Absolutely. These cuts are due to budget rebalancing for the current production slate. As each project concludes and its contribution to the overall business is tallied underperformers will be cut and teams/studios merged.

Saw someone on plebbit yesterday in a UK finance sub saying he's a game dev in the UK who's been made aware that there will be redundancy's at his unnamed company.

Reading between the lines I just assumed an Xbox studio so assuming there's some redundancy packages being worked out in the UK studios.

On ResetEra, insider SneakerSO shared more information and insight on these recent Xbox layoffs. According to him, budgets for projects are severely cut, while the same quality as pre-layoffs is expected.

What??????

XBOX 360 was profitale because of exclusives btw not fukin gamepass.

Yeah. 360 had a wicked cocktail of great first party games, great 3rd party titles, a deeeecent launch lineup, pack-in mics (at launch) and emphasis on XBL. Oh and the MUTHAFUCKING BLADESSSS.

Me and my friends all getting 360s at launch will always be a great memory.

I just saw this article and it seems inevitable. Only Blizzard, Call of Duty, and Minecraft are safe, right?

Edit: To clarify, after this round of layoffs finish. Jesus, I wasn't aware more layoffs are coming for a week.

Priorities have changed significantly since 2019. The goal back then was maximally increase development capabilities and acquire studios in order to bring more games into Game Pass and make it the ultimate delivery service for games and drive people to the Xbox ecosystem.

6 years later they are slowly abandoning in-house hardware, Game Pass Day One launches are tiered, and as a result, most Xbox players have been trained that we no longer need to purchase first-party Xbox games.

This is going to last for years. Microsoft in general is cutting because they are bloated, and the global economy is in some form of recession, and because AI is a developing thing.

Xbox cuts have and will continue to come down the pipe because it is a fundamentally busted division and business Microsoft is conducting.

Many teams will get shut down. As Gamepass continues to churn and the mounting irrelevance and the revenue behind being a first party platform is eroded, it's going to be very hard to justify keeping around little leaguers like Double Fine and Compulsion whose games may be smaller and cheaper, but don't even compel existing Gamepass users to play, let alone attract new ones or drive sales on either a platform or software basis. The likes of Ninja Theory, Obsidian and InXile are even more pressing teams, because their projects are still expensive.

You said this:

Don't forget that they cancelled the new Blizzard IP almost immediately after buying ActiBlizz. Don't forget that a big part of these layoffs are actually from vital COD teams: Raven, High Moon, Sledgehammer. I always knew COD was going to take a hit without Kotick and team's oversight, and with Microsoft essentially removing half the COD player base as full price buyers by slapping the annuals on GP, but even I didn't think it would be this fast.

No one is safe.

This 'll likely become a feature.

Shareholders and execs want their isolated metrics met above all else; they're diminishing their capacity to meet them through productive means, when that becomes undeniably obvious each time around they'll cut some more to balance the books and so on and so forth.

Another W from the strategic masterminds at Microsoft!
In corpo suit terms, they're "streamlining" and "focusing" on what's profitable, which going forward would be COD, Candy Crush, Bethesda FO/TES and whatever else that makes cash

Was it? I could have sworn we learned the Xbox division has never ended in the black any of their generations.

360 was definitely the most popular because of early exclusives (these dried up in the second half of the generation and PS3 took the lead). But, the RROD fiasco really hurt them overall.

these are not "new" layoffs.

the layoffs are all part of the 9000 that were announced this week. not every division has been fully notified of the layoffs. yet.

This, not even every country in which MS operates. But I'm fairly sure there's still a third round of layoffs coming for the next FY across MS
