So from reading this thread, the project total is $5 billion and the for-profit arm of the church paid $1.5 billion. So does this mean that the tax-exempt church side has a $3.5 billion tax-exempt stake in this?

No. The other 3.5 came from other investors and to a very small extent, the city.

Pretty amazing complex. There already was a mall there though. From my understanding they bought some more of the land and did some huge renovations.
Owning all that land around Temple Square is a pretty important thing for the church though. I would think it's good business sense for sure and it's even smart for security reasons. I mean owning all the land surrounding the buildings that are the church home base.

I'm sure the Catholic church owns a very large amount of the land surrounding the Vatican. Wouldn't they?

Just another example of the Mormons throwing their money around trying to attract attention and make some profits. Just like their temples that are built in the most prominent places (usually on mountains or hills) that are lit up by spotlights 24/7.

Can someone Mormon explain this? What is Mormon underwear?

I'm not Mormon, but they're probably referring to their "sacred" undergarments. Basically, white undershirts/underwear. Some Mormons think the undergarments have magical properties (I've heard stories of Mormons in burning accidents that are burned all over their body, except where the garments covered, etc).

Mormons take way to much flak for shit IMO. So many drive by posters in this thread just trying to get their witty anti-mormon joke in.

Woah up there, a Mormon joke isn't necessarily ANTI-Mormon by default. It's just that they have relatively recently created beliefs that are almost as funny as Scientology so they're a soft target.

It's kind of funny how so many facebook friends are getting all excited about this. I just added my two cents by saying I would never step foot in this monstrous extravagance. I find the fact that my former religious institution bankrolled it to be atrocious.

I have decided I am fine with it. This thread went downhill fast though....guess I should have expected it.

May head down there Saturday to check it out myself now that its open. As much as I am conflicted (as a gay ex mormon) it does look badass overall.

I don't know how many of the joke posters live in areas with a high mormon density, but I find it's pretty easy to ignore them and let them be (maybe because I got that out of my system in High School).

Not sure about land surrounding the Vatican, but I bet if you liquidated all of the Vatican's assets they would have more money than the rest of of the Christian churches put together.

If by renovations you mean they tore it all down completely then sure.....lol.

Pretty sure nothing is left of what use to be there.

Are you telling me you won't get drunk and go in drag with me?

But would they have more money than the Mormon church?

I mean magical as in they magically protect the wearer from things like fire, bullets and knives.

Technically they are worn as a symbol of covenants made and as a "protection against the destroyer"

Obviously the protection is supposed to be taken more at a spiritual/meta-physical level. And also obviously some members take it to mean physical protection and there's no shortage of "mormon folklore" about garments as protection. I think it was the Marriott guy's disastrous 60 minutes interview where he talked about getting in a boating accident and being burned everywhere except for where his garments were. That certainly didn't help things.

Yes, I guess you can use that word. Magical like the Eucarist. Magical like the Koran. Magical like the wailing wall.

People joke about them being magical because some members of the LDS faith really believe that. See my post about people saying that people were basically burned alive and the flesh covered by the garments was intact. Obviously that's ridiculous, but I've lived in Utah most of my life, and I've heard stories like this from mormon kids and adults.

Other examples are people being mugged and stabbed and walking away with no harm, or them wearing them over areas of the body that are diseased or sick and healing.

It really makes me think about all the stories about Jesus walking on water and doing all of his "magical jesus stuff". If people believe the garment stories today, it's not hard to think that the truth about Jesus was often stretched quite far.

Didn't see this before I posted my last post. But yeah, living around mormons my whole life, it's surprising that both children and adults believe some of the stories they hear regarding the garments. At least there are some sane mormons who don't take everything so literally.

This picture:

Kind of reminds me of this picture
the complex around Mecca

Huge religious-affiliated complexes meant to look like an organic series of buildings despite being constructed concurrently.

That would make an awesome Supervillian lair.
