on his Xbox games. For instance, DOAU looks fantastic, some of the hi-res textures are head and shoulders above anything else out there. The style of the characters isn't really ultra-realism, you can't give Kasumi blemishes and skin imperfections, it wouldn't look right. Outside of the bump in polygons, the biggest improvements I can see to add aren't going to come through in screenshots, it's more on the gameplay and animation end.

I say that if next gen games only have, on average, the graphical polish of a current-gen Team Ninja game, that's still a huge improvement on the current standard.

It baffles me that anyone can say DOA4 looks bad.

Were you guys expecting holographic titties or something?

LMAO!!

Yo forget this is GAF, where nothing is ever good enough!! The government could scavenge Area 51 for Alien technology and create the MarsStationX and people would bitch about Martian 'jaggies' and how that title doesn't look like an extraterrestial game. You could NEVER please the peanut gallery of this forum. Let them eat cake. ;) :lol
