Game director Sebastian Kalemba and executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga did an interview with Polish site GRY Online and they talked about tightening up gameplay of Witcher 4, and explore quality improvement of monsters in the game.

Full interview in Polish

Following is the google translation of parts of the interview.

MM: Was there anything that, with hindsight, seemed to you to be a weaker element in, for example, The Witcher 3 , and you wanted to tighten it up?

Sebastian Kalemba: Definitely. We definitely want to tighten up the gameplay and the experience of hunting monsters. That's one of the reasons why the bauk mentioned by Gosia was such an important part of the trailer. It's not just that we wanted to show a new creature that inhabits a nightmarish forest, we also wanted to show the organic nature, the fear that these monsters bring. To show that this is a real problem in this world and that defeating this monster, shortening the distance during the hunt every time is key. This fight, choreography and feeling, this experience of what it is to hunt a monster, was very important to us in the trailer and it was no coincidence that we wanted to present it this way. In this world, we play a professional witcher who hunts monsters and this is the center of her profession. We wanted this monster and this fight to have an emotional charge, but also potentially convey the feeling of gameplay that we want to achieve in the future.

MM: How much of The Witcher 3 will we find in The Witcher 4 ?

Małgorzata Mitręga: We will definitely find witchers here [laughter], because the whole profession, the whole world exists. It's still dark and difficult. We want to present new areas, like the village of Burzyny, located quite far to the north, which you saw in the trailer; you will get there in the game. What is definitely common between The Witcher 3 and 4 - both games live with stories; this has always been the case with The Witcher and all our games. You can definitely expect more of that, we want to explore even more colorful characters with whom you can emotionally bond, return to them and experience adventures with them.

Sebastian Kalemba: As Gosia says, the framework of the world is 100% established. It will be slightly redefined only and exclusively because we are making a plot strongly driven by characters. We are now getting to know her from Ciri's perspective, so we want to experience this world a little differently, in her way. And she will also become a witcher, which is already visible in the trailer. We really wanted to include in this material a pill of what the world carries within itself, that it is quite dark. At the same time, we wanted to show that the consequences of our actions can be different, there are also those that bring some hope. One hundred percent players who have completed the trilogy, especially the third one, will find nuances and references in The Witcher 4. However, this does not change the fact that the new game will be a great time to start an adventure with The Witcher , because it is essentially an origin story. We get Ciri, whose entire character arc is written out for the entire trilogy.

Małgorzata Mitręga: And most importantly, there will be monsters [laughter]. This is something that, in terms of quality, we want to explore more. Monsters are part of the storytelling, so they will be connected to the regions, to the stories told, so that it is all coherent and interesting. Besides, even this bauk [from the trailer – editor's note] is more than just an ordinary monster; it has its own psychological note when it tempts Ciri.

Focus on monsters is great as I loved the monster stories in Velen and other regions in TW3.

Can't wait to see the improvements in combat and hopefully from making Cyberpunk they have some good learnings.

Honestly, after a few upgrades, i really got to liking the combat which i hated at first. I just wish that the magic abilities were a bit more potent and useful.

As for them saying that the trailer was shot to show off these new mechanics, well fuck you. Show the gameplay if you want to show off the combat. So dumb to do pre-rendered trailers in 2024. Especially for a game 4 years in development.

The combat can be fun, especially after the next-gen patch overhaul.

But didn't they just go into full production this year? I don't think they would make the mistake they did with Witcher 3 and show a super polished vertical slice that doesn't scale to the full game. This trailer was a good way to convey intent and goals, but also keep expectations in check.

Having said that, I feel like they should have just released the trailer and gone back to making the game, instead of this seemingly endless press cycle. It feels like damage control to change the conversation away from the negative reception to Ciri.

Should of released the trailer like 3 months before release. As far as I know the game is gonna be 2-3 years away until release. Seems like they are not learning from the mistakes that were made with Cyberpunk 2077.

Witcher signs are meant to be weak and simple. They are often mocked by actual magic users. However, the trailer shows Ciri drawing power from water, so I’m assuming she will be able to use more powerful magic.

Also, officially they started pre-production on W4 sometime in the first half of 2022 according to their investors call. They did some work before that, but it was limited to research only. So, with less than three years of pre-production, it’s no surprise they haven’t shown any gameplay yet.

I always imagine the people who complain about the combat are the ones that just hammered the sword attack button lol. The combat on harder difficulties is actually really deep and fun where you have to spec properly, get good gear before certain enemies and use the abilities you’ve specialised in and tonics to have success.

Okay, so it is finally out in the open. Now they can fix it. See Witcher 3 defenders, it isn't so bad now that we know Witcher 4 will have much better combat.

To be fair, many of yall played with mods or higher difficulties so you never saw the single button spam most of us used to get thru almost the entire game.

The default difficulty mode should have been the easy mode in Witcher 3, and that would have probably helped. Any game that can 1 button spam on default difficulty....it's a shame that the rest of the game is so good but the normal combat meta was so shallow and instinctual.

Like they built good combat somewhere in there but most would never see it, because why would they if you can just hammer one button. It's also not like Dark Souls where there is consequences for not hammering the button correctly. Messing up in Witcher 3 combat was consequence-less on normal.

The werewolf by the tree fight was really the ONLY time in the game where I thought, hey, combat may be getting better, then it just stayed bad after that.

Yeah, it took me so long to get into TW3 because the controls sucked even after they added alt mode. Just felt like I was yelling commands over a phone to Geralt who got to them when he wanted to, which made combat more of a chore than fun. Hope this combines great story telling and world building with actually great combat this time.

The thing I enjoy the most about Witcher games is the tactical element before you go into a fight.

You start with your research. What kind of monster will I be facing? You prepare yourself. Wait until the right time of day. Drink a specific potion. And so on.

In Witcher 3, these elements were requirements to progress in questlines. I disliked that a lot. The tactical elements felt on rails which takes away a lot of the tension and makes the game world less menacing since you can't fail.

While Witcher 3 is without a doubt the best game in the series, Witcher 1 game world was way more threatening. It's hard to describe. Everything felt more dangerous. Running around in W1 chapter 1 at night with the demon dogs and the shrines and everything, man that really felt scary to me.

With every new Witcher game the series became less menacing. W3 was more like a fairy tale and W1 more like a horror game in direct comparison. W2 is in the middle.
